that could be a really nice sort of splash-screen for an animation/cg company
WIP Skip!
That looks like trash :zoid:
That's nothing, I'd need a 432,000x216,000 texture to get realistic shots from low earth orbit. Or a dozen 43200x21600 masks and a bunch of noise/speckle/etc maps.
Umm...that's not how it's done. If you have a zoom from outer space into a specific area on earth for example doesn't mean you should texture the whole thing with ridiculously large textures. The textures should change during the zoom and the switches hidden by having them look similar enough but be higher detailed and covering a smaller area. Search for earth zoom on videocopilot.
Still learning!
Decided to model myself a car for my slums, started and finished today. Never modeled a car besides military vehicles so this went pretty well. Perfect for my needs.
progress on the roman armor ish thing
The front of the torso looks unnaturally flat.
[img_thumb]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a345/ajackss/lifehood.png?t=1337640484[/img_thumb] Fits in nicely. (Small picture since I don't feel like wasting my time rendering)
Uploading a passworded version of the film for you guys, I'll be keeping it within this thread though... but you can share it with mates or whatever if you choose. I'll post the link up tomorrow, I'd love to see what you think. Unfortunately, I think it's actually a lot more impressive in the context of the degree show. We've won awards already, and received 3 job offers, which nobody else had. But when you compare it to the plethora of incredible graduate animations online I think it pales in comparison. I'm still super proud of what we achieved though :D I'll still share it though, you guys were really supportive of all my work so it's only fair you get to see the final product. Stay tuned ;) [editline]22nd May 2012[/editline] Also, one of said job offers is from Axis Animation, who done the reversed Dead Island trailer... think I'm gonna go for that one.

Now to to texture..?
You need extremely high resolution images to get any sort of realism out of close-ups of earth.
But if it's a closeup, then you won't have to render the whole planet with one single huge texture, would you?
But if it's a closeup, then you won't have to render the whole planet with one single huge texture, would you?
How are you supposed to align 8 different materials on a sphere so all their textures line up? I'd like to know so I could just load all 8 21k x 21k pieces of the earth map instead of having to use one blurry mess 21kx10k for the entire thing
Did a quick tinting job since I'm not texturing it, pretty sure it's final, I think it looks pretty good for my 2nd attempt at armor and I'm still new to humanoid shapes and what not. (yes I know the feet are ugly, 1st feet I've done and I had no tutorial :c )
better than my first human. I wont even dare to post it here. [editline]22nd May 2012[/editline] Well thankfully my earth is finally looking at least decent. I have been messing with it for over a week now making adjustment after adjustment and had to remake the materials and textures like 10 times. Compare it to the first test render in this link http://www.deviantart.com/download/300520456/planet_earth_1080p_by_ottothecat2005-d4yx72g.jpg

Let's say you have a render from outer space, you'd still have to load that insanely big texture for the thing even though you can't see any details. You seem to ignore all advice though so go ahead.
Maybe it would be easier for others to give advice if you said what you're going to do with it.
Planet images. Advice? I never asked for any advice and don't see any either. Obviously this planet, like anything I make, is being made to look nice from a distance or with the camera pressed up against it, or in this case pressed up against the upper atmosphere.
Let's say you have a render from outer space, you'd still have to load that insanely big texture for the thing even though you can't see any details.
By outer space I assume you mean a few hundred thousand KM away and not just high enough to orbit the earth. Anyway, does anyone know how I would do this?
put 8 different materials (panels of a larger texture) on a sphere so all their textures line up
Also this
when light is behind an object make the object glow, like this http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/407255main_iss021e031766_hires_full.jpg
