Yeah actually everything costs a lot there. 3d-printing at our school in abs-plastic costs about 250€/dm^3 = 0.25€/cm^3. Plus supportive material at approximately the same cost.
Shapeways cheapest material is 1.4$/cm^3 = 1400$/dm^3. That's about 1000€.
Printing in stainless steel is 8000$/dm^3 about 6000€.
Cheap stuff...
um
um
shut down everything!
um
Yeah? So what if I wrote them in a different order the point still stands.
250€/dm^3 = 0.25€/cm^3 is exactly the same thing as 0.25€/cm^3 = 250€/dm^3.
1.4$/cm^3 = 1400$/dm^3 is also exactly the same as 1400$/dm^3 = 1.4$/cm^3.
I admit it might have been clearer if I'd written 250€/dm^3 = 0.25€/cm^3 and 1400$/dm^3 = 1.4$/cm^3.
I was wrong about the cheapest material though. There's some sandstone material that's "only" 0.75$/cm^3.

Yeah, a lot of 3D printing places use sandstone because it's basically sand and glue.
It's better than my one :)
Could I see it?
For the first time I got to make a 3D model out of an actual concept art and it rocks my socks off.
Sketches (kudos to my partner) and progress so far.

Topology isn't the perfect but it's not awful either. Whole model is 760 faces now, finished one will probably be at 1000, which is a reasonable amount these days.
I'm going to have to make a whole model out of planes in 3Ds Max for my school, anyone knows how to do this or has a good tutorial? Needs to be low-poly but I got no idea where to start.

Planes or boxes

I think I might have lost the images because it was about 3 years ago now haha. I'll have a look anyway.
Planes or boxes
You could try making a character by extruding/shaping a character as usual, then disconnecting the faces from each other and scale them away from eachother, if possible.

That's one weird 3d task...
You sure it's not planemodelling or boxmodelling techniques?
Yes its planemodelling or boxmodelling ofcourse. :v:
how is that a weird thing to ask? that's how most models start

Most car tutorials teach the plane modeling technique quite well. Just apply that to a character.
Finished the first (of 4) desintegration shots on my film. The final 8s render takes around 6 hours out of After Effects, so I cant be bothered right now... we'll probably keep it under wraps until the degree show. I'll post a still, there's 3 more on the blog here http://ticked-off-doj.blogspot.com/2012/02/second-shot-completed.html which shows the sequence.

Yeah it's not weird at all but I (and judging by the comments, I guess AceOfDivine and Mikkelmann too) got the impression that the task was to make a character out of separate planes or boxes that weren't supposed to be connected. That seemed weird and that's why I asked even though I guessed the answer to my question.
It could have been an artsy fartsy task too though. :v:

That's a cool concept and a nice model, but I just can't get my head around how you're supposed to reload the damn thing.
Maybe the clip slides in horizontally and doesn't actually curve up? :S
Model looks cool, but I reckon some of those edges could be a bit harder.
Some more on the colt.. I might soften up some edges and then all thats left is the inside bits :3

Lulz, sorry. :downs:
Maybe a good idea for a project in future. Haha.

That's why I've avoided that area so far. I may just redesign that area, because although it'll never get any use and will probably never be animated, it bugs the hell outta me :v:

I love this weapon and it's design.
Awesome job, are you going to texture it ?

I'm planning on using to to bake normals, so yeah I will texture it :p

You can just have the area where the grip is open, so that the magazine can slide in place! problem solved :)
