Nice diagram man, and thanks a lot... but I assume this is in Max or something? Can't seem to do it in Maya :(
Quick question, which version of Autodesk 3dsmax is best to start out with?
2010/2011/2012
I'm mainly interested in that the UI is easy to use or matches the most of the generic tutorial on the net.
Tips on starting out with modelling is also appreciated I guess.
Check out tutorials for using the graphite modelling tools, I ignored them as you don't need to use them but my course recently taught me about them and showed me how much faster it is to use them.
so im just starting w/ maya and dont really know what im doing. modeling seems piss slow in it and super clunky. when you make an object there's all that info on the right in the tabs and they seem kinda like Max modifiers but i couldnt get them to collapse or be deleted. am i not getting how they work?
help
help
Sounds to me like you're best off following some basic starter tutorials.
eugh :(
[editline]4th February 2012[/editline]
im probably just gonna cheat on my maya project do the modeling in max.

This is what I got after about an hour of cluelessly doing things in 3dsmax..
Uber 1337 pro modelling career here I come :v:
On a serious note can anyone here link some good or at least helpful tutorials/guides/tips/whatever?

Sorry man. I can't help you with Maya.
But Maya uses mental ray so it should have similar shaders.
I can finally render my simulation.
My new i5-2500K works fine and is about two times faster than my old C2Q Q8200.

I ordered that one for my new build yesterday! I can't wait for it to arrive.
Reworking the grip because the old one sucked balls for topology. I'm really only going to use these as a guide because I suck at thinking about curved surfaces in 3D space.
Acezors, thank you very much man, means a lot to me. If you send me the tardis model we can hide it in the film if you like :D we planned on doing one ourselves but forgot, we've already got a few time travel easter eggs in there. No worries if you wanna hold onto it though.
This sounds brilliant, I've PM'd you :)

The added thickness is better but you could still do a lo more wih it. Did you do as I suggested in the last thread?
Started working on a new scene.
Looooots of work to do.
Reaching the final stretch on my latest model and I'm comfortable enough to put it out a little. It's Rand from Breath of Fire 2:

Leggings and belt probably need redone again. I'm not entirely happy with them or the belt. Armlet's a piece of shit I'll be remaking next to make it actually work.
Loving the sculpt, but the leg muscles are really weird

I've not been looking at references, though I should be. I've adjusted the model a bit since that picture, so it slims down to the size of the of the body of the gun. I don't know what an FFD modifier is.
I made a simple lamp. Haven't done the light bulb assembly yet, cause I haven't found a decent reference of it yet.

somewhat related, anyone see this? http://www.daz3d.com/i/3d/free-3d-software-overview?
Daz3d stuff free. I've never used it but sounds like it's worth trying. Modeling, animation, scene creation, and character creation programs.

If you're starting out you probably want to learn how to model in a way that generally is regarded as "good" or "clean".
The high poly knife tutorial was pretty horrible for beginners imo. It just teaches a lot of cheating that results in a lazy modelling workflow.
It's ok for pros to save time but that kind of modelling habit is pretty destructive for beginners. Learn to model properly before cheating.

Skill level says intermediate too.
Bumped up the fluid resolution, took 6 hours to bake and that was with me quitting half way through the intended 500 frames.

Very strange line artifacts on some of the frames for some reason.
Rendered with a GPU renderer right?
These happen during the BVH building process.
I don't know why but they are in all my complex simulations.
Happens in Cycles, Octane Renderer and SmallLuxGPU.
Delete the frames with the errors if they aren't in every frame.

Would you mind posting the settings?

Just the domain settings.
My extremely lousy fence (In UDK), Haven't gotten to texture it yet.

I recommend you use 500 for the resolution though, depending on the size of your domain and fluids inside it the comp times will change dramatically so around 1.5gb req. memory should be good providing you have a good enough CPU

And the end time was effectively 7 for that render since i quit half way through.

Yeah and you missed the point. The person asking was stating that he/she was going to start from the beginning, learning proper modelling. Hence the remark.
