why are you always so pessimistic?
Because my life is going nowhere and I know I'm the reason why. I'm struggling to break out of the rut I've created for myself by constantly keeping my mood low. With low expectations I don't need to make an effort, or so my brain thinks.
christian nairn ( hodor ) is doing a DJ set 1 metre in front of me and all I'm doing is browsing FP
i have photographic proof of this
I can't really answer which is the best bank for you (I'm with RBS and they've been utter bastards at times but pretty good on others) but to open a bank account you need a proof of address (bank statement or bill) and a proof of ID (full driver's license or passport).
Do you know if banks in general would accept a rental contract? Like the NIN, it's something I plan to organise the day that I get there and wouldn't have any bills yet. [editline]12th September 2017[/editline]
I've been with Nationwide and Lloyds for years. Lloyds are cunts, opened the account when I was 14, when I was 21, I went 5p under £0 on Christmas day. They ended up trying to shaft me with fees, so I went to the local branch, the manager said not to worry, he'll sort it out. Two weeks later, I get a letter CCJ, which utterly tanked my credit score and fucked me over big time. Had to fight for about 6 months to get Lloyds to stop being utter bastards. Estate Agents and Credit Agencies wouldn't touch me. Eventually they removed the CCJ against me, closed my account. Never going with those fucks again. Nationwide, on the other hand, have been fucking amazing to me. They've waived numerous fees when I've had a direct debit mess up, instead of charging the £20. They've helped me get back loads of money (£3200 that was nicked, £320 recently that a dodgy merchant refused to give back). I'd recommend them in a heartbeat. Their mobile app is easy to use, and being able to login with a fingerprint is nifty. They've also got a referral offer where we both get £100, me for referring you, and you for signing up. Just sayin.
Just the info I was looking for man, sounds like a good deal with the referral thing as well. Have that with with my bank here in Australia and its pretty damn awesome. I'll send you a private message regarding it.

So it might not be fast enough for you since you want to open a bank ASAP. Either way, with or without the referral, you should defo go with Nationwide. They've always been great.

How long is that offer with the refferal going for?
Alright guys, who's a good bank to go with? Going to need that sorted relatively quickly once I get over there. Don't really want anything with monthly fees. Ideally would like to have a card account, then two accounts, one for bills, one for saving. Also, do I need a national insurance number before I get a bank account?
Jumping in late on this, I've been with Natwest since forever and they've been great to me personally. But there is the slight lingering issue that they're part of the RBS group and they ain't exactly the most stable of all the bank groups. Personally out of the banks in the UK, the ones I'd recommend are Natwest (don't touch any of the other RBS banks), Nationwide and Barclays. Avoid Lloyds and TSB, there's a really good reason why they're no longer Lloyds TSB and it's not because they were making a load of money or the whole "its for competition" reason they keep pulling out of their arse. Another one I've heard good things about is HSBC but it really depends where you are, their branches are really spread out compared to other banks and the same with Halifax, which is another one which I've actually been considering opening an account with as their savings accounts are kinda tasty.

I wanted to open an account, so I had to book an appointment to meet a person to take me upstairs to meet another person who took me across to another person in a room, who it turns out didn't really want to open an account for me, they just wanted to pressure me into getting insurance on a home I didn't have (???). I left. [editline]12th September 2017[/editline] Thirded fourthed, fifthed and sixthed for nationwide though

Fast forward 2 months later and I'm still getting letters from them regarding my account. Went for more meetings and eventually managed to get it closed. How inept can you be?
Over the weekend I moved up to Sheffield with my partner. First time living in the north proper. Anything I should know about the north or its people? It's also bloody cold.
I've just switched from NatWest to Nationwide. The thing which pushed me over the edge to switch was turning up at NatWest at 16:07 in the afternoon to cash a cheque in and it was closed. Open 10:00 - 16:00. Total load of wank. Went to Nationwide opposite and immediately opened an account - staff were much more friendly and the account benefits which come with the FlexPlus account I signed up for make it well worth the £13 a month.

Do you get upset when supermarkets ask you to leave because they shut half an hour ago and you're still "Just picking up one last thing."

Yes, I should have checked their own website. Bite me. The main issue is a bank which is only open for 6 hours a day, during the time when the majority of people are at work and cannot get there. It's crap. Nationwide are open from 09:00 - 17:00 which seems pretty standard to me. No, I don't get upset when supermarkets ask me to leave because they're generally open until a reasonable time or 24 hours and I don't get asked to leave ever.
You seem a lot less unreasonable with all the context.
You don't have to pay extra for rice with your curry
YO what, are you having me on mate
Atleast with Natwest you can take emergency money out which is really useful, unlike shite old TSB which you need to go to the their branch for which is a pain when they are 9 - 5 and I'm at work...

And also how fucking annoyingly windy it always seems to be.

Depression sucks, so instead I made an analogy to poop to try and lighten the topic. I have suffered with depression for a fair few years, but my mentality is opposite to yours. Fuck lying down and letting it turn me cynical. I fight that shit with bad jokes and not very humourous humour. [editline]12th September 2017[/editline] I'm making a 5 hour drive today down South, legit can't wait to listen to music, drink coffee and experience the thrill of having van drivers get 3cm from my bumper going 85mph.

I saw Christian Nairn at my uni once. Was a really weird night, he played a remix of the Game of Thrones soundtrack...
Dunno why I got charged then, I explicitly remember the manager laughing it off and saying it was just the computer system being especially aggressive, and that he was gonna sort it out since it was just 5p.
Yeah weird. Maybe different account types, or just recent changes in policy since both my accounts (Lloyds & HSBC) have that £10 buffer. Think we've had a guy from JLS and another pop band fall into the former category.
