I think I'm going to try modeling an F-16 tomorrow. No excuse not to now that I've got maybe the best set of blueprints possible to work from. http://imgur.com/a/7uLeV
Though you might get a laugh out of this, College got it through today: Don't go to Wolverhampton University.
i dont get why it's funny
i dont get why it's funny
They've put an image of Killing Floor on one of their leaflets, the front page of their leaflet they give out. Probably should have put that before.
oh that's uni marketing for you. it wouldn't surprise me if they google "video game" and put the first picture that comes up
hmmmmm close ups (didnt get the knob texture right.)
They look a lot better than they did. Nice and smooth now.
I was watching this new footage of The Last of Us and noticed that it seems that when you use the flashlight, it does some sort of light bounce simulation. I have no idea if it's faked or is just some real time thing. When it hits light colored objects or shiny objects, the area nearby lights up in a similar color. At 00:23 you can notice the light bouncing off the orange tiles onto the floor. I'm always impressed by what these guys accomplish on the hardware they use. Extremely talented people.
it's full real-time radiosity using virtual point lights, simplified probably as much as they possibly can manage. it's extremely low quality (being purely technical here) but looks fantastic in this video, though it's noticeable that it's splotchy and seems to respond a bit slow
oh that's uni marketing for you. it wouldn't surprise me if they google "video game" and put the first picture that comes up
I remember in high school one of those art school people were in our class showing their students "work" The first thing the showed was Animation vs. Animator, but they put voices over it.
could you post a picture showing the difference because I didn't understand half of what you said.
basically it's a modified cook-torrance specular lighting model so that it looks better than phong (basic cook-torrance lighting is an early precursor to phong lighting)
Hey guys, my school just recieved a 3D printer. I get to test drive it! :D I'm printing out a knob for a cooker - one broke so my mum has to turn it with an adjustable spanner. Will post results tomorrow
If only there was a 3D scanner, you could forever replicate various knobs from all manner of household appliances so you have spares on hand...
so much knob talk latley
:suicide: [editline]5th February 2013[/editline] we're also getting another one, might be a Makerbot Replicator, not sure though. Also a milling machine - Hidden Blade here I come! XD

I want a 3D printer... Maybe after college.
awesomeness
I hate every time you post a picture of that. I ended up getting an Akai LPD8 and a SynthStation 25 which came out to be about $5 cheaper and I'm really regretting. It's just obnoxious to use. Wish I got the MPK instead.
And I'm back with more TEXTURE FETISHES I am not proud of this work because I suck at it
In regards I my post about the 3D printer - I'm going to be doing it on Friday, me nor the teacher have any free time til then. Sorry guys, I WILL post results when it's done! [editline]6th February 2013[/editline] Managed to free up a little time, may be tomorrow, as I said, il update as it develops.
basically it's a modified cook-torrance specular lighting model so that it looks better than phong (basic cook-torrance lighting is an early precursor to phong lighting)
Cook-Torrance is not older than phong. Phong lighting was made during the 70's, a time where something as expensive as the Cook-Torrance model would not have been feasible to do. Cook-Torrance came in '81. Also, I didn't modify it at all. The only difference is converting trigonometry to vectors and that's not even a modification, just tailoring the math to gpus (the conversion is already out there so I didn't have to figure it out). [editline]6th February 2013[/editline] oh actually the only change is that it uses the schlick approximation. i would have shot for using the original fresnel term for fun (even though it's expensive as hell and nearly pointless when schlick's is so good) but I can't anyways since I don't have access to light color in unreal and thus can't do shit with wavelengths. also schlick's approx is p standard for realtime implementations of shaders that require a fresnel term
I'm too tired of bugs in 3ds 2013 so I'll be downloading an older version. Which one do you guys recommend?
what bugs are you having? it could just be user error. frankly dropping down a version will likely not help you. the programs mostly just build on top of each other because (as i understand it) removing stuff risks breaking the program and file compatibility.
If you're looking for better performance I'd say 2009 is the best bet, feels a lot less bloated. Might need to get Polyboost for it if you're used to the graphite modeling tools in newer versions of Max though.
3Ds max 2013 was crashing constantly when I was using it at Luton Uni and they had workstations, I even downloaded the latest patches and drivers to no avail!
I'm too tired of bugs in 3ds 2013 so I'll be downloading an older version. Which one do you guys recommend?
I'm using it and no bugs yet. The most unstable build I ever used was 2010, but it was probably because I never download those service packs, I remember there were a few ones for 2010. All other new versions worked very well, and all bugs (or crashes) I found were caused by plugins or anything like that.
My 2013 works flawlessly.
My 2013 works flawlessly.
Agreed, no problems found so far, although I'm not exploring the program to it's fullest.

if it was a college professor then that's pretty odd that they'd get something like that wrong. the papers and thus their publications dates are freely available. wikipedia even has a whole article on phong. here are the papers if anyone happens to be interested Phong: http://www.cs.northwestern.edu/~ago820/cs395/Papers/Phong_1975.pdf Cook-Torrance: http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cs283/sp13/lectures/cookpaper.pdf also I just came across this link: http://www.cs.utah.edu/school/history/#phong-ref it's pretty damn crazy to see just how many CGI pioneers went to the University of Utah. Sutherland, Gouraud, Phong, Catmull, Clark, Newell and Blinn and those are just the names I know off the top of my head.
So, my processor went bye bye last Thursday so I had to buy a new one. Therefor, have this LARGE render of john so far to compensate for my absence :) [img_thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/s/av1yr5ymvnssn1h/fluffwip3.png[/img_thumb] I'm gonna go through several adjustments until I'm happy with his beard and "sideburns" Also I spent a couple of hours yesterday making this: [img_thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/s/z5x8u29ndcdwlue/WIP1.png[/img_thumb]
