Get a 97-01 Impreza with the phase 2 EJ22.
Cheap
AWD
30mpg highway, ~22mpg city (about what I get in my wagon)
Rarely break down (my wagon has 199k, no breakdowns so far)
Low maintenance (My last oil change was after 10k miles)
Good handling on and off road (can vastly improve on road handling with a $50 RSB out of a 02 wrx sedan)
[QUOTE=Valon Kyre;31543510]Get a Plymouth Duster with a Slant 6. Cheap, easily repaired, lots of parts, and a damn good looking car.
The slant 6 is fucking indestructible, you can drain the radiator and floor it for 3 hours and it will still go good. Around 20-30 MPG, awesome looking car when done up.

I can never imagine a 70's car with anything but a massive engine with +400hp. It's just weird to see a car like that with just a slant 6 in it.
