Those of you who sculpt high poly models and then bake the detail down to a normal map for a low poly model, what kind of hardware is your computer packing? and how high detail/how many polys are your sculpts normally? My computer starts to struggle with anything over 400000 faces, using Blender's Multiresolution modifier to sculpt.
Some models can range up to several billion, but Z-brush works in voxels so it doesn't have many issues, try baking it in several parts too. If you're coming to a struggle at 400,000 you'll probably want to look into that, what are your specs? Also nty Digipen for $116,000 I could do about 10 degree courses in the UK for that :v:

1-2m polies, 4gb ram, i5, 660ti
1-10 million polygons, 16GB ram, i7 860 and 6870 HD graphics card. All you really need is decent amount of ram and a good cpu. Gpu doesn't really matter as long as it's not some integrated shit and can handle at least shader model 3.0.
I'd avoid Radeon, personally. Their lack of CUDA technology is really a bitch sometimes, especially with the CYCLES engine. Of course if your rendering engine uses the CPU it doesn't matter anyways, but GPU rendering on CYCLES is so much faster than with the CPU.
Well I've got a 5770 HD graphics card, 4gb of ram and an AMD Phenom x4 955 3.20ghz processor. I put it together on a budget about 3 years ago. It isn't amazing by any standard but I thought it was odd that it was struggling at 400k faces.
I've got GeForce 9600 and an amd 4X 2.66. Using sculptures my model got up to about 2m before it started gettin laggy. I think. Could have been a wee bit more.
AMD FX-8150, 16 GB ram, and 2X AMD Radeon HD 6970 in crossfire. Even though my CPU has eight cores and runs at 3.6 GHz, an equal Intel i7-2600 will perform similar, even though the Intel processor only got 4 cores. And, well.. The AMD processor is $130 cheaper then the Intel processor in Norway.
Started working on this model again. No V-ray currently because I'm lazy.
Did you ever explain what that is? :v:
Does anyone have any idea why my textures (exported in any format from Photoshop) appear incredibly dark in 3dsMax? Here's an example, the above is taken from the .psd and below is how 3dsMax views it when opening the file.
Adjust your gamma in Max
you're right. i dont honestly know why you would want to draw quads, i just recall reading about a couple engines that are exceptions.
Those engines actually just triangulate the meshes before rendering, as you can't actually render quads (the same way 3ds max has invisible triangles on quad based meshes.)

Ive come to day 20 in my 100 days project! http://lazore3d.blogspot.no/?view=classic

Jesus man, what did you do?
Jesus man, what did you do?
Bike wreck, fractured one finger all the way through, broke it clean off the base of the bone. Had to have surgery and I finally just 20 minutes ago got my cast off. Not a good break to have as a right handed art student at the beginning of the semester but it could have been worse. Doctor says I did a good thing by resetting my finger at the scene which wasn't too comfortable. Actually, scratch all of that. I broke my finger because I was modeling so extreme using far too many hotkeys.
we will all get carpel tunnel anyways
That has to be the best cast-doodle I have ever seen.. Didn't even know you'd had the accident, glad to hear everything's okay now :] [editline]9th October 2012[/editline] The first thing written on my cast was "gutted" & "this way up"
Well, obviously it's a train.
Oh good, I thought it was a woman's toy.
we will all get carpel tunnel anyways
I'm using Colemak, no carpal tunnel in these wrists.

depending on the height you either have a normal sized dick or a really long and stringy dick [editline]9th October 2012[/editline] trust me guise im an expert on dicks
