• Firearms XIII - Talk about all the guns

Honestly there were so many much more suitable handguns for the US to opt to. Using the M9 in Afghanistan, from what I've heard, was a nightmare. The unique aesthetic (the exposed barrel) apparently was the gun's curse, with sand and dirt and the like getting in it all the time and fucking it over. That's just what I've heard. I know little about pistols.
they barely issue sidearms at all in afghanistan though
The M9/92 is quite easy to disassemble and clean, and the parts are very sturdily made. I don't get why some people downright have a hatred of Glocks. I mean they are decent, affordable pistols. They go bang when you pull the trigger, and that is probably the most important aspect of a firearm. I'm personally not that big a fan of striker fired pistols, but that is probably more because of me being oriented purely towards sports shooting. Both a Glock 17 (The only Glock I have tried) and a Beretta 92 would be pistols I would trust my life with.
they barely issue sidearms at all in afghanistan though
They barely issue sidearms all together.
I have just the standard FNX-45 and I ended up breaking 3 belts wearing it. I finally got a good belt that could take the weight and the belt loops on my pants started snapping. So after buying new belts and stronger pants I can finally carry it with confidence.
Out of curiosity, why do you use a belt mounted holster? I have the mounting hardware to do it, but paddle holsters have always worked much better for me. [editline]5th April 2016[/editline]
Because it's outdated as fuck. That said, I think the M9 was a terrible replacement for it. It's not in the standard NATO calibre, it only has seven rounds in the magazine and it's not that reliable. Great gun up until about WW2 but was outdated as soon as the Browning HP entered the scene. Because some knobs still can't get over the fact the frame is plastic.
9 rounds really. As a primary weapon, it is not a good choice. As a backup though, the 1911 does pretty well. Generally it is pretty narrow, and doesn't tend to get caught on stuff. More than anything though, the gun is just easy to handle with one hand, which is pretty useful for a secondary. It makes sense, given that shooting one handed was the standard when the gun was designed. [editline]5th April 2016[/editline]
the only people I know of that don't like glocks either go full prissy bitch and complain about the grip being a little bit uncomfortable, have aesthetic issues with it, or think that because there's no manual safety that means there's no safety.
I dislike that people fail to recognize that the glock is a good pistol FOR THE PRICE POINT. I generally place more faith in Sig and FN, than I do glock.
it's a good pistol at any price point. it's ugly as sin and all but other than that it's dead reliable isn't picky about ammo is easy to field strip is easy to clean and is as accurate as any other combat pistol on the market.
it's a good pistol at any price point. it's ugly as sin and all but other than that it's dead reliable isn't picky about ammo is easy to field strip is easy to clean and is as accurate as any other combat pistol on the market.
If your gun has a problem with any of those and is something other than a collector's piece, then you have a serious problem. Glock does all of those things decently, but is out shined by other guns in basically every category. They aren't dead reliable. Many models of glock have some pretty annoying issues. Quality control with springs and extractors seems to be an issue. Once you get one going? Sure. They do pretty well, but reliability is expected in any modern handgun. Ammunition varies wildly. The 10mm glocks seems to have issues regularly. Field stripping is reasonable, but again, beat by a number of guns. Accuracy is decent, but again, other handguns do the same job better. Recoil is fucking terrible. Like jesus, what the fuck. A .40 should not have more felt recoil than a .45. I'm shocked every time I shoot a G22 at how bad it is. Plus you are just not going to beat any half way decent SA trigger pull with a safe action. Hell, I'm pretty sure my FNX wins in every one of those categories. I can't really attest to ammunition pickiness or reliability, as I'm only at about 1k rounds through the thing, but I've only had one malfunction. Had a round that was too large to fit in the chamber. It also wouldn't chamber in my 1911 or my USP, so I'm not holding that one against the gun.
I'm at probably 20,000 rounds on my glock 22 with only a couple failures all related to ammo or dirt. I haven't had this issue, I've heard it's mostly a gen 4 thing but none of my gen 4 carrying friends have had this issue. not sure where it comes from. I think the 10mm thing is just because the 10mm round itself varies wildly. I can field strip a glock in 10 seconds. that's more down to practice. it doesn't take any special tools or wild contortions to do and that's all it takes to be good. accuracy is above average at the price point recoil is totally manageable, my brother could handle it the first time he ever fired a handgun at age 14. I have a 2.5 pound trigger in mine which is pretty good. yeah a good sa is a better trigger but it's a combat pistol not a 10 meter. the FNX is hard to beat and if it was around when I bought my glock I'd probably have an fnx instead but even though as I said earlier I fangirl over FN you can't deny the glock is pretty close. considering the glock is about 20% cheaper I'd say it's damn good value for money.

I think we just came full circle.
why not just go all the way? mosin: $169 sbr stamp: $200 hacksaw: $10 file: $7 fine for shooting your neighbour's dog through three drywalls: $4000 permanent hearing damage after shooting indoors with your 5" 7,62x54r: priceless
I want one now damnit
a friend of mine is looking for a full size handgun around $600. I suggested a gen 4 g17, a 92FS, or an FNX-9. any other suggestions?
Ruger SR9 [editline]5th April 2016[/editline]
Is that what I have heard called "appendix carry" a.k.a "shoot your nuts off" carry? Anyway, my order from Estonia arrived yesterday, so today I can already go and pick it up. The website said 5-30 days for estimated delivery, but I put in my order juts this Thursday!
No. "Mexican Carry" is just stuffing the gun in your pants without a holster. Appendix Carry is called Appendix Carry.
I dislike Glocks as a matter of preference when it comes to construction, ergonomics and aesthetics. The gun doesn't really tick any of my boxes and for that matter throws brass in your face. Many people swear by them and that's their right -- personally they aren't my thing. I'd rather have one than a sharp stick or a heavy rock, though. I'm not snobby enough to die instead of use a Glock :v:
Ditch the Glock and join the rest of us who are down with the CZickness.
My dad has a CZ75. The Witness Hunter I want to pick up some day is a CZ at its core, as well.
I have a CZ Wingshooter Elite O/U shotgun does that count as being afflicted with the CZickness? :v: Also I had a Glock 22, got rid of it after the first few range trips. Fucking thing made blisters on my palm when I shot it. Tore my dominant hand up really bad.
Yeah I can't stand the trigger pull but I don't like most strikers in general.
I wonder what human wieldable gun has the highest recoil of them all? I've seen a couple of videos of .700 Nitro Express-caliber gun users get knocked on the ground from the sheer force of the recoil... unless the gun itself goes flying off the wielder's hands like a rocket. It also sounds a bit like a crack of thunder.
Out of curiosity, why do you use a belt mounted holster? I have the mounting hardware to do it, but paddle holsters have always worked much better for me.
At the time I got mine not a lot of big manufacturers had any options for it. One of my co-workers happens to make holsters as a hobby, so I had him make a leather one for me. For most of my pistols I use a paddle, a lot more comfortable and easy to use.
What did you order?
A bunch of stuff. Some Uvex protection glasses (tinted yellow for extra tacticool) and ear plugs. A cheap 9mm cleaning kit and some extra brushes. A pair of shooting gloves, a belt pistol holster for competition shooting and a pistol bag, all from from Ghost. I wanted to have my own stuff for when I get to go to competitions, instead of borrowing almost everything from the Shooting Union. The holster is not intended for carrying, so it is a simple push fit holster for a relatively quick draw. It is intended to go with my Double Alpha Academy racer mag pouches and belt, that I purchased used from some local shooters. The pistol bag is mostly so that I don't have all my magazines lying around in a pile when I have to go shoot. The pocket for the pistol seems nice, but the pockets for the magazines don't seem particularly big. I'm convinced that it must fit a double stack 9mm, as the bag was posed with a dummy Glock in the display pictures. I'll go and assemble the rig in about half an hour, so I'll post some pictures when I get done!
Where did you order these things from?
As you can see on the stickers, I ordered from www.ipscstore.eu. They are actually based in Tallinn, Estonia.
not even sure if it does. I want it mostly because it's an extended barrel and slide length with a matching length dust cover, it has a really sweet SAO trigger, obviously has adjustable sights (the stock CZ 75 Orange not having them pisses me the fuck off. just seriously??) and a thumb stop. i shoot with my thumbs forward up along the frame so that helps a bit. shooting mostly competitions I want a long model for the pointability, easier recoil handling, longer sight line etc + it's one really sweet looking gun i won't use this for open class in dynamic shooting, rather for regular competitions (range/"felt") in the Norwegian handgun association competitions. for open class it's probably going to be a czechmate when that time comes my .45acp gun will probably be an FNX-45T with a norwegian a-tec suppressor i guess. could pick up a RMR to use when I shoot at the range on my own time my first four handguns will be a Hämmerli 215 in .22LR, a CZ 75 TS Orange in 9x19, and probably a PPK in 7,65/.32 ACP and a S&W in .38 Special. Getting the latter first makes it possible to get both a .38 and .357 without any hassle. If you buy a .357 first you could have trouble getting a dedicated .38 later. I dislike glocks because their stock trigger pulls are just awful. sure you can do something about it but at that point I'd rather get a stock cz75 and put adjustable sights on it.. those kits are 99 out of 100 times just sucky plastic garbage which you put a glock or sig into to make it tactic00l. in most jurisdictions they're not even legal without special permits so whatever
I was so close to buying a Hämmerli 215 as my first pistol. I actually talked to an old guy that was selling one used, but I think he perhaps changed his mind. I still like them a lot, but I went with something in 9mm, as my Shooting Union have plenty of .22lr pistol that I can borrow. I finished my rig under guidance of a slightly more experienced IPSC shooter:
so I take it my habit of going mexican carry is no good for an fnx-45
Good way to wind up with scratched finish and freaked-out passerby. And, possibly, nice young men in dark blue uniforms asking you pointed questions.
Good way to wind up with scratched finish and freaked-out passerby. And, possibly, nice young men in dark blue uniforms asking you pointed questions.
no officer I'm just a little tan
isn't it kinda dumb not to get both a .22lr and 9x19 at first in scandinavia? dunno about danish rules, but in norway, a new handgun shooter can buy up to 4 handguns before he needs more activity to justify further purchases usually people go with a .22lr, 9x19, .45 and .38/.357 at first
I'm not sure if I understand. My Union has close to 25 .22 pistols that I can chose from, and only 3 worn, beat up, knock off of 9mm hand guns that I can chose from.
Isn't it better to own your own you can get used to, know how many rounds went through it, adjust the sights and trigger to your liking, know it's always available?
I entirely agree, my budget is just a bit limited right now, with me being a student and all, so that was the entire reason why I didn't purchase both. The 215 is a fantastic gun, it's just a bit on the expensive side. I also like the Walther GSP a lot, and many GSP's were significantly cheaper last time I checked. I'm also starting to look at old military rifles. I'm seriously considering getting a Mosin Nagant of some variant a some point, mostly for the history and to experience shooting it. If I want to shoot accurately, I can just borrow a Saur 200 STR. I also saw a 6.5mm Mauser k98 for sale... Shooting is quickly becoming an expensive hobby for me.
I'll trade you my Mossberg 930 for it. :downs:
Not sure what the punch line is but I'd trade it for a Mossberg 930 in a heart beat.
Not sure what the punch line is but I'd trade it for a Mossberg 930 in a heart beat.
The fact I am willing to trade a perfectly functioning gun for on that is having consistent issues. But I'm game for it. Granted I am a 700 or so miles away.
Just a reminder that the guns will be around long after us even if they aren't maintained...
