Just listened through the whole of The Wall. Mind blown.
Yeah, I love "The Wall"....just the whole theatrics of it all. I have to say, if I was at that concert in 1980, I would probably shit myself as soon as they revealed that creepy ass schoolmaster marionette for the first time. Although, the wife is probably the most demented looking of all the stage props.
2 more weeks 'til I see Roger Waters. :D
2 more weeks 'til I see Roger Waters. :D
3 more months before I see him C:
Upon listening to the Demos of The Wall closer it appears that:
* Pink was attempting or planning to commit suicide(The Doctor. The lyric "Come on/Put away the shotgun.") And that The Doctor himself was actually a charlatan who (figureatively speaking) just threw pills at any problem.
* Pink was mentally a complete wreck by the near end of the album(Is There Anybody Out There 2/3 are incredibly chilling and are much more strained and emotionally fractured than the final version.)
* The Teacher was a far less prominent figure, But his vocal appearances were much more numerous, As the helicopter whirl was originally just a swirling cacophany of the Teacher screaming for Pink to stand still.
* "The knock on the door/Cannot stem the sensation/Of seemingly-endless freefall!" IMO this shows that ITAOT 2/3 take place within a few minutes of The Doctor chronologically, But in Pink's mind the gap is much larger.
* Another Brick Part 3 is far less heavy, And instead sounds like Pink is teetering on a literal edge, Although it's obvious this was intended to be mentally.
* What Shall We Do Now(Which in this, is actually a REPRISE of Empty Spaces, as James Guthrie will insist.) repeats the same verse about three-four times in the same 40 or so seconds, Showing that Pink, at least from my understanding, is going completely fucking buggo.
I might make a longer, song-by-song analysis of the Demos tomorrow morning, This was done while i was half asleep.
are you guys more interested in the concept than the music. just wondering. :-)
Do you have a problem with them focusing on the concept
Also, listening to the Doctor is an absolute pleasure because it just goes to show that Roger is not an infallible lyric writer. the lyrics are SHIT. But the solo's are great, the end solo of Cnumb should have kept that person yelling "goodbye" and stuff, thats awesome
"I am a physician/ who can handle your condition/ like a magician/if you show me where it hurts"
"Hello/is there anybody in there/is anybody BLEEDING"
But then, the demo of Show Goes On are very interesting and really kinda good
In fact it works better than the final cut of it, it just works better
I actually like the original cut of Hey You inbetween The Doctor and Who's Sorry Now(The show must go on) Because the lyrics are different, i view it as Pink, inbetween his old persona and his burgeoning new one, Trying to comfort and cling to his old personality while slowly losing his soul. I think that thematically it fits far more.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for pop rock like that, but I've never dug the concept. Not fully anyway.
The movie however, is a different story.
How can you even listen to Pink Floyd without enjoying the concept?!

I don't focus on the concept, it just jumps out at me.

That's just it. With Dark Side or Animals, the concept connects with me. The Wall just doesn't mean much metaphorically to me.
Roger himself talks a lot of twaddle too, interviews where he tries to make it more metaphorical than it is.

I don't think he speaks twaddle to confuse people, I think he does it as a game, Like Valve teasing us about ep3.
But The Wall connects with me because a few years ago i was really isolated from my family, and rarely spoke to them in person.
I've listened to it a dozen times. It's in my most listened pile, and I've never gone above a "enjoying it for what it is". Great drive.
Maybe to me, the concept meanders into something about someone's life rather than society.

I understand. I don't think Wall was the right choice to deal with that issue, but at least it means something for you.
It's not what i used to deal with my issue, I broke down my barriers out of my own willing, I just find it easier to click with The Wall because of it.

Although i really love Sheep, from what i can gather, It's about them revolting against, and taking control of their society.
I love Animals but it's such a bloody long album(it seems longer than The Wall or WYWH to me overall) that i only listen to it sparingly
Animals is like Half the length bro. :v:
But I do get you, it's VERY long-winded. But that's why.
Yeah. It's an amazing album, And i really love its songs but, I find it hard to get through in a single sitting.
WYWH seems actually shorter than Animals and even shorter than The Wall to me, despite it having far longer instrumentals.
First time I heard Animals was on a bus journey. This was a few years back, I'd listened to Dark Side, but didn't quite get much out of it.
Animals though, seemed to hit me directly with it's progressive style. I've pretty much memorized the guitar sections. Such a groovable album.

some of Mason's best drumming too imo.
IMO What Shall We Do Now is another stellar example of Mason's drum work. I just love that rolling drumbeat.
And that "Dutu-dutu" bit from the beginning of In The Flesh? is another great one.

oh and Shine on You Crazy Diamond
I'm going to try to give "The Division Bell" another shot today. For some reason, I've never really been able to get into the music as much as previous albums. The first half is pretty good, but then it's like it just trails off into a lull, and then returns with High Hopes. I think right now I'm just accustomed to the early sound, and I'm subconsciously comparing it to those albums. It took me awhile to get into "A Momentary Lapse of Reason"(that 80's industrial drum), but I enjoy it quite a bit now.
Put on headphones. Feel the Division of the Bell.
[editline]13th January 2012[/editline]
also momentary lapse is just standard 80s pop rock. Not as good as Genesis' Pop years.

Yes, especially as of late with his new tour, trying to broaden The Wall's themes to a political scale. I don't really much care for this, since the personal aspect of The Wall really clicks with me, but the show was great anyways.
Oh by the way

Entire o2 show.

I really really love Bring The Boys Back Home in Roger's current tour, It's very anvil-dropping yes but i REALLY love the quote he uses onscreen, And it overall turns the song from mildly lacklustre compared to the rest of the album to goddamn pure awesome
It's gonna be so awesome when I go see him later this month.
So I only started listening to pink floyd a few months ago and went the standard route, DSOTM - The Wall followed by animals, meddle and wish you where here. For some reason Animals never grew on me and I kept listening to the other stuff, just gave it another listen and I can not for the life of me understand why I dismissed it before.
Just gave a listen to one of the discs of DSotM Immersion tonight, specifically this

You were young. Don't be hard on yourself.
"Animals" is my second favorite Floyd album..lots of great guitar work and percussion on there! I still get chills when the dogs start barking after "...dragged down by stone...stone...stone".
I think I'll have to add "Saucerful of Secrets" to my regular Pink Floyd lineup now. With the exception of the title track (which is just too noisy in my opinion), the album is pretty solid. Remember a Day and Jugband Blues rank in my top 5 early Floyd songs.
Saucerful isn't that noisy. It's quite insane and weird, which is good.

Let There Be Light is also great
My personal favorite off the album is Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun
