I cannot figure out how to UVW Map complex models in Max. I'm just starting out, and it's hard.

There's a fair amount of smoothing errors.

Do you know how to flatten a map?
Also i'm not done with that yet, don't worry I seem them.

Yeah, it's just fucking annoying to do. I like 3ds more overall, but Maya's mapping was way better.

seems pretty neat. i have never used vray so bear with me if these are dumb questions:
how hard is it to achieve this effect, and also tweak it? could it be viable for making skyboxes/skydomes?

get textools. it's a godly plugin.
also, max has a lot of good stuff built into the new unwrapper. i find that my unwraps don't take more than a few minutes. the main questions are what are you trying to unwrap, and what is your target platform? Are you doing something for realtime or will this be pre-rendered?

It's pretty easy actually!
And yeah, you can easily use this to make skyboxes/domes.
Have another render:

thanks.
on a side note i'm experimenting with doing my own AO in the UDK with shaders. probably very expensive but as long as it's a reasonable quality to performance cost then it might have some interesting usages if i try to apply the concepts in different directions.
How does this look now?

First layer of fluff done :3
Now to add fluff to mouth, and coat.
Along with a second fluff layer on the more characteristic parts.

You poor thing, you got some optimizing of scene to do, or upgrading of gear.

Did some reduction to his fluff, and added some fluff on the koat.

Adjustments to fluff will continue!
My journey to the perfect fluff is nowhere near completion!
So.. Too much hair, too long hairs, not enough hair, too short?
Changed the imagehost, stupid photobucket....

You should start working on the lighting, cause it makes the hair look ugly

I can gladly render in another light setup.
Don't know what you're doing this with but fading out the strands with an alpha gradient makes it look softer. Now it seems a bit rough in my opinion.
Made a female head in Maya, took me about two hours from an empty scene:

Well, if you think I'm using traditional planes to do the hair & fur, you're unfortunately wrong.
I'm going the hard way, using the hair and fur modifier, so I'll make adjustments adding a 2 or 3 passes to the strands.
Also, as of now the scene contains over 3 million strands of hair as geometry, render uses 6.5 gb of memory.

Since it is supposedly so easy, does anyone have any good tutorials or tips on UV mapping in Maya?

Nah I didn't mean that. It sure looks like particle hair but it could use some tweaking. I meant you could map a gradient going from the strand root with full opacity to tip with zero opacity. It'll make it look a lot smoother and not as rough as it currently is.

AAAaaaah! Quite interesting! Should be possible, but I'm gonna have to see how it'll work with the SSS
(yes every strand of hair have the same SSS material as the base) :)

that's throwing my sense of depth off
Started on a beret for the female head, not really happy with how the fabric of it turned out,
