• Boiling Shellfish, Crabs, Lobsters and other sea creatures alive: should it be banned?

If they are not cooked seconds after they are killed, they will become toxic and therefore they will be a huge waste of resources and life. When they are thrown in, they die almost instantly due to their brain's location, and it has been proven that even if they did not die almost instantly, they cannot feel pain at all. As has been stated previously as well, they are cooled down and basically knocked out before this happens, and if that happens they die even faster (About 0.2 seconds) due to the system shock that this causes.
uh no plants are considered animals, plants are in the kingdom plantae and dropping them into boiling water is totally humane, the ~most humane~ way is to stab between their eyes, though. There's far worse things happening to animals than being dropped into boiling water, it should be the least of your concern.
hmm i didn't know all plants were i thought it had something to do with...something.
There is a reason for doing so. It has something to do with its digestive enzymes starting to decompose the organs when it's dead, ruining the meat. You avoid this by boiling it alive.
Aha, I knew there was a reason for it.

Why would you want to care if a crustacean gets boiled or not? Either way it will end up dead. Now I don't want to start a philosophical debate but in the end they are just that, a crustacean.

dont you think that if it were twice the size of you it wouldn't try to eat you instead
Anyone who can't bare the thought of killing another living thing in order to eat it (God forbid we even think of the things we humans eat ALIVE), is a pussy and that's that. I know a few of those people in real life. They're called vegans and vegetarians.
Or they're just compassionate, not necessarily pussies
Ohhh yes forgive me for not sugar coating things.
Ohhh yes forgive me for not sugar coating things.
What's wrong with being compassionate?
What's wrong with being compassionate?
you can push it
no because dungeness crab and lobster are delicious with butter.
Yeah I forgot that adrenalin has a taste. You're joking, right?
Adrenalin makes your heart rate increase and muscles contract. Makes the meat taste worse.

Is this thread really about some people boiling lobsters alive? 1: They are crustaceans, boiling a lobster is about as humane as stepping on a bug, and im sure you've done that more than once in your life 2: It's part of being an herbivore, you die and get eaten by carnivores and omnivores, basically your sole purpose in life is to get to adult size, fuck another thing of your species, and then get eaten.
Do we have a scientific means of determining whether a species can feel pain or not? I mean, it's easy to relate to other mammals but are there similar neural responses we can detect in crustaceans? I fear it's too easy for us to fall into the trap of saying "they are too dumb to feel pain" simply because they aren't warm and fluffy.

"Just becuase you cant tell that tree is in pain doesn't mean it isn't!"
I wasn't trying to argue a point, I was posing a legitimate question. I love eating meat, I don't have an issue with boiling lobsters or slaughtering livestock. I just want to know if we have any scientific means of determining whether a species can feel pain similar to how mammals do. If there is anything I'm arguing for, it would be intellectual honesty. If you want to defend boiling lobsters than at least stick to the facts and the logic; don't resort to unqualified judgments like "lobsters are dumb".

Dropping it in hot water, should it be painful, would be quick anyway. Easiest way to do it. Shit, if you want you could just put it in a bath of clove oil before you boil it. Would probably affect the taste but that sucker would be as out as Michael Jackson. [editline]16th October 2011[/editline] Ever have to put down a fish, clove oil and vodka is the way to go.
You can say "It's just x, it's going to end up dead either way" for any animal.
You can, but who says it has to abide by some Abstract rule?
Just like to point out that crustaceans are like a cousin to insects and bare many similarities...also if you don't boil it alive you'll get sick when you eat it...plenty of things out there have to be cooked just right to be edible...Oh and one for the vegan, it has been proven that plants do respond to injuries though just not by screaming and such. If you want to live without killing something then you're asking for the impossible. Germs and such and even tiny part of yourself die all the time just for the normal functions of human life to continue. tl;dr version stuff dies...no matter what so enjoy tasty lobster...

It's still commendable that they don't want to kill more animals than they do inadvertently.
I didn't know that they were killed instantly, i had heard that they'd scream while being boiled, but apparently that was just hot air escaping.
Those sick bastards! :downs:
Go ahead, throw 'em into the pot, just don't make me eat it and everything'll be copacetic.

Also by not eating meat the world actually consumes less grain as well.
