Are you looking for a specific area of IT or just anything?
I assume you have a portfolio? I've never heard someone getting hired for software work purely on qualifications. In fact, qualifications are mostly jack these days.
RE this and what @alexojm said, when I did volunteering for my late sister's state school for a couple of months (it was a disabled school, so somewhat different) it's so incredibly stressful having to deal with state budgets. I already knew the guy who worked in IT there so it was easy for me to get work but fuck working there for long. The SMT was up their own ass and gave you no money for shit whilst complaining about why you don't have enough iPads in stock and why you can't allocate more of the termly budget towards what they want...
School's seem great at first but as I understand it your holiday is basically when the kids have theirs (so no choosing your own), money is always tight and you're expected to handle anything that uses electricity (maybe not so much in bigger schools but smaller ones it's probs more likely). Also it seems like a dos anyway because there isn't always a whole lot to do when you're given nothing to work with in the first place, so your biggest challenge is the kids.
Keep in mind that (taken from the guy who I worked with) once you do educational IT for a few years+ it's MUCH harder to break out of it as companies work much differently compared to schools so you're instantly less appealing. He has 6 years or so in the education sector and unless you're going into companies who dedicate themselves to schools (which is mostly filled with young dudes anyway) most other places will find you less appealing. Thus you're now set in the education sector.
Sorry if it seems like I'm shitting on the guys who actually work in schools - it's just a word of caution from my limited experience and peers. A couple years though to kick off your IT career would be beneficial to show that you can work and aren't a tit. I've heard from absolutely everyone though - It's more about who you know than what you know. That's how I've gotten all my work in life (including my current job).
We couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding.
This may sound silly, but I've had a really stressful day today. My local hospital recently changed their car park to ANPR. It took me at least 40 minutes to find a space, and usually I would go elsewhere but it literally feels like you're trapped from the moment it takes your number plate. They give you 10 minutes grace but I was stuck in a traffic jam driving around the car park for at least 20. You gotta pay on the way out of the hospital by putting in your number plate, but I was stuck behind this elderly gentleman that couldn't work out the machine. When I tried help him he just got very angry at me and security had to come over. I then had someone almost go into the side of me at speed on the way home, which really shook me up as they missed going into the driver's side by inches.
Spent around 4 hours at the hospital today and I'm exhausted/didn't need the stress.
Yeah you're right with most of that. As a technology technician I'm expected to fix and make anything from a dwindling supply of consumables with no fucking money available to buy anything. - I should start my own shoe repair business due to the amount of kid's shoes I've glued back together again. I remember this one IT Technician who played WoW all day as he had nothing to do that day - some days are busy and rewarding and some aren't but that's what keeps the job interesting.
rule #1 of working with children is having witnesses or alternatively some sort of recording device on your person
I'm quoting this because it's related to something that happened about a year ago, and it's a prime example of how conniving students can be. My former friend had always had a bit of a thing for one of her teachers, which was...weird but whatever. It escalated when she spread the rumour amongst her close friends that she and this teacher were in a sexual relationship. Obviously, someone reported it and the girl ultimately got expelled, but there was a period of time when the teacher had to take time off teaching and people were genuinely worried that the teacher was guilty. The cherry on top of the cake was that this ex-friend spent a good portion of the time between the report and her eventual expulsion saying that the person that reported her had 'betrayed' her and 'made it up', for whatever strange convoluted reasons she could make up on the spot. Students can be fucking bizarre, man.
Isn't the recording part like, super dodgy? You're technically not doing anything wrong but unless there were fixed camera set up around the school then couldn't having one on your person be considered as your footage rather than the school's?
idk how these things work, but the social stigma at the very least would indicate so.
Generally hospital car parking is fucking dreadful. The one near me doesn't even have enough parking for the staff, let alone any patients and then you are charged a small fortune for the privilege.
I'd take anything but really, IT tech support.
If it runs on PC, you support it. Yeah look at anything tech support related beyond PC's (think mobile). Also I'm going to shill for my own company here but check out EE's website for jobs. We've got quite a few going I think!
The private companies who parking is forked off to over 90% of the time are fucking scummy. "Why yes, we will manage your car parks for you, so your trust can save money" = "ok, let's charge the blue badge holders, general public and staff alike - £5 an hour!"
My avatar broke and it's time for a change anyway, but I'm stuck thinking of a decent snazzy one. I'm so un-creative it hurts.
meant to be flying out to Paris tomorrow and there's airport strikes in France.
Flybe are fucking useless when it comes to any form of help, had 2 flights cancelled now and the rest are fully booked.
I already work for EE though lad, in sales though.
Awks... Move to BT? They're absorbing EE anyway lol
Made 6 calls to Flybe in the end and finally got me a new flight. They were adamant that their flight wasn't cancelled even though Air France were the ones flying the plane and told me themselves it was cancelled.
shoutout to france for taking a day of holiday off me tho, cheers lads
Does anyone else get that slight fear inside them when you send off job application forms? Just completed one now and I'm happy I completed it (as I know I would have regretted it later) but I don't think I'll sleep tonight wondering if I've made any mistakes.
after so many you just dont give a fuck anymore tbh
Yorkshire tea are bringing out tea bags that apparently taste like tea and biscuits.
Mcvities can bring out the biscuits that taste like biscuits and tea. Quadruple the taste.
