Strain; no. That's like having a bag of rice with no marking on it and wanting to know what brand it is from just looking at it. Now you might be able to tell if it's good quality or not from looking at it, but until you taste it and try it, you'll never know how good it is.
On this same note, I can tell you I have cheerios, even if it's walmart brand, and you might not know the difference because you've never had REAL cheerios before. Like some people will tell you they have Sour D, but unless you've had it before, I could tell you it's anything and you'd probably take my word for it.
I find that at least 80% of the time, the strain name that a dealer will give you is malarkey. A good rule of thumb to go by is to smell it, see it, smoke it. If it smells through a baggy, looks powdered white with crystals or has some funky color to it (blue, purple, yellow, ect.), and kicks your ass in less than a bowl, it's probably legit. But I wouldn't buy bud by name, use your own judgement. And always look at the bud before you agree to buy it. Some people will try to scam you, don't let them. And a scale never hurt either... 3.0 and 3.5 are very different.

I'm pretty sure dispensaries post THC content of certain batches, but you can't tell what it will be because of the strain
