i still wouldn't pay $10 to remove ads considering the fact that most other apps do that for 0.99
I've never actively gone out and searched for a geocache, but my cousin did stumble onto one (literally) when we were checking out the aftermath of the Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado. We pretty much hiked half way up a mountain following a burn trail and putting out small fires as we went. On the way back down my adventurous Cuz decided to walk through a giant ash pile, at least 2 feet deep. He ended up tripping on something, which happened to be this. It was a metal box or candy container, or at least it used to be before the fire got to it. Everything was burnt to a crisp. However, the person who made it left a note inside the geocache as well, and thankfully graphite doesn't burn. "Congratulations! You found my badge and cache! Hope you enjoyed the hike!" Never in my life did I ever expect to actually be part of finding a geocache, let alone just walking into one randomly on a burnt mountainside. Apart from the piece of pencil lead that was sitting at the bottom, the entire contents were toast. There was one other thing inside the geocache, and it was this pin: Dunno what it is but if it's anything geo related you guys probably know.
Wow, I've never heard about this before and it looks very awesome. I checked the website and there are some geocaches near my location. I think I'll start caching soon! ;p
Apparently there is one literally 2 minutes up the road from me, I might check it out tomorrow.
I've done some geocaching before around town, used a whole tank of petrol finding them - though some seemed to have been taken. Just bought a small container to make a cache with.
Just got back from finding a couple of caches. One was pretty easy and happened to be just across the road from where one of my friends used to live, the other was up at a place known locally as hangman's hill. Me and my girlfriend spent a good half an hour looking for it on what turned out to be the wrong side of the fence before we gave up, we decided to have another look after we found a way round to the other side though and she managed to find it after about 5 minutes.
If you're going to do this in conservation areas please do it near the paths and away from sensitive locations. This spring while walking in what passes for a nature trail in San Diego I stumbled across a geocacher who was foot deep in a vernal pool, one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet, searching for something she thought 'might' be there. After she (reluctantly) got out when I explained to her what she was doing and threatened to call someone when she refused by telling me it was "none of my fucking business" she went straight over to some poison oak and began searching there. Circling back around I found her in the pool again. People are fucking stupid, if you can keep them from being stupid in places where they could do harm to someone other than themselves that would be wonderful.
Now instead of paying people for a service I'll give them the GPS coordinates to a stash nearby. I'll be a true STALKER.
I've gone geocaching with my uncle a couple times a year, it's pretty fun. Never gone by myself though.
what's the recommended geocaching app?
Some dumbasses put a geocache on our plot. It was promptly smashed to bits.
I've got a fairly large number of geocaches in my area... the best ones, I think, are the virtual caches, where they just send you to a cool location to check out. One of my friends actually has a microcache in the stop sign on his street. Whenever we want to show someone what geocaching is, we take them down to it and pull it out. Then we hit the 4 other geocaches in the area, and they get hooked every time.
When I first heard about this, there weren't many in my city, now there is heaps in my Suburb. This is one though, which might be a bit tricky to get to [t]http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7422/9589084092_da174334cb_o.png[/t]
found 2 caches yesterday

You should check the description if you haven't already.
Some dumbasses put a geocache on our plot. It was promptly smashed to bits.
wow you are an asshole
wow you are an asshole
The official Geocaching guidelines says you have to get permission from the landowner or equal. Can't go around putting objects in people's garden without permission...
wow you are an asshole
I am an asshole for not wanting random people snooping around on our plot?
I am an asshole for not wanting random people snooping around on our plot?
Smashing it isn't going to stop people going there, the location will still be online for people to see.
Holy shit! I live in a very small tourist town, but there are at least 70 of these things scattered around me & lake Michigan. This is gonna be a sup[er fun treasure hunt, thanks for helping me find a new hobby.
I went out and found 6 today! This is a very exciting hobby, I think I might just pay for the site membership.
We found a cache just behind the school a few years ago, pretty cool. Might do this one tomorrow, as i'm lazy as fuck
Oh man, there's one in the park just across the road from me, I know where I'm going tomorrow
I am an asshole for not wanting random people snooping around on our plot?
No you're an asshole for smashing the cache to bits, you could've moved it off you're property and changed the coords for it
http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=20721106-6937-40df-986b-4f441ce0b7ba What the hell?
No you're an asshole for smashing the cache to bits, you could've moved it off you're property and changed the coords for it
Yeah because he has to go out of his way to do something when someone illegally put it on his property
Some dumbasses put a geocache on our plot. It was promptly smashed to bits.
You are the embodiment of 'no fun allowed'
Yeah because he has to go out of his way to do something when someone illegally put it on his property
What does smashing it solve? Now he'll just have people spending more time on his property looking for something that isn't there.
Me and my family used to do this a lot. My favorite items were the "travel bugs". They're items with a tracking number on it (It's usually a dog tag attached, that the owner recieves when registering the object.) Sometimes the item has a "goal", like to get to a certain country or city, some only wish to track where it's been. If the owner wants the item to go to a certain place, they usually put some sort of note on or with the object, and it's considered proper etiquette to not take it unless you're going to drop it off somewhere closer to it's destination. Here's an example. This one's a coin and it wants to get to italy "by as many boats as possible," and then back to it's home in Sandnes, Norway. Maybe the OP could add something about the trackables? [editline]27th August 2013[/editline]
Yeah because he has to go out of his way to do something when someone illegally put it on his property
He could have tried to contact the person who placed it, told them it was on his property and ask them to move it to somewhere else. [editline]27th August 2013[/editline]
I placed one of my flip knives in the box, wrote in the book and then hid it close to where I found it, so another traveler may seek its story. It was a magical moment for me, and I will never forget the tales that notebook held.
You kind of aren't supposed to leave knives in them. Same goes for live ammunition (not sure about spent shells or casings) and food. Just letting you know if you ever decide to seek another cache. [editline]sdsd[/editline] I think I might go out and try to find one this weekend, if I can find my GPS.
