I had an uncle who was in the Navy. He told me a story about the first time he passed the equator (either that or the date line). Let's just say it was an interesting ritual.
I've read about that. It seems rather disturbing :v:
good luck on becoming a sea man :v:
I am leaving for Navy basic training in nine days, October 9th. I am going into the Submarine Eletronics field. My contract is for five years. I am hoping to get a degree while in the Navy, but I don't plan on reenlisting. I am not really worried about bootcamp. What I am mainly worried about is that I won't be able to get a degree, and that I will be stationed some place crummy. I was wondering if there are any facepunchers who could offer me some advice on my upcoming career in the military.
None of the recruiters I talk to can really answer my questions because none of them were aboard a submarine.
Some questions I have are:
- What is A and C school like?
- What is the diffrence between ET FT & ST (if I even get to choose)
- What is the schedule on a submarine like? Is it 24/7 work, or is there time where no one is working?
- Will I even have time to pursue a degree under my career field?
- Also what bases should I choose if I get a choice? And What is Groton, CT like?
Thanks.
I got out of basic a few months ago. You wouldn't realize it, but the navy takes excellent care of you and wants you to succeed. The RDC's scream, shout, IT you, and do everything under the sun to you (I know mine did) but it's their goal to get you out of there.
- What is A and C school like?
I'm not sure about you submariners. The only thing I know about A and C school is that there's a LOT of classes, but there's more liberty granted to you. You're allowed to have your phones, buy laptops, and do anything a civilian would. Just don't drink on phase one liberty.
- What is the diffrence between ET FT & ST
I don't know a whole lot about those rates, considering I'm an undesignated. But I can half ass it and get something off wikipedia.
ET
ETs are responsible for electronic equipment used to send and receive messages, detect enemy planes and ships, and determine target distance. They must maintain, repair, calibrate, tune, and adjust all electronic equipment used for communications, detection and tracking, recognition and identification, navigation, and electronic countermeasures.
FT
The Fire Control Technician (FT) is responsible for all operational and administrative aspects of the submarine's computer and control mechanisms used in weapons systems and related programs (including all Submarine LAN systems). You cannot enlist with a guarantee for this rating. Instead, you enlist in the Navy's Submarine Electronics/Computer Field (SECF). Following Enlisted Basic Submarine School (BESS) and the first portion of the Submarine Learning Center pipline course, you are assigned to be trained as ET-COM, ET-NAV, FT, or STS. Your rating is determined from your preferences, scores receved in the above two schools, and the "needs of the Navy."
ST
The duties performed by STG-AEFs include: operate sonar sensors for detection and classification of contacts; operate underwater fire control systems; identify sounds produced by surface ships, torpedoes, submarines, evasion devices, sonar transmissions, marine life and natural phenomena; analyze, interpret and report all acoustic data; identify the characteristics, functions and effects of controlled jamming and evasive devices on sonar operations; prepare and interpret sonar messages; maintain charts and plots; operate tape recorders, bathythermographs and fathometers, computer localization subsystems and data entry terminals; recognize major equipment malfunctions during sensor operations; perform preventive and corrective maintenance on sonar equipment and underwater fire control systems including use of general purpose test equipment; identify electronic components on schematics and tracing major signal flow; use hand tools and portable power tools; operate underwater communications equipment.
From what I've overheard. It's not that bad actually. It's cramped, loud, and there's this thing called 'hot racking' which is where you take the bed of someone who gets up for their job/watch/whatever. It's not all work. I heard there's something like a 9/9 workday. 9 hours work, 9 hours to do what you want/sleep and all that. Rinse and repeat.
- Will I even have time to pursue a degree under my career field?
Yes.
- Also what bases should I choose if I get a choice? And What is Groton, CT like?
If you graduate at the very tip top of your class, only then do they allow you to choose where you'd like to be based. I'm not sure about sub bases but I'd defiantly choose somewhere where it's warm, like Hawaii or something.
Good luck shipmate, and anchors aweigh.
"Good luck shipmate, and anchors aweigh". I remember when I was a brand new sailor with motivation in my heart and a twinkle in my eye. It brings a tear to my eye.
ET is apparently a pretty alright field, and once you become a petty officer you'll have quite the workload. I went through training with one ET2, and while he was re-classing, he had nothing but awesome shit to say about it. Good luck bud.
Unless you're a corpsman or a SEAL, Marines will fuck with you.

Normally I'd talk shit, but most corpsman I've met have been good people. Oh, pointer, rate elitism or 'rate-ism' is for slobbering shit-wizards, don't do it.
I've seen too many fucktards talk about how much their rate is better than yours, when your going on liberty at 1500 whilst they're they're working until 2200 you'll see the futility behind such comments.
Don't drink sea water.

I'll never talk shit about being a corpsman, being in the largest most competitive rate in the Navy sucks. Less than 9% of our exam takers are ever advanced due to outrageous cutting scores. Also, a lot of us will never see the "real navy" or shipboard life (or see it only once) instead getting stuck between shore duty and the green side. With that being said I do love the Marines I take care of now to death, I just don't think I'd like to actually be with the marine division or anything.

Watch Das Boot. It will teach you everything about sub service.

If you're on a submarine, it is my understanding you will be studying all the time until you reach a certain point (I forget what that threshold is). But it makes sense cause nuclear submarines are some of the most advanced, complicated, and sophisticated units the world. One fuck up could mean the death of your whole crew or even the death of millions considering the nuclear payload.

You'll be studying all the time to get you warfare qualification. If you don't get it you look like a big shitbag.
