If you're not the main driver, insurance will stay the same price, if you're the main driver you will build up a no claims and get cheaper insurance each year.
Some policies gain no claims for named drivers too, but in that case you'll have your own (usually much higher) separate excess. I did it for a while on my mums 03 1.6 focus when I first passed. Aged 17 with no no claims as a named driver it was I think £3500 for both of us for the year, but I got my own no claims out of that... which I am benefiting from massively now but my excess was 6x (£600) that of my mum.
who actually gives a fuck. insurance companies are the nastiest conartists of them all. a good lot of them are owned by RBS and you know how they love to waste your money. milk them for everything you can, they do the same to you. just don't get caught. [editline]12th April 2011[/editline] or as sam said again. great mind think alike and all that.
Because the only people it hurts are other people trying to get insurance
Some policies gain no claims for named drivers too, but in that case you'll have your own (usually much higher) separate excess. A month or so ago I went to take out my first policy where I was the main driver (Ford Focus 08 Titanium 2.0 :D), I believed I'd have built up three years no claims which would apply as long as I stayed with Admiral, It turns out, the second I take out a new policy, even though it's still with Admiral, I lose all my no claims, so it appears it's only valid on my parents insurance. This is explained nowhere in Admirals policy documents, but every single person we spoke to stuck by that and refused point blank to give me a better quote. Annoyingly they're still the cheapest insurer for me so I don't really have much other choice. Paying £1700 for insurance and the fuel costs of a 2.0 automatic petrol have pretty much bankrupt me until I start working full time

Good choice on the Focus ;) I'm with direct line. They haven't shafted me over *yet*
