• Pushing Shopping Carts: Why it Sucks so much

I work as a cart guy at Tops, I hate it but I need the money. Its the worst when people just shove them into the middle of the street so you have to stop what your doing run over there and put it in the Designated area. Oh we also have three different types of carts which makes it harder.
I think people over here like to steal them, I dunno about the rest of Europe but in the UK most large stores now have systems in place to prevent the trolleys from being able to leave the place they belong. I dunno quite how it works but if you push them beyond a certain point the wheels lock.

Some trolleys actually lock their wheels if you try to push them out of the car park, only seen it once though in Australia.
Had no idea Shopping Cart Technology was so advanced in other countries. :v: Most places over here, Shopping Cars are just metal cages with wheels, nothing else. Nothing is preventing you from leaving them wherever or stealing them except your own manners and honesty.
I don't get it, NOWHERE in my country has adopted this scheme. Everyone does it their fucking selves.
Well we do have to pay £1 which you can only get when you take the cart back yourself. Lazy ass american soccer moms need to loose some weight and take their own fucking carts back. Then again our country is full of fucking chavs who like to steal them / dickheads who think it's hilarious to push them onto the fucking main road...
It sucks because the cart will not push itself.
Yeah, get over it. My older brother has to push carts around in hot ass weather (we live in Florida) you could be doing much worst jobs.
That seems like such overkill when the coin thing works fine
It doesn't work that well for someone determined to steal one (which for some reason a lot of people in the UK are).
I too am a courtesy clerk at a local grocery store, and it kind of sucked for the first couple of weeks because it's just awkward handling that many buggies when you're starting out. After a while though, it's not that bad. We don't have chains where I work so I only bring in 6 or 7 at a time....luckily my arms are long enough to grip them sideways so I don't have to push them from behind and worry about slamming into things. All in all though, I'd much rather be outside in the sun than inside dealing with the "herd" or cleaning the shitters. Last year I got to watch a fireworks show going off in the distance on the 4th of July while I was bringing in the carts.
You look like a dumbass
Edit: Apparently my job is in the dark ages, seeing as I don't have any special hardware to help with this. It's probably because I work in a smaller chain.
No, chap, even the bigger chains have this shitty problem too. I work for publix and im a grocery clerk but because the asshats that work in the customer and bagging departments are too lazy to walk customers out to their cars and take the carts back inside... the grocery department is called out... and when i mean grocery department i mean just me... because my peers don't give a shit about their job. granted, i dont have to suffer 30 degree weather. i am out there in 100+ degree weather so its basicly the same thing just on the other extreme. i fell your pain )= also, my store doesnt even have designated shopping cart areas in the lot... which makes retrieving carts even more frustrating
I have the same job essentially it hardly bothers me. Keeps you busy and you get to avoid annoying customers (yeah that's my peeve when working.) Also, 30 degrees? that's t-shirt weather where I am :smug:
I remember the Wal-Mart I worked at. They had a little machine that clipped onto the back of a chain of carts and acted as a power assist so you could move the carts back into the store without really having to push that hard.
thank you for this post. i have to work 4 to 8 hours a day just bringing carts back inside for minimum wage. it is the worst thing ever. and if people werent such fucking assholes it wouldnt be so bad
I worked carts at Ikea for a year, it was a really hectic and stressful job and it made me into a cynical asshole, the amount of laziness that I saw from a ton of people was disgusting. Literally the only upsides were that I was always outside and active, and I got to work with some cool people. Though I might add that for every cool person I worked with there was a lazy asshole, and the fact that I was outside all the time lost it's charm when temperatures dipped below -15 degrees.
