However sperm whales can dive 3,000 meters. Not the bottom, but still really deep. Plus we've hardly discovered any percentage of the ocean to be certain whats down there. Each deep dive they discover a new species. Who knows what the ocean has in it. Remember when the giant squid was just something fishermen brought up dead from time to time? Or just something that washed up? Not anymore. There is also a bigger squid out there, the Colossal squid. The blue whale is the biggest known thing on earth. There are entire mountains and volcanoes underwater. Some which are bigger than Everest. As we speak another Hawaiian island is being formed while the others are slowly pushed west. It's an alien world, right on our own planet. :cthulhu:
Wow 18+ meters that's ridiculous.
Wow 18+ meters that's ridiculous.
If only they concentrated on what's in our own world first rather than space which is just a dream right now. Did anybody read that story ages ago about the fish they tagged and it went down into 1000+ degrees Celsius heat and came back perfectly fine?
Wow 18+ meters that's ridiculous.
The biggest thing to ever roam the earth in its entire existence. Little is known about it. However we know a grown man could swim down its arteries, and a baby could climb down its blow hole. It has a heart the size of a car and a fluke the size of a small airplanes wingspan. it's 30 meters long, and 200 tons. Humboldt squid can change color which some believe if a method of advanced communication. In a documentary, a group of scientists put a camera on one. As it dove it became reunited with more and more if it squid brotheren, all of which seemed curious about their friends new device. They flashed red, got seemingly aggravated by the squid. As more and more arrived, all flashing red, they all began to tear him apart because they knew he had a foreign object on him. Their suckers are barbed, and they are known to be one of the most intelligent animals on earth. Deep ocean fish have evolved to be red in color so they are invisible to others because red light does not penetrate that deep. Because of this, eyes of creatures down there are far different than eyes of creatures up here. The ocean is a fascinating thing. It's things like these that helped me make up my mind to become a marine biologist.
Sounds like a movie, I'd like to see anything on the story if you can find it, sounds interesting.
I've tried googling it to no avail so far but I'll let you know if I find anything. And another one I remember: A man suspected of sorcery, or some dark art shit was taken to the Tower of London during the 17th Century, and placed in a cell with a bunch of other criminals, during the winter, there was a food shortage, and many of the prisoners died of starvation, anyway these criminals supposedly got together and ate the newcomer (the suspected sorcerer) to feed themselves. Cases like this weren't unheard of in a place like the Tower, and apparently the guards didn't do anything, now a few days later, supposedly, a guard hears screams coming from the cell containing the cannibals who ate the sorcerer, he investigates and catches the sight of some great hound for barely a second before it rounded a corner and disappeared, upon looking into the cell, all the inmates were torn apart, some parts of their anatomy missing like it had been eaten up. Anyway no guard present at the time ever recalled seeing a hound there, at least not one of that size. Like with the Dutch vessel story, it's entirely likely that I misquoted or misread parts of it. [editline]07:00PM[/editline]
The ocean is a fascinating thing. It's things like these that helped me make up my mind to become a marine biologist.
The ocean scares the piss out of me for precisely that same reason. I remember seeing an octopus in Turkey when I was barely 9 years old, falling in and feeling the fucker grab onto my leg, mum said she never heard me scream so loud in my life. Fucking hate octopi, nasty tentacled fuckers.
Is Santa real?
I heard one a while ago. Apparantly, during the 1970s, a Dutch ship managed to recieve an SOS from another ship, they managed to find its coordinates and set off for it, upon finding the ship, they boarded it to find out what was wrong and found every one of the crew dead, not one of them looked like they had been physically harmed but each one of them had a look of terror on their faces, the ship's captain and his dog were found in a similar state (well, as far as dogs go for terror). I read about that a while ago so I may have the timeline wrong, or even the nationality of the ship that found the dead sea men.
Isn't that the story of the Flying Dutchman? Exept I think it sank off the Cape of Good Hope.
Isn't that the story of the Flying Dutchman? Exept I think it sank off the Cape of Good Hope.
Fairly certain it's just the nationality of the vessel that was Dutch, though it might have been seeing as how I don't know about the legend of the Dutchman.
Anyways, back to the Bloop and the Slow Down... doesn't it make you wonder what is down there? I mean, we know more about space then we know about the bottom of our own ocean's... l..
Cthulhu and R'lyeh [editline]08:46PM[/editline] Not long now!
Fairly certain it's just the nationality of the vessel that was Dutch, though it might have been seeing as how I don't know about the legend of the Dutchman.
Flying Dutchman was a Dutch vessel too. Hmm, let me dig up some Wiki quotes. It was a Dutch Man-o-War ship that sank off the coast of Cape of Good Hope. Captain believed to be in cahoots with the devil. The story has it's other versions though. [editline]03:18PM[/editline]
Cthulhu and R'lyeh [editline]08:46PM[/editline] Not long now!
Every depth you see of the ocean on Google Earth was detected via satellite. The satellites look at an area of the ocean, and find what the features on the ocean floor are like, because every large object on the floor effects the ocean surface just enough to be detected. Very little of the actual ocean floor has been searched in detail. Not to many people know about the Monterey Canyon. It's a 11,800ft deep just inside Monterey Bay, California. It's one of the few spots in the ocean that have been scanned over in detail. The Grand Canyon is only 6000 feet deep. Cotahuasi Canyon, the biggest canyon on the surface, is 3354 meters deep. Grand Canyon=1,737m Cotahuasi= 3,354m Monterey Bay = 3,600m And that's just one ocean feature we happened to stumble on, mere feet away from civilization.
Number stations scare the shit out of me. Because they EXIST. Lost Cosmonauts A supposed married couple, Ludmila Tokov and Nikolay or Anatoly Tokov reputedly disappeared. TASS later reported that an unmanned satellite roughly the size of a London bus had been launched, but had disintegrated during re-entry. Regardless of the existence of either Nikolay/Anatoly Tokov, the Torre Bert listening station in northern Italy purportedly picked up a transmission of a woman's voice, sounding confused and frightened as her craft began to break up upon reentry. Presumably the voice was Ludmila's, though no one knows how or why this name has become attached to the voice on the tape. The interpretation of the tape can be found at the website. There were reports of a couple launched on February 17, 1961 aboard a Lunik spacecraft orbiting the earth, reporting "Everything is satisfactory, we are orbiting the earth." at regular intervals. On February 24, 1961, there were some garbled verbal transmissions about something the couple could see outside their ship, that they urgently had to communicate to Earth. What happened is unclear, but communication was lost. Around the same time the listening station at Torre Bert reportedly picked up an SOS signal from a craft in space. As the signal got weaker, it was assumed whatever craft it was disappeared into deep space. Alexey Belokonev is reportedly one of three (two men and a woman) cosmonauts aboard a November, 1962 flight. The Torre Bert tower in Italy allegedly picked up a frantic set of messages relayed by the three occupants. 'Conditions growing worse why don't you answer? ... we are going slower... the world will never know about us . . '
My grandfather claims to have seen a Russian space craft disintegrate over the Bay of Biscay in the early sixties. He was told by a Russian he was with that there was a cosmonaut on the craft. Whether these stories are related I don't know...
theres some wierd shit in montery bay/canyon aswell. transparent fish, bioluminescent fish, etc. and all the crap form the surface comes down and looks almost like show.
Definitely one of the better threads. I've read everything :v:

Also they found a giant undersea wall in a part of ocean ages ago. i bet you peel off the grime and you'll find horrifying inscriptions of lovecraftian monsters
Hey guys, since we're returning back on the subject of the deep sea's, here's a pretty nifty picture:
Part of that is wrong. Blue Whales only feed at 330 feet. Judging by their size, they could probably dive a lot deeper, yet no one knows. Not to much is known about the Blue Whale. [editline]05:33PM[/editline]
And this is related to R'Lyeh how?
Just saying that no one knows what we got down there. For all we know Ctuthulu could be more than myth.

Area S4 Area S4 is part of the famous 'Area 51' United States military base located in Nevada. S4 or 'section 4' is thought to be an experimental aircraft testing facility consisting of a series of hangars. It was made famous when alleged ex-Area 51 employee Bob Lazar claimed to have worked there and that it was housing a number of extraterrestrial craft.
more! lol, these are very interesting.
more! lol, these are very interesting.
I've been looking around and haven't found many very "interesting" ones, maybe i'm looking in the wrong place.
I don't believe anybody has posted about the South Atlantic Flash yet. Pretty much, it was an unexplained flash picked up south of Africa in 1979 that has the characteristic double-flash of a nuclear explosion. It is believed to be a joint South African-Israeli nuclear test. Of course as far as we know it could have been some crazy conspiracy related thing that ended up in a nuke detonating on a cargo ship. I can't think of any really scary or interesting ones, I think this and the other thread have them covered.
