Sexy ass rust and good ass lighting, thought the red part is kinda dull and feels out of place give it scratches and shit
my suggestion is that you try to do as much as you can in your high poly model. i know the designs are meant to stand out on the miniature, but a lot of the detail that a painter adds onto the figures could be done in the model, like small scratched or tiny bolts or other fine details. the thing that i think should be worked on for this gun is using details to sell it as actual size. currently the piece reads kind of as a miniature, because its so heavily based on the minis, instead of real world scale like it should. it throws off my sense of scale.
Yeah you're right, I think I'll scale some of the details down and add a bit more details to it. Only thing I'm wondering is how do you add believable damage through subdivision? It tends to smooth everything out.
That's pretty cool, I like the design of the shell and beam.
Got a little inspired by this, started modeling my own portal gun:

But then I got bored and instead started sculpting an alien-mouth-thingy:

But then I got bored again and now I'm playing Far Cry 3...

Imported it into Element3D.
Btw, put it into a GIF:
Sexy ass rust and good ass lighting, thought the red part is kinda dull and feels out of place give it scratches and shit
I agree, I got lazy with that one. I would've given the red part a better material, but it's going to be a part of a bigger scene and it's not very prominent there, so for that purpose I think the material works fine.

Damage passes would be done in a sculpting app

Were you trying to imitate the Vanguard from PS2?

I made a Roman Gladius!
I still have to skin it. Maybe afterwards I might port it to Skyrim or Fallout: New Vegas or something like that.
CC would be appreciated.

Well that's alright then.

I do not believe the handle and the sphere at the bottom are that thick.
maybe the sphere at the bottom, but the handle is definitely not that thick, honestly it looks weird to me as a whole on the handle.

Does anyone have some good tutorials on uv mapping and baking normals and that sort of thing? I'm very confuzzled.

Some rendered concepts I did in my spare time. The tank looks better with the new rendering.
Decided to give my first full model a try since I've only really done smaller, less complex models before. Still putting more detail into it here and there but overall I can't say I feel real happy with it. A few questions though, can anyone explain why the top of the turret opens up like that. I've remade it a heap of times and every time it still does that. Secondly, are those white lines around the front end and the muzzle break because of bad geometry? Lastly, what do you guys think of Lightwave? Using it currently due to my coursework requiring it and I feel comfortable using it but a lot of the time I see that people don't really hold it in high regard compared to 3ds or Maya.

I want C4D looks quite good for a beginner, plus I heard R14 makes it far more versatile.
Shame the only way to get it is to be a student, or rich :(

Its a good program to start with, and if you are into motiongraphics its the best for the job

I really want it, is there anyway to get it free (without the obvious bad ways)

I got the free student license, they didnt really demand a lot of info, maybe you can fake it to get it, or use some old student id
(without the obvious bad ways)
these days this is just how people learn software if they aren't already a pro/student/rich. imo there's nothin wrong with acquiring a program to learn it. just don't use the results commercially.

Highly agreed, if it wasnt for torrenting programs, i would never have been able to learn the things i know today.
I bet a huge about about of posters in this thread use pirated version, the only reason its such a taboo here on facepunch is because people think they will be banned, but you can im most cases only be banned for sharing it.

Agreed! Get the program regardless of how, learn it, and when you go commercial or can afford it, you buy it. If however someone offers you money for a job, reduce the cost to about half or one third of a regular cost, and accept it only as a token of appreciation.
There is really no correct way of calculating such.
I got a student license, and I've gotten a few freelance job offers, until now I've never done anything big, and I've never accepted more then about $100.
So you can accept money for it, but... Don't calculate the cost as you would if you're a commercial artist.
Though these have never been big projects, only project like:
A person contacted me because he want's a tiny vignette to announce that Sunday school for children starts "now" in his religious church.. It's gonna be about 30 seconds of animation involving modeling, rigging and skinning, animation and also video editing and probably a slight sound editing.
I probably won't accept more then $350 tops for the entire thing, while I easily could make $1400 - $1800 if I could afford a commercial license and didn't have another job.
At least that's how I view such.
