You shouldn't even try to learn Russian. Russian is my native language and I can say with confidence that learning English was ton easier than learining Russian for me. Seriously, if you want to learn Russian for just shit and giggles - go on and you will abandon attempts in a matter of days.
Why? Because Russian is so goddamn confusing when it comes to sentence structure.
For example: In English you can say "I love you". And THAT'S IT! You can't interchange words and such because of sentence structure rules. But in Russian that can be said as "Я тебя люблю", "Тебя я люблю", "Люблю я тебя". And in every of that case you can emphasize any word, thus underlining important information.
Plus, it has immense flexibility. In fact, you can make complete sentence out of infinitives.
Example for people who can understand Russian a bit:
Захотеть предложить попытаться встать, собраться, пойти найти купить выпить.
In fact last word isn't a verb, it is a substantive(noun).
Russian obscene language can be a subject of full-blown research.
In English you have 2 main swearing words: 'Fuck' and 'Shit'. In Russian you have 7 :
- 3 Fundamental:'Хуй', 'Пизда','Ебать'. Those are transated as 'Penis', 'Vagina', and 'Fuck' respectively.
- 4 Additional 'Блядь', 'Мудак(Муди)', 'Пидор', 'Манда'.(These can be not counted for real obscenities). These are commonly though not accurately translated as 'Whore', 'Asshole(Bollocks)', 'Gay/Moherfucker/Pedo', 'Cunt'.
After you got basic grasp of Russian obscene (Russian Мат, Матершина) language, let me show you some great examples of why you shouldn't learn this language:
Нахуя дохуя нахуярили? Расхуяривайте нахуй в пизду! - Roughly translated as: Why the hell so many? Re-verse this shit now!
Разъебаный в пизду хуеворот трехстворчатого загиба. - I overheard that 15 minutes back. Someone on the street seemed to be very disappointed about his broken car.
If you still not sure, visit this page and JUST FUCKING LOOK HOW MANY MEANINGS THESE WORDS HAVE: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D1%83%D1%81%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D0%BC%D0%B0%D1%82
Still wanna learn Russian?
I'm impressed.
Then read russian literature, take part in russian conversatons, watch russian news or movies. This should help you with pronuncation and overall knowledge.

To be honest with you, none of that has put me off. I have been in a school that forced me to take Spanish lessons everyday for 8 years yet I don't even know how to pronounce anything of the alphabet, nor do I barely know a single thing about the language - I just can't learn it. However, studying Russian for a few hours a day for the last 2 days or so I already know most the alphabet by heart and can pronounce each character in the alphabet (for the most part..still working on it). It just goes to show that when you want to learn something, you can with ease.
I have been wanted to learn a new language for a long time now because I think it it very interesting, I just hadn't found a language that sounded good/looked good/felt good (in my eyes) and when SilverBlu suggested Russian I became very interested, which (referring to the last paragraph) means I should catch on to it easier then most things.
I can read the Cyrillic alphabet and because of that everyone thinks I can speak Russian. Then they get disappointed when I tell them I can't actually speak Russian.
I made this thread a long time ago amigo.

I made a language learning guide ages ago. I hope you find it useful

(skip to end for russian stuff)
I actually tried to learn Russian some time ago and even learned the basics to conversation, but I got bored so I just stopped studying. V:v:V
It isn't that hard, and the alphabet is the easiest part, you can learn it in maybe less than one hour of studying.
I grew up learning Russian, having a Russian family, but as I became more accustomed to using English, I began to forget how to speak it fluently.
Now I can have basic conversations, though my grammar is horrendous. I'm pretty good at comprehension, though.
Hey, it could be worse, you could be learning Finnish!
As a native English speaker, Finnish isn't that bad. It surprised me how uniform a language it is; there's much less exceptions to the rules than in most other languages. It's just there's a fair bit to learn before you can start making any sort of sense of the language.

Finnish would be an easy language to learn if it didn't have 15 cases.
Finnish would be an easy language to learn if it didn't have 15 cases.
Well yeah, but once you've learned them, that's that. It's not like English where "I before E except after C" was thrown out due to there being so many exceptions it's practically worthless as a rule now.
Too bad French is gay. I'm learning that in school and it sucks donkey dick.
Ah you hate it now, but looking back it was one of the easiest passes of my Standard Grades. Definitely easier than English.

French is awesome.
French is awesome.
No it's not. French is THE ugliest of the romance languages, spanish and french sound fucking horrible in my ears. Trust me, I've taken both languages and both sound like shit. Russian is a good poetic language as it sounds smooth and nice.

Spanish doesn't sound good, but french does.
Canadian french sounds better than french french though
I remember a while back video games made me want to learn Russian.
I actually tried it but it was way too hard for me.
It also wouldn't be very useful either, since I live in Texas and no one speaks Russian. (Mainly English and Spanish)
get your favorite movie of all time (like 1 that u have seen a milllion times and have memorized) and get it in russian and watch it in English subtitles... this technique is the shit
don't
