No..
So what do you mean by this, then?
[...] is being made to look nice from a distance or with the camera pressed up against it [...]

So what do you mean by this, then?
It means that it's detailed. It's good practice to do that. For example I made a tshirt and you could zoom in and see the individual threads (with a tiled 128x128 texture). It's just good practice to make things with any detail that you could see with the naked eye, as well as just being downright impressive. You don't have to always do that obviously, but I go all the way since I don't make things for real-time use.
It means that it's detailed.
But as I said, there's no reason to make it very detailed if it's only shot from a distance. And you said it's for a distant shot, or a close-up, but not for both? So which is it? I am confused now...
What it means is exactly what it says, that it will look nice whether it's 1,000,000 km away or 10,000. I am not sure how you got anything else out of that, but that's what it means.
Yeah, for fuck's sake, this is not the place to discuss texture resolution on 3D models.
Normandy SR2 hi poly with earth in background.. no depth of field it's just really close to the surface so it's a featureless blob.

0/10 Earth not high resolution enough.
Uploading a passworded version of the film for you guys, I'll be keeping it within this thread though... but you can share it with mates or whatever if you choose. I'll post the link up tomorrow, I'd love to see what you think.
Unfortunately, I think it's actually a lot more impressive in the context of the degree show. We've won awards already, and received 3 job offers, which nobody else had. But when you compare it to the plethora of incredible graduate animations online I think it pales in comparison. I'm still super proud of what we achieved though :D
I'll still share it though, you guys were really supportive of all my work so it's only fair you get to see the final product. Stay tuned ;)
[editline]22nd May 2012[/editline]
Also, one of said job offers is from Axis Animation, who done the reversed Dead Island trailer... think I'm gonna go for that one.
Very well done mate. Judging from the stills I've seen so far, your job offers are well deserved. Best of luck at whatever job you take and if you ever end up working in London, we might end up meeting someday!
I want to get into modelling buildings and basic furniture, since I need them for a game I want to make. What 3D program would you suggest for someone reasonably new to modelling (most complex thing I did was drawing a gun in 2D and extruding it). I have some experience with 3DS Max (Basic mapping, lighting, physics, vertex editing), but perhaps Blender is better for a beginner. Or perhaps SketchUp is a good way to start with designing buildings?
oh god no, Blender is not good for beginners unless you have a teacher, 3ds max is your best bet, 'specially since you have experience already.
Nah, definitely go with 3ds Max.
oh god no, Blender is not good for beginners unless you have a teacher, 3ds max is your best bet, 'specially since you have experience already.
I think my biggest problem right now is that I don't have a "feel" for modelling right now. With programming I can turn a problem into code in my head, but if I see an object I want to model, I have no idea where to begin. How can I work on this?
Also, making a game you say? What kind?
oh god no, Blender is not good for beginners unless you have a teacher, 3ds max is your best bet, 'specially since you have experience already.
I know this is a dead discussion, but I still don't agree at all. I assume you've tried Blender before making your statement? I do agree, though, that if he already knows how to use Max, that would probably be his best bet.

Looking for help? I've been wanting to practice and make some type of portfolio but I've never gotten the chance to work on a team.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I never work in teams. I only have bad experiences with it.
Maybe in a later stage when I need final models or something? Usually the problem is that I lose interest in a project and other team members get mad at me.
Really though, how do I practice modelling? Could someone make a list of increasingly harder things I should try?
This is the kind of stuff I need to be able to make for my game:

If you want a close-up use a plane, subdivide it a few times and bend it a bit.
Now use a smaller image texture or a part from the big image.
Using a huge image for 5% of what you see is a waste of time and resources.
If you have the planet in the distance, use a sphere with a lower res texture.
Everything else would be ineffective and stupid.
3DS Max is best if you can afford it/can use the student version. But I use Blender because if I ever want to sell my models or use them in a commercial game, there's no way I can afford the full license.

No I use Blender actually. :V

Most of that stuff would actually be pretty simple, modelling wise. A lot of time sure, but it's almost completely basic shapes. The hardest part would be texturing.

I learned Blender a lot faster than Max. Just sayin'. For some reason the hotkeys clicked really well with me.

Anyone wanna explain why 5 year old iMacs are rendering my scene in 8 minutes but my i5 2500k, 8gb RAM and GTX460 are bringing my system to a halt?

You could still sell your models, and no-one would ever find out unless you said something.
You could still sell your models, and no-one would ever find out unless you said something.
You could and couldn't, as soon as somebody figured out you'd be in so much legal hot water you'll be fucked for a very long time.
You could still sell your models, and no-one would ever find out unless you said something.
Not legally, and if anyone did find out, you'd be sued up the yin-yang. I had a friend who thought the same with Photoshop, and he was sued.

Let me just say the boxes of top hats at the beginning is fucking, amazing. And the rest of the film is absolutely fantastic as well, great job!
I wanted more of the film, I wanted to see what could happen.

Thanks man! The top hats are actually a little nod to The Prestige, which has similar themes. Not sure if you got that, or just liked the fact they were top hats. Check it out if you've not seen it.
