You're lucky, my keyboard doesn't even work anymore! Now I have to use this damn on-screen keyboard.
Quick question. If I used VRAYdisplacementmod on a sphere and in the modifier I set it to displace by 5cm, does that mean that the sphere will become 10cm thicker?
[editline]16th January 2013[/editline]
Also how do I go about something like this: dividing a very big texture (40k pixels) into four 10k pieces, and apply it to the model? Would I have to do some fancy business with the UV maps?
http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/maya/150R1/tiled_exr.htm
Should work on vray for 3ds max as well.
Trying to UVW Map the sword I'm making in 3DS MAX is giving me a migraine. Jesus I think that UV'ing is my least favorite thing about 3D modelling in general. Does anybody have some good tutorials?
Would anyone here be willing to help me out while I learn 3ds Max? Most of the questions I'll be asking is what shortcut is X and how do I do Y. I need somebody to help me, all my friends just ditched me :(
my steam is: essilence

In general, it's better to just look up material yourself and learn it independently, from your own experience. I'm not saying just open the program and try to figure it out, but if you're asking to add someone on Steam to ask questions like what is the shortcut for x function, etc, it just seems redundant, as questions of that nature are easily answered by a search. There are a plethora of modeling tutorials available for free, either as documents with images, or complete video series, just do a bit of searching and research, you'll find out over time just how capable and resourceful one human mind can be when forced to persist on one goal over a period of time.

I mean, it just seems to interrupt my flow when I have to google search "what is the shortcut for the move tool", and the questions I ask really aren't as a simple as I made them to be. I need another human because I'm bad at wording things for the search engine. Anywho, here's my first model made by just experimenting around.

too simple but yeah, ill try something more complex tommo.

I think the best thing would actually be to have someone skyping with you, and modeling something with you so you can follow their steps and explaining while doing what they do :)
I mean honestly, I know how to model, it's just transitioning from Blender to 3ds max. I'm just having a bit of trouble because Blender is more hotkey orientated.
Does anybody have a good way of inspiring yourself, sometimes I just really to a jolt of inspiration to boot up max and start working.

That's exactly why I proposed what I did in the first place :)
Even though you know how to model (I've seen what you've uploaded here, and it's not bad), it's still a good way of getting to know how to do stuff in 3Ds max.
Also you can get to know how to do Mental Ray rendering and how Materials are built :)

Could've included the 2K image but for some reason it didn't fit within the board

You want to do it? I know several programs that would make it easy.

I did a 100 days project, where i made 1 3D thing each day.
Boosted my inspiration and passion for 3D a lot.

Where to find some inspiration for techy stuff? I'm currently making random machinery [sp]in sketchup[/sp] and in a mad need for some inspiration (or idea stealing), especially for how to make plain metal surfaces more interesting.

Plain metal surfaces aren't gonna be exciting if it's just... Shiny metal.. The Geometry makes it exciting.
Well, it all depends on what type of shiny, you could add rust, or texture to the metal (like brushed metal).
I would suggest googleing metal texture and see what you find, or go out and do some study ;)
You might not even have to go out, there's generally a lot of metal surfaces inside your house/apartment/flat.

I'm talking about the geometry. Buttons, vents, screws, panels, things like that. And my surface isn't even metal right now, it's not textured.

This is what i've been working on. The back of the turret is quite detailed, but there's still a lot of flat surfaces.

Tried the AE CS6 Camera tracker for the first time. Pretty fast calculation, pretty clean track, and heavnly simple to use with Element3D.

yupyup, made it from scratch, used it as reference.
Haven't posted anything in here for ages, been bogged with work from Uni and such. Anyway, decided to have another stab at the PPK I tried and failed to do last summer, now that I've had much more practice with High to Low Baking (Which is what I couldn't get to grips with in the summer)

Very much a WIP, of course.

I remember on Polycount forums there was that guy who did really complicated "gates" or "doors", it looked very sci-fi and detailed. How was it called? Maybe it was even posted in this thread.
