The interface is horrible though :v:
I find that most often the cage does need to be manually adjusted. I used to think that my xNormal bakes with the default settings were alright but after moving to baking in Max I don't really know what I was thinking.
Working with that many polies is going to be hard if not impossible in Max though.
Although XNormal's interface ugly, I used it for my first model and found it was pretty easy to use, and worked wonderfully.
Uh, crap pageking. Here is something that I'm working on:
You can do that in xnormal.
And you don't usually even need it.
Nah you always want a cage.
I wish 4chan.org/3 was more popular :/
Sorry I'm posting this again, I don't know if no one was up for it or if I was just buried under other content.
I'm looking for someone who wouldn't mind throwing together a nice 3d "intro" for my YouTube channel :) it's centered around gaming. If you want I can go into more detail in PMs but it would involve making the video portion and any related motion graphics/atmospheric stuff but I can do all of the sound stuff (and would prefer to unless you're exceptionally talented at it :p).
Thanks! :)

I'm wet for it
I think I may be done with the sculpting on the shoe. If you see anything that you think might be better changed, or don't see something that you think should be there, let me know.

So I know nothing about rendering. Anyone have any good setups/tutorials to make a good looking gray clay-ish style render for showing off objects? (I use Maya, but it might not matter too much.)

It's a telescope.
Looks more like a microscope.

Nope it's definitely a telescope.

Someone made a thread about their model not looking as smooth as game models. He was new and his model lacked smoothing groups. They told him to subdivide the mesh 11 - 12 times before putting it in game :tinfoil:
yeah that sounds like 4chan quality advice

No feet for you.
Not really sure where i'm going with this.

First go at serious modelling and not just ripping models from games

In Maya, how can I make a tube or a wire that has complex geometry rather than a simple extruded circle?
I forgot to mention ages ago when I went to Train2Game Gamejam they had 3Ds Max 2013 and it was absolutely terrible! Crashed constantly it was god damn annoying and they had good computers too.

I mention this now because 3Ds max just crashed.

If you mean like the one in your image you posted then CV/EP curves.

Perhaps I've misunderstood, but I mean complex tubular shapes. To create a plane, cylindrical tube I can just extrude a circle, but obviously the results are very basic. How can I get a cylindrical mesh to bend along a curve?
Is there any program that can automatically move and rotate UV chunks around to take up as much space as possible, almost like a puzzle solver?

I'm having a hard time understanding but if I've read it right just add subdivision heights in the attribute editor.
if this isn't the answer, wat

If you're looking for hardcore mode Maya has an auto UV function.
But that's just suicide.
How do you guys suggest I make something look like it's made of brushed metal without it looking like shit?

Depends on the size of your model and what it's for, I'd go with a procedural material for a pretty big model so that no tiling is noticeable, otherwise just use a texture with mostly small scratches going in the same general direction and a very subtle normal map for said scratches.
