So, um, what happens if you DO hold your breath?
You are at depth and you hold your breath while having compressed air in your lungs. As you ascend the pressure is lowering and the gas particles in the compressed air are expanding so your lungs pretty much pop.
I'll hopefully be taking a scuba course at my university next spring, very psyched. Both for the actual scuba and the monetary savings (only have to pay for the booties, dive log and mask).
How much does it cost for a typical first dive? I've been skydiving but never scuba diving.
How much does it cost for a typical first dive? I've been skydiving but never scuba diving.
If you take your Open Water course they usually include 4 dives to any type of dive site. For prices you would have to look do some research on your local dive shops.
How much does it cost for a typical first dive? I've been skydiving but never scuba diving.
I went to one of those "introduction to scuba" shallow water dives in florida, it cost about 160 dollars for a 2 hr lesson and 2 1 hr dives. Worth it imho.
Been diving in the red sea for a week and dive in the UK inland sites. Going to Malta in October for another week of diving. Just got my diving computer back too from the shop after a few weeks as it was getting a new battery. £52!!

In Atlanta, the only place to do some diving is in Lake Lanier so it's pretty expensive since only one or two shops do it, but when if you live in Florida there are so many choices that you don't necessarily have to break your bank to get certified.
Ever since I saw "The Abyss", Scuba diving seems so awesome.
First time I ever went Scuba diving I got ear ache a few hours before the first dive. During the pool session my ears were fine but we went to open water and dived down about 10/15ft i thought my head was going to explode.
Equalize harder.
I dunno why, but the whole blowing into your closed nose thing didn't work at all for me. The only thing that worked was yawning into my regulator.
I had one lesson in scuba diving once. I kept hitting my head on the top of the canister and it freaked me out. That was back in 2008 and I have no interest in scuba anymore, especially since I have a phobia of deep water now.
People say SCUBA is really dangerous but it's not really. Most of the accidents you hear about are people that didn't have a license but tried to do it anyway. Dive shops should check your license before you buy anything, especially down here in South Florida with all of the tourists. Keep breathing, watch your air, mind your decompression stops if necessary and you'll be fine. My first time diving me and my buddy couldn't make it to 15 feet because of our ears. The instructors rule of thumb was going down feels like going up in an airplane. As soon as you feel a little pressure, plug your nose and try to breath out through it with your head rocked to one side. If you did it right you should hear a little squeak of equalization. (For me anyway) Then do the other ear. The more pressure you have in your ears, the harder it is to equalize. So do it often. The deepest I've ever been is 70ft. It's pretty much all blue down there, not much to see. All the cool stuff is higher.
I can't swim. :ohdear:
thats pretty bad knowing how to swim is like one of those things everyone should learn.
Do you know of a place where I can buy single-use (or reuseable) breathing devices that hold air for 2-5 minutes? Or more?
Do you know of a place where I can buy single-use (or reuseable) breathing devices that hold air for 2-5 minutes? Or more?
Spare air sells them, but I have read (today, oddly enough), that pony bottles are better. Spare air apparently doesn't last that long.

Fun Fact: You don't need to be certified to dive. But all the little dive shops have kind of banded together and make it a requirement to get your tank filled and shit. It's a money thing basically Obviously it's a good idea to take courses though, there's too many dangers. But the best advice you could be given before going on a dive is this: KNOW YOUR GEAR. Practice out of water doing shit like Taking your weight belt off, letting the air out of your BC vest. They can malfunction and inflate and send your ass to the surface like a rocket and that sure as shit won't be fun [editline]17th June 2011[/editline] Also, don't go on a plane after diving

I did a PADI course and have to say that I hated it. I found it difficult to equalize pressure, which basically turned the entire dive into an uncomfortable experience involving my ears and nose feeling as if they would explode.
How much should it cost for lessons? The whole shebang, enough to get me an open water license.
night diving oh god that sounds terrifying
More exhilarating than terrifying, swimming in a dark void with nothing but a yellow glowstick. [editline]18th June 2011[/editline]
How much should it cost for lessons? The whole shebang, enough to get me an open water license.
My course costed roughly $150, and that consisted of a 4 day course with a 50/50 mix of lessons and pool diving, with an open water at the end. That was with PADI.
thats pretty bad knowing how to swim is like one of those things everyone should learn.
There's noone around here that gives lessons and I don't trust any of my friends.
If i want to go scuba diving, i have to get my lungs sellotaped to my chest or something So i think ill just stick with land :v:
This thing was freaking scary, I think it is some kind of eel because of it's shape. It makes a squealing sound constantly and it looks like it spends most of its time sat in the coral, this thing was FAT. The instructor made me stick my face right up to it.
The eel is called a Morina eel, if that thing catches your arm, it never lets go and drags you down into it's hole. I know a guy who knows a guy who got his fingers cut off because he was feeding sausages to that thing. Freaking scary shit.
