yeah idk blender's workflow you're speaking croatian braille to me
My workflow in Blender right this moment is like this: *click* [Blender not responding] [Screen blinking between black screen and Blender] [Blender responding] *keyboard shortcut* [Blender not responding] [Blender responding briefly] [Blender not responding] [Screen still blinking wildly] [Windows: Do you want me to close this program?] *clicking 'no' again* [Blender responding] [Blender not responding] ...
lol blender I mean I can see the attraction to it but the UI and workflow is just so broken.

Just got realflow. Gonna have some fun with this. :3
lol blender
lol pointless arguments about preferences
Okay, I can't get it to work. This is the first time I've ever baked normal maps so I might be doing something obviously wrong. But here's the 3dsmax file + raw uncombined normals. http://www.2shared.com/file/jkD7H65N/shoes.html
i was out tonight but i'll try to figure it out in the next few minutes [editline]15th October 2012[/editline]
lol pointless arguments about preferences
lol blender
I love threads like these! Awesome work. Here's a couple 1 hour sculpts I did a couple weeks ago: [img_thumb]http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc388/Justin71240/676A4B21-B0C9-4F9B-8106-8156245DAB88.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc388/Justin71240/B6DC2F1F-6AA9-41DD-81A9-DDEDC1389C9E.jpg[/img_thumb] Just finished this one a minute ago: [img_thumb]http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc388/Justin71240/hoursculpt.png[/img_thumb] Wanted to do a 1 hour paint on this one too, but I screwed up the UVs and some artifacts started showing up. Ended up leaving it half finished. Ah well. I didn't draw that by the way, it was just somethin' I found on google image search.
I found out about Sculpris though. Is that worth trying out or are they different enough that any skills I pick up won't be useful?
I personally like Mudbox better than Sculptris. You can get a free educational version on their website if you wanna give it a try. But yeah, man, the sculpting part is all pretty much the same. If signing up on Autodesk is too much of a hassle then go for it.

http://www.2shared.com/file/jkD7H65N/shoes.html
i reproduced your setup as well as testing it with xoliul. i tried a bunch of different stuff but there's no seams for me in those problem bits. there are bad seams on one part of the model though: on the front and back of the rubber where you split the uvs. you need to rebake that part. also, the alpha is very jaggedy and unclean. maybe you could render it at a very high res and scale down to make nice and smooth edges?
Can you take a screenshot of how it looks for you?
Does this look oversmoothed correctly?
Here's how it should look when the normal map is working properly. There's some slight issues but otherwise I find it pretty good.
[T]http://i45.tinypic.com/2w7jn20.jpg[/T] A gavel, in your choice of 852, 4246 or 28404 poly flavours! Still needs a proper texture (just using a stock C4D wood shader) but otherwise it's done. Really happy with how this turned out. [SUB][SUB]**Sounding block, podium and authority to sentence people to death not included**[/SUB][/SUB]
Seems like you could get a lot more out of the low-poly version with a normal map.
Why the fuck is there even an option to subdivide something to an impossible level?
Why the fuck is there even an option to subdivide something to an impossible level?
um this is 3d modeling why wouldn't you want options like that? there's instances where high subdivision is p useful. i dont even understand this as a question, why would modeling app devs place artificial restrictions on what people can do with subdivision?
Why the fuck is there even an option to subdivide something to an impossible level?
That's like saying why you're allowed to set higher graphics settings in a game than you can run.

Any program can render cool shit if you know how to work it what differs is the workflow and control scheme
No, I mean it gives a minimum measurement between subdivisions of zero, which is impossible, thus crashing my shit.
Zero iterations of subdivision should be exactly the same as your model before you even used subdivision in the first place.
Zero iterations of subdivision should be exactly the same as your model before you even used subdivision in the first place.
Not iterations. Ugh, I'm trying to express what I mean, but I can't figure out how. LDSJFSL Like this, if it was zero, wouldn't that be impossible? I'm assuming it means the size of the polygon generated by the subdivision.
Not iterations. Ugh, I'm trying to express what I mean, but I can't figure out how. LDSJFSL
Are you saying it subdivides it to such an extent that there is no space inbetween your vertices and it crashes? Because if so, the function exists; that doesn't mean you have to nor should you use it.
Are you saying it subdivides it to such an extent that there is no space inbetween your vertices and it crashes? Because if so, the function exists; that doesn't mean you have to nor should you use it.
Yes. I didn't mean to though, I accidentally pulled my mouse too far, and it immediately crashed. I just think there should be something that stops it from going to zero.
Any program can render cool shit if you know how to work it what differs is the workflow and control scheme
As they say, it's the artist, not the tool.

The subdivision modifier doesn't smooth things. It just subdivides and nothing else so in most cases it's not very useful.
As they say, it's the artist, not the tool.
I like Blender's workflow/control scheme but to each their own, we shouldn't be bickering over the program, but the end product.
