Some sort of spear/sword combo, tried baking normals off a high poly.

What do you guys make of my business card design? I know it's not your area but thought i'd ask... ignore the nasty compression.
Wanted to keep it pretty simple, but is it too boring?
If you cant be bothered to leave specific feedback, agrees/disagrees will suffice :)

It looks a bit noisy for a business card. Overall it's nice, but I just think the background is just going to be lost in print.
i agree print it out and see how the design transfers.
I think it's dimensions are wrong for a business card.
The spacing seems off, consider where things should be aligned.
Rather than making a thread in Fast Threads, I think I'll ask here because I'd get the best answer. I've been wanting to get into 3d modeling but don't know where to start. Anyone care to help me out?

Can we get a sticky answering this question?
I began with Blender. Despite spending a significant amount of time in Maya, Blender is still my preference.
However, at this time it's not widely used in the industry, so unless you're freelancing or just doing it as a hobby you may want to gain a working knowledge in 3DS Max or Maya as well as Blender.
From what I understand, Maya is used more often for animation/film, and 3DS Max is used more often for video game modelling/animation. That doesn't mean one is inherently better than the other at that given task though.

Thank you. I'll look into both Blender and 3DS Max, and look up some good tutorials.

You need to fix the weird lines, but wow that's great.
Thats 3ds max's rendering :/
edit: it was just a screengrab from the viewport with realistic on
Hey man hey, lowpoly is coming along kinda nice I guess

So Mirrors Edge looks pretty, with it's incredibly well done pre-baked global illumination and all. And I was bored so I decided to remake a screenshot from the game, specifically this screenshot:

Simple scene really, here's the result:

The door is incomplete and the tree is completely different, but I won't be doing any more with this.
Also the painting is different, but in the same style and by the same artist so eh.
im going to write a poem about how bad maya is thats just how bad it is
I think seahorses are a bad influence on mankind because we can't communicate with them.

I don't understand why you came in this thread just to post that? Trolling or..?
He's saying Maya is bad because he just started using it recently and obviously hasn't learned how to use it properly yet... hence my seahorse analogy :v:
uh no it legitimately suffers in modeling and really should not be used at all for the course i'm taking. it's genuinely a good animation package but the modeling is just piss poor. it lacks the same quality that you get from nondestructive, nonlinear modeling with max modifiers. history just doesn't cut it. many of the poly modeling tools found in max are just absent in maya and the workarounds are pointlessly slow. the maya UI is loads slower to model in and I know the keyboard shortcuts and menus well enough to where it should be as fast as max. the only thing it has going for it in terms of modeling is layers and the outliner.
basically i definitely know maya well enough to say that it's objectively a worse program to model in if you care about efficiency

im a regular in this thread are you joking
I may as well put this in here too, I did actually make it for a render I'm going to be using for a college project

Anyone see anything unsightly on it? It'd be good to know before I unwrap it
If there's some kind of problem with realism, then it shouldn't be such a problem, the project is a call-a-dooty parody. :v:
And I've since fixed some of the blatant smoothing errors and added more edge loops at the back.
I've also since made the foregrip smaller and made the eotech larger

That's a funny-looking gun, Freeman.
well it seems like it's in some weird realm between low and high poly and your polygon distribution is kinda strange. you've got tiny bevels and such but many large forms are faceted.

Alright cool, I'll give it a once over on the rough edges
I had a feeling polygon distribution would be brought up, I think really when I was making it, I had a "Under 6k-ish polygons" limit in mind, so that If I did end up under there I could use it in a game later, but as you can see I was hardly consistent about it. It has about 4.5K on it at the moment.
Lesson learned about having a goal in mind I suppose
mind posting wires? that would make it a lot easier to tell what could be changed

Hopefully this at least gives an idea, 3dsmax decided it wasn't going to cooperate fully
I've ended up not removing the seams from the mirrored parts yet, so I'm not off to a good start
Yeah. Think of it like this. If you have a cylinder half the size of another cylinder, you should also half the detail. right now you have tiny cylinders that have a lot more detail than those large holes. You've also got those tiny bevels on the rail and sight but very little detail in the largest forms like the handle.

Going to rework this a bit - the side with the horse's face is too high poly comparatively, and I wanna add more detail to the sections that meet the books and shelf. Oh yeah, currently sitting at 570 tris.
It's my first time at car modeling in 3dsmax! :D
It's an old ford fiesta.
Does anyone knows how to make the edges sharper?

I still got some weird shapes to fix.
