I say if you want to learn modeling, then Max is where you should go. But you can do just about everything in both programs. I like Maya for making scenes becuase it's way easier to navigate the viewport in it, but I got a plugin for Max that allows me to use the Alt+Mouse configuration. I just been using Maya recently because I need to use it for the class, but It's growing on me.
Anyway, here's tire for part of my final project.

What will the entire thing be?
Also work on the tread

Yea the treads kinda shitty, I think I need to add some variety to it.
I'm hoping it turns into a BMX/Dirtbike Penny-Farthing.

How's this?

Looks good, though if you're going for a bmx the axle on that wheel is way to small.

I redid it again and came up with a much better tread design I think. This one makes more sense for something that's for off road.

The axle is small because it's for a bike like this.
I just want to say 3ds Max is satan incarnate and nobody should use it for anything
Some people evidently disagree, though
That's racist!

Bikes like that doesnt have threads on the wheels.

I'm making a Dirtbike version of one. Like a joke type thing.

Looking forward seeing the result! :D
Quite interesting concept you have going ;)
Eeeehhrr... Page king... I have nothing to contribute right now.
Sooo, here's what I got when I googled for "Page King 3D"..

Cool, looking forward too it :D
Started working on this scene. I don't think that ill add too much more too it.
This image is just a screen capture from maya using viewport 2.0.

Guys, I'm going to need a certain program for my 3D modelling needs, now, i've never done it before, because I haven't needed to as of yet, but in Uni I will, and I don't know which program is best for beginning, learning etc etc. Anyone help me out? I mean, I can get autodesks products free for 3 years or something like that because i'm a student, I can get cinema 4d free for 18 months cause i'm a student.. I just don't know which is best for me.
It's work for modelling in-game characters, models, entities etc, worlds and levels. That sorta thing.
A direct quote from the course page is: "you will be following industry standard design processes using professional software like Autodesk's 3Ds Max and Adobe's Photoshop CS4."
get what you will be using in your coursework, so get max.
Yeah, I thought that - but, I e-mailed them and they said it's flexible what students use for their projects.

Use 3ds Max, especially if you're planning to go pro. It's also the best choice if you plan on using UDK (Unreal Engine 3) since almost all tutorials are configured for either Max or Maya (mostly Max).
So... 3ds Max.. It's not too hard to learn? I'd like to get a head start before Uni, would be nice.
Not really, sure it will take some time to learn all the basic stuff but it is by no means 'hard'. Don't get overwhelmed by the endless tabs and buttons, most of the stuff you barely even use. After some time you will start to develop patterns and become more efficient. I don't even know what I'm doing half the time, I'm just endlessly repeating patterns in real-time. It's kinda like how you learn to type without watching the keyboard.
I suggest you just play around with some basic Max stuff for several months. Don't get all crazy and start projects or model anything serious (oh man how many people try to model guns as their first models..). I remember I played around with cubes and spheres a lot and editted them like crazy to make derpy stuff. Again, as you model and edit stuff you start to memorize patterns and before you know it you can actually start on a real model and ask yourself 'how to model this shape, that curve, that bend' etc.
Pardon my question, but what is the difference between this thread to show off your 3d models and the Model/Skin pimpage thread in the modelling section?

This thread has more polygons in it.

This, and we got bigger e-dicks
More christmas stuff!
Cause im thinking of putting together all the christmas stuff i make until the 24th into a bigger render

This thread is orientated around 3D art, not solely models; things like environments, fancy renders, shaders: all that jazz. The other thread is orientated around custom models and textures. This thread is basically the same, but broader.
Hey guys, my friend is having problems in Max where she'll put a skylight in her scene and have the viewport in realistic mode but her model shows as pure black. I've never experienced the problem myself so I was hoping one of you guys might know the solution.
I can get screenshots if needed.
Use Shaded
Use Shaded
She wants to bake her Ambient Occlusion though.
Isn't that done with the renderer?
