• Pushing Shopping Carts: Why it Sucks so much

I work at a store called market basket in Massachusetts. Carts is the funnest thing to do. You just get to go out in the fresh air and have fun. Its fun to get carriages. I do, however, agree that some assholes really ruin it. It takes me about 30 seconds to pass the roadway with a 13 cart row and people constantly cut me off Assholes
Most trolleys in the UK, and as far as I know, Europe, have these security locks where you need to put in a pound or a euro to release it from the next trolley in line (connected via chains). To get your pound/euro back you need to find another trolley and put its chain into the other side of the thing. And no, the chains attached aren't long enough to reach its own lock. Found a pretty picture for you
And if the person forgets to lock the carts back together, then the pusher gets a tip
I remember hearing a poem about pushing carts... ...found it, here it is.
I had to push carts for a while too, only in Arizona during the summer with nothing but a cart leash, suck it up its your job :).
Do Americans call them trolleys atall? I like that word. Trolley.
At the supermarkets here we have something called a rope which you tie to one end of the train and to the handle of the one you push I've never tried it but I'd imagine that could help a little? But most are linked with the security system Morbo mentioned above [editline]28th June 2011[/editline]
And if the person forgets to lock the carts back together, then the pusher gets a tip
That's part of what it's for, it encourages you to take it back to it's proper place
And if the person forgets to lock the carts back together, then the pusher gets a tip
The carts where I work take 1 and 2 dollar (Australian dollar) coins. In an 8 hour shift on a quiet day, i can make over 10 dollars from these. [editline]28th June 2011[/editline]
Do Americans call them trolleys atall? I like that word. Trolley.
Australia = Trolley.

It's just a bungee cord though, can't see how helpful it'd be.
That's not really a big deal dude. You have to push carts because your manager told you too. Not because of lack of funding and because they want to be an asshole. They pay you to work for them. You get a shitty pay to do the 'shitty work' and even make excuses not to do the work? It's definitely way better than no paycheck. And besides, if you did the work well with no problems, you could work your way up to a better pay and job.. Believe me, at one point all my friends worked at a grocery store, I had to listen to all their stories. It's not even that bad I bet you'd hate to have my job, which I'm a mattress delivery man carrying heavy ass beds into these people's houses. I also unload the Serta truck when it comes weekly. Not to mention I live in Florida and its 95 degrees out everyday and 80% humidity. I get paid 10$/hour + tips, because I know what the fuck I'm doing when handling beds (others get like 8$/hour, and im way younger), I've been doing it for so long. A real delivery driver should get paid $15/hour. I don't complain one bit, I don't care what hurts, I just do the job.
not to sound like an asshole, but the people who complain about carts are normally the bad employees who take like an hour to do it I can understand why it would suck with an injury though
I work at a grocerystore too, during the summer, and after school. I love getting the carts. Listening to music, just chilling... :c00lbert: (Fucking sucks during the winter tho, in a heavy blizzard, -30°C outside, hands freezing, face melting, carts getting stuck in snow, can't see shit...) Every store in Finland has those chains mentioned above:

They make the job a million times easier. Our carts are pretty lightweight too, i usually grab 20 at a time. :v:
Fuck I wish I could listen to music at my trolley job. I have to do customer service and help lifting stuff (we get a lot of old customers) too so I always have to listen out for the PA announcements and stuff
Some old man who is the "cart boy" at my local mall has some kind of a pushing machine the size of a trolley that can push 30-40 at a time and it follows the guy around, all he needs to do is attach the carts to it and guide it.
I have the same job since I was 16, I've been sent out in 110 degree heat (not allowed to wear shorts outside either rofl) and below zero temperatures to get carts. A couple funny things that happened: When I was like 17 I was pushing some carts around some guys car who was parked illegally in the store fire lane. So I tried to go behind the guys car when for some reason, the idiot throws the car into reverse and backs straight into the carts I'm pushing. I just stand there in disbelief of the stupidity I just witnessed and there is like a 10 second pause and he just took off and hid somewhere in the parking lot. Another time a few months ago I was going around some old man parked in a handicapped spot when he starts backing up not paying attention to see I'm walking right behind him. He backs up to within inches of me and I'm yelling at him to "stop! stop! stop!!". He keeps backing up and I slap the back window of his car several times and yell at him to "fucking pay attention" because he almost ran me over. He just drives away looking at me with a derp face: Some of these dipshits just remind you why old people should probably get re-tested for their drivers license. Recently I accidently kicked some cup of melted ice cream that some slob left on the ground and it splattered all over someones porche. But I did a 360 and got out of there : P
Do you work at Dominion?
Technically yes, but it got taken over by Metro Ontario. It's very poorly managed; bosses try to get workers to do shit they've never been trained to do to save money. As soon as I find a better job I'm quitting, and reporting tons of shit to the Labour board.
If the supermarket has the coin-lock things and you really want to piss off the trolley-boys: 1. Obtain two coins. 2. Unlock two trolleys. 3. Take them outside 4. Put them back-to-back 5. Lift one up enough to put the handle on top of the other. 6. Lock the trolleys together 7. Take the coins 8. Walk away nonchalantly.
pushing a cart and drifting in the shopping mall is fun. pushing a crap load of them is not.
Do Americans call them trolleys atall? I like that word. Trolley.
Here we call them Mart Cart Wheelie Dealies
:) I always shove my cart back myself.
I work in a grocery store. I believe I'm going to be out pushing carts in 90 degree weather in approximately 6 hours.
used to work in a hardware store we didn't have a designated area you'd be surprised how retarded people are
30 C is 86 F
102 degrees in Florida :fyadride::frogc00l::fyadride:
What, i don't get it, in germany we have these _everywhere_: The chain un/locks when you insert either 1 or 2 euro [depends on the shopping cart] I've never seen someone leaving the shopping cart on the parking area
I live in Canada, of course I mean Celsius.
You got nothing on Texas. Try working at a chain store doing the same exact thing day in and day out, where the temperatures during the summer reach triple digit temperatures.
i used to push carts and in retrospect it was really good for me because it helped me get into really good shape :kiddo:
I push carts as well 100% manual labor in 100+ degree weather, 30 to 45 minutes at a time with little help.
Whenever you have a lot of carts/a heavy cart, it's a LOT easier to pull rather than push. Admittedly, that still sounds like a fucked up situation, i know how long shopping cart lines can get... no easy job with a sprained ankle.

I haven't been there in ages.
My parents bought my computer for my birth day.
