thats one hot little car man, nice work!
Using quads depends on what you're modelling really. For games, fuck quads as the engine will make your model tris anyway. Sticking with quads is more for hard-surface or really intricate organic deformation bits. Also, you can just modify the triangulation of your quads to fix that, too.
Well actually pretty much everything is triangles but you just can't see them. When rendering the render-engine will usually also turn all quads to tris.
modeling in quads is important in games too because it's easier to comprehend when you're sharing assets between different artists and also it makes rigging so much easier. really there is no downside to modeling in quads except it takes a bit more thought.
Yeah I agree except if you're modelling for mobile games or the like since you get more efficient definition with triangles compared to quads.
whoaoaA that's so colourful is that 2012?
It is 2012 alright. But the unwrapping window sucks. At least for me, when I close it or try to collapse the "Unwrap UVW" modifer, it freezes for several seconds before actually doing it.

[img_thumb]http://puu.sh/yGcI[/img_thumb] Why is the model still black even though I've applied the texture?
Perhaps because it is so huge? That little orange/yellow dot down there looks like a light to me, but I'm not sure because I don't use blender.
Ah, that makes sense. Yes it is a light. For those who use blender, is there a way to just have the model be full-bright or something similar? Or do I need to set up Lights around it?
Go under the little tab with the earth on, select "use nodes" in Cycles or "Global Illumination" in BI.
I'm not seeing any of those options under the world tab.
Just scale your model down. It's like over 1000m high. [editline]4th June 2012[/editline]
Go under the little tab with the earth on, select "use nodes" in Cycles or "Global Illumination" in BI.
He is in the viewport and doesn't use cycles.
Why is your model even that big? I rarely go very much larger than the grid. I just scale it accordingly afterwards.
It's a decompiled Dota 2 model, when I imported it in to blender it was that size.
Messing around with a quick Lego person [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Hrzbm.jpg[/img_thumb] Some questions though. To those who have used the mental ray Physical Sun and Sky; Is there anyway to make it less, intense? As it is now, I have to make the colors darker than they are in the render otherwise it'll completely wash everything out. Tweaking with the intensity makes it a bit darker, but it still seems like the contrast is messed up and I'm not seeing any options on how to tweak it. Also, how do some of you get plastic in your renders to look so perfect and plasticy like things are in real life? I haven't ventured much into rendering and shaders, so I'm not really too sure where to even begin looking online tutorial-wise.
Can I hide selection box by default in 3ds Max? I'm tired of constantly pressing J to hide it.

And if you want to make stuff look plastic like, apply a Fresnel reflection. This makes any surface area more reflective as the angle between it and the camera grows larger (meaning the surface faces more and more away). Clean plastic will be very glossy as well, with little blur in the reflection. I know Vray materials have a Fresnel option. If Mental Ray doesn't have that, you can use two materials (one not so glossy, one very glossy) and a falloff map based on camera-to-surface angles to blend the two together.

You have to click the tickbox by the reflection option until it says fresnel.

Nice! Looks pretty good, I would personally make the bluing of the gun a little bit darker. Excellent model! Okay guys here's my final: (click it for very big size) [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/49828537/3d/1DAE8_VanVaerenberghF_Examen3D2_01_render.png[/t] What do you guys think?

-Just found out their is an update 7, hopefully this fixes the shit ton of bugs I am experiencing.-
The reflection on the wheels just looks odd, like a mirror.
Well it's chrome.
Well it's chrome.
Chrome produces a less saturated, more grey Fresnel reflection with low index of reflection I believe. There's a difference between a mirror, and a piece of chrome. I always found chrome quite hard to realistically represent though.
i don't really like the lighting of the scene itself, its too cloudy and doesn't produce any sexy bright reflection
Decided to model and publish a model a day for a while. Good practice. Also, finally got my Slum city published.

The shapes shouldn't blend into each other but still have some distinct shading imo.
I'll fix that! Glad you guys like the car it's my first on I've ever modeled.
Has anyone had a problem in 3ds max with it occasionally crashing on auto save?
