Well, if we're discussing personal religious beliefs to avoid filling up the thread with "Fuck these people", I might as well pitch in since debating is all I really do. I'll be honest, despite being a Christian, I haven't ever read a standard Bible of any sort, and the closest I've come is a children's one I haven't touched since I was 5. But I've got my own beliefs about my religion of choice, and I'd say they're at least close, if somewhat bare-bones. My beliefs can be summed up pretty easily as, "Don't be an asshole/religious elitist/judgmental prick/etc. and try to help others whenever you can manage to." I never have understood the relatively common ideas of complex rituals and strict ways of living. I've always interpreted religion, the concept itself, as an all-ages, all-eras and all-walks-of-life guide to not being a horrible human being, rather than a strict code that must not be broken. Don't get me wrong, I (quietly) say prayers and hold the figures the religion and others like it are centered around (God and Jesus) in properly-high regard, but all of the sorts of lifestyle regiments and special rituals like baptism never seemed to be more than things living people tacked on to give religion more philosophical weight. I, like others in this thread, don't put nearly as much weight and emphasis on the bible as the commonplace "bible-thumper" stereotype. As far as I'm concerned, it's just a reference guide to go by generally with some illustrative stories alongside the lessons for the reader's sake. But I don't really trust the bible 100% for one simple reason: Even if the original first edition of the first bible was made by God Himself, it's been copied over by hand and press, made into new editions, (mis)translated and lost/recovered so many innumerable times by now that it's probably a near-completely different book. Even if God is infallible, anyone would agree that average people are anything but. Probably the only reason I could consider myself religious rather than simply an atheist with a decent moral code is the whole prayer aspect of it. And when I say this, I don't mean shouting to the heavens in a congregation, I mean silently requesting guidance or assistance from your deity/deities of choice. I really put weight in the prayer aspect because from my own personal experience, I would bet every last cent I have that it works. Of course, opinions/results can vary, and I could just as easily be as wrong as anyone else. It could be sympathetic aliens, a different deity other than the one I believe in, or even probability itself derping and warping that could account for my personal experiences with impossible things working due to prayer. I choose to believe it's the commonly referred-to monotheistic Christian God. You may choose something else, but that's the beauty of it, choice. As for pushing religion on people, not cool. I think that everyone is different, everyone has their own opinions and beliefs, and if you think you're justified in trying to crush their beliefs and plant yours in place of theirs like an opportunistic fly laying eggs, you are simply a horrid person. Spreading your faith to those who want to find one is all fine and good, but treating others like dirt for not following your faith, not doing so "properly", or simply looking differently than you do is the definition of being an unlikable shitbag. So yeah, sorry for the walls of text, I get unusually philosophical early in the morning.
I consider myself a symbolistic Protestant moderate. I feel the Bible was very bastardized by the Catholic Church, and is therefore not entirely trustable. I live by the standards taught by Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Peter.
How do you know those standards were not altered by Rome? And why no love for Paul? The Protestant stance is usually that we have formed our theology by sound reasoning from the Biblical texts themselves and not through Tradition such as Rome uses.
-An amazing post-
I would say to you that you are a better Christian than any of these girls. I guess i would put myself in the same pot as you. Being an Atheist, outright denying the existence of God, is fine, but it doesn't feed right for me. I don't place any weight on prayers, i'm probably more spiritual than religious. I've read a large portion of the bible, and i believe it is an incredible text. But being taught Religious Education through a Catholic point of view has lead me to become critical of it. I'm aware of the redaction's, missing sources, and conflicting accounts. I believe that the New Testament has some fantastic little quotes that everyone should live by to be a good person, and how i try to live my life. Things like; "If any one of you is without sin, let him cast the first stone" (John 8:7) and “What goes into a man’s mouth does not defile him, but what comes out of his mouth, that defiles him.” (Matthew 15:11). One of my favorites though is “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 19:23). I'd strongly encourage you to read the Bible, it's an excellent piece of literature. You can read it academically or spiritually, i don't care, but i urge you to give it a go.
Oh gods those two chicks have to be trolls right? "You can be whatever you want to be, but that's not what you look like" [editline]23rd June 2013[/editline]
I consider myself a symbolistic Protestant moderate. This seems fake. No one is this stupid.
More wonderful (read retarded) quotes from this video The mentioned "one regular one and Indian one." "India - like an African country in Asia." "You look African but you're Asian." "I know it's the not the right path.." "You look African, though, you can't be Asian. I think you're lying." "You can be whatever you want to be, but that's not what you look like" "you're like if an African person and Asian person had a baby." Other gems (read bullshit) "You're not Hindu, you just think you are." "I can't be around that type of presence." " I can talk to you but I don't know if we can be friends." " I hope saraa changes her mind, pray for her please." "Why aren't your eyes pointy?" Sickening, just sickening.
I really don't wanna watch this video after seeing quotes like these. Staged or not, saying shit like this is just insulting.
i wanna rape her for being so dumb
ahahaha what
How do you know those standards were not altered by Rome? And why no love for Paul? The Protestant stance is usually that we have formed our theology by sound reasoning from the Biblical texts themselves and not through Tradition such as Rome uses.
Damnit, I knew I forgot someone. Also, my view of prayer is not shouting to Heaven for the death of heretics, I just bow my head, give a moment of silence, and ask God to give me the strength and wisdom to solve my own problems. I'm sure he has a lot on his plate.
They're so stupid that I can't tell if they're joking or not.
I seriously think most atheists go through that stage. I used to be that way then I realized it was pretty fucking stupid. Now I'm pretty chill and laid back about it.
Yet somehow most people in r/atheism manage to stay in that stage. This anomaly must be further investigated by top men
Yet somehow most people in r/atheism manage to stay in that stage. This anomaly must be further investigated by top men
most atheists i know are worst than the kind of people shown in this video generally speaking most "declared" atheists are as fucking retarded as those "declared" christians
most atheists i know are worst than the kind of people shown in this video generally speaking most "declared" atheists are as fucking retarded as those "declared" christians
I know a pretty equal amount of people of chill atheists and religious people, so I personally don't like generalizing people. Bigotry and prejudice can be found in anyone regardless of whether they're a theist, an atheist, or anything in-between.
I couldn't take it after the racist remarks "do u consider urself african or asian?" "Asian Ofcourse" "but u're black so u can't be asian" "BUT I'M ASIAN" "den why aren't your eyes pointy???" it hurted me so much
"DO YOU FEEL GAWD?" Oh shit I almost died.
Yet somehow most people in r/atheism manage to stay in that stage. This anomaly must be further investigated by top men
by being in a contained community they're less likely to be directly confronted by people who find them offensive and thus are less likely to try and make an attempt not to offend these people. It doesn't help that the biggest "anti-reddit" communities provide r/atheism with strawmen for religious people on a regular basis despite most of these places secretly hating religion equally as much.
maybe they should believe in me ;^)
