[QUOTE=felix the cat;39577034]It's already impossible to live on a minimum wage job. That would solve nothing[/QUOTE]
$150 a week for cutting the grass around highways or something is totally fair, totally survivable, and would improve the quality of life for everyone.
No. You cannot survive on $150/week.
[editline]13th February 2013[/editline]
Minimum wage is fine for high school kids still living at home and whatnot, but it is not by any means a livable wage for an adult living on their own, let alone with a family to support.
[QUOTE=felix the cat;39577996]No. You cannot survive on $150/week.[/QUOTE]
You can if that's untaxed. Cook your own meals, don't spend 50,000 on your car, and don't buy a mansion and it's perfectly survivable.
[editline]13th February 2013[/editline]
If you start a family without being financially stable then you're an idiot and need to have your kids taken from you.
For $150/week you couldn't even afford the ghettoest apartment in Toronto. Rent is ~$600 a month, guess how much you make in a month at $150/week?
In Ontario, minimum is $10.25, assuming you work full-time at minimum you earn $410/week, which is $1640/month and $19680/year. That's barely livable, that'll get you rent, food, hydro, maybe tv and Internet, and a monthly bus pass.
How depraved is the US where a minimum wage job working 40 hours a week only pays $3.75/hour? That's so low it should be criminal, he'll it is criminal here. I make $150 working only weekends.
You simply can not live on $7800/year in the United States and still try to make a better life for yourself. i.e. going to college
But back on topic

[QUOTE=Birdman101;39576055]Surplus ammo is fine as long as you clean the barrel after, right?[/QUOTE]
Yeah surplus is safe to shoot, just make sure the bullets and casings aren't cracked or corroded or anything. Cleaning is the issue when you fire corrosive surplus. The salts in the primer is whats corrosive, and they will pit your barrel and wear away at parts if you don't properly treat it. The easiest way to treat it is to mix a 9/10 water 1/10 ammonia (or windex WITH AMMONIA) and dip a patch in it, run it down the barrel twice, and let it sit for 30 seconds. After that hit it with some dry cloths and then oil it. The Ammonia counters the corrosive salts from the primers. Some use detergent or just warm water, but I prefer to be thorough and actually counter the corrosives.

I'm not suggesting making that a full time job either, work at McDonalds or something on top of that and you're living quite comfortably.
The highest end apartments here cost 700 a month, you can easily find something for $400 here.
Btw federal minimum just means states can't set it lower. The lowest minimum wage is 5.75, average is close to 8.00
One of the romanian 40 round mags I bought won't load all the way. The follower gets caught about half way through the mag (after loading about 20 rounds). I've taken it apart and cleaned out most of the cosmoline but it still gets jammed. Would I damage any of the parts if I stuck them in boiling water for a few minutes?
If it's a plastic follower I'd leave it out, otherwise you're all good. Romanian 40 rounders are all steel aren't they?
oh yeah when i had my rpk, the 40 rounders were awful mags. same mags as you have
one mag would stop loading after 7 rounds, i had to like hit it with a hammer

yeah all steel, going to boil some water now then. thanks

yeah they advertised it as "slightly dented or scratched" and it's COVERED in dents and scratches, the other 2 are fine though. Can't really beat 15$ 40 round mags, plus one is parkerized, so thats cool.

Having everything socialized (also it isn't) isn't why Toronto is so expensive to live in, that has to do with land values. You could probably afford a small house in Muskoka on minimum, but you'll be lucky to find a job in the first place and commute times would be terrible, not to mention the nearest anything would be about an hour's drive anywhere. Land where there's nothing is cheap, land where there's everything is expensive. The cheapest apartment I've seen in Toronto was $450/month, and I don't think that included utilities. Minimum wage is not enough to support a family, regardless of where you are, it's barely enough to support yourself.
Not to mention shit in general costs anywhere from 10%-30% more here than the US, and traditionally that's been due to exchange rates, but now that our dollars are on par, with ours occasionally outperforming yours, that added cost is totally arbitrary.
It's interesting that you bring up this conversation because Obama was just talking about having the Federal minimum wage pushed up to $9.00 an hour.
Of course that probably doesn't include servers, who haven't had a minimum wage increase for 25 years.
Another reason why I love Nevada. Minimum wage is $8.25, and we don't have the worst cost of living. It'd still be near impossible to do anything above surviving on minimum.
I don't think it's unreasonable to want to expect minimum wage to be able to provide for only yourself while still being able to improve. How are we to expect unskilled workers to improve themselves (IE college or even cert classes) if they're stretched thin just living?
Sucks that people will be irresponsible and have kids when they don't make enough for themselves, but it happens.
Cheapest rent I've seen here is around $450 a month, including all utilities. Not bad, but it'd be hard to afford anything outside of groceries and rent on minimum. I make $11.35 per hour, still in high school, so I'm doing pretty good for myself I'd like to think.
OT, going shooting in about an hour. I'm only taking my 10/22, because I don't have the money to feed my mosin until tomorrow. I've never sighted in a scope, how hard is it? I don't really understand anything about it outside of twisting the two knobs to change stuff.
This may be a bit of an odd question, but someone brought up a scope for an AK earlier, and I'm curious to know where you guys would rank Simmons scopes? I have a 4x12 fixed on my .22lr that's awesome for the gun it's on. Just curious what you guys think about the brand in general for other weapons.

Crappy Denver suburb here, studio apartments start at $750/mo
imo AK's should only have POSP scopes on them

So adjust regionally for cost of living?

IMO they're just above Tasco in terms of quality, and Tasco is at the bottom of the list.
And the same committee from yesterday just passed another bill that would require citizens pay for the secondary background checks we have to do.
Also known as a De Facto ban. No different from an ammo [del]tax[/del] fine or the $200 NFA [del]tax[/del] fine.
so why is Eley the only round available?
is it the price? the quality? is it safe for Semi autos?

Just finished cleaning my .22 after we went shooting. The scope was sighted in very well already, had no problems taking out glass bottles at around 25 yards.
I raided my dad's workshop for gun related stuff to put in my desk's "gun drawer" since he sold his guns and doesn't shoot anymore.
Got a hold of 2 bottles of Rem Oil, some cleaning rods and brushes, about 40 .410 shells, 10 12ga shells, and some cleaning patches.
Of course, my boresnakes suit me fine for now. Seems like dropping some oil down the bore and snaking it clean does the job very nicely.
I went back to buy that .22LR box, and of course there was 2 people ahead of me wanting to buy them. Thank god for the 1 box per person rule otherwise i would have been SOL.
Oh man, there was a guy in front of me with his tinfoil hat on waaay too tight. Some of the things he was talking about: "OBUMA IS CREATING AMMO SHORTAGE SO CIVVIES WONT HAVE ENOUGH AMMO FOR THE CIVIL WAR, HE ALSO MADE CONCENTRATION CAMPS ALL OVER THE US FOR WHEN HE TAKES ALL OF OUR GUNS CHECK GOOGLE ITS TRUE!" I shit you not that's what he said, he even held up the line for like 15 minutes flapping his gums.
Fucker was even out of state searching all over for all the .22lr he could find.
faggot hoarders man, stop. the shit will calm down in march I just hate waiting that long!
Ok, so romanian steel 40 round AK mag, wasn't feeding right so I took it apart and stuck all the parts in boiling water for about ~10 minutes. Got almost all the cosmoline out, gave it a very light coating of remoil, and reassembled it. This time it got stuck at about ~30 rounds in instead of 40. Basically is what happens is the follower gets stuck in the mag and won't move up anymore. if I give it a good smack on the top it'll start pushing up again. Took it apart again and took a wire brush to the sides of the follower to round them off some. Same issue, Any suggestions?
More than likely, it's the follower itself. Probably flapping around in there and getting hung up at odd angles.
yeah definitely the follower
you mentioned that it was dented, maybe try pounding the dents out
I figured it was probably the follower, I'll probably order a new one if I can't work it out. And the dents aren't severe or deep enough, or even in the right place, for it to cause the follower to get caught.
