Valve is a criminal! Stop right there criminal scum! (User was banned for this post (Reason: Meme) [event] 142678 [/event])
There's no tax on games. I've bought games from steam before using prepaid credit cards and they never did this shit. And they really should have a message or something instead of just charging a dollar. And also, there's no activation on the prepaid card I got. It's a charge from Valve.
Maybe you should use a real banking card credit/debit. Since if they screw you over on that one well they can get in some big trouble. Also be sure to have more than EXACTLY $50.00 dollars on it next time.
The OP's avatar fits perfectly on how I feel about the OP and this thread
You should be able to check your card's balance online. It'll list charges, including any activation fee. Tip: don't buy any prepaid debit/credit card unless it's a Visa or Mastercard affiliated one. It's just not worth the hassle in the long run. edit: I just checked on Steam, it said "final taxes and total will be determined..." after I added it to my cart. That was a clue that a $50 card might not be enough for a $49.99 item.

ugh you guys. listen to me. 1. card has $50.00 on it 2. you click purchase gtaIV 3. it subtracts a dollar because you made a transaction 4. you have $49.00 left 5. you try to purchase the $49.99 dollar game 6. you are .99 short. 7. valve says you don't have enough money to complete the transaction. 8. you try again 9. ANOTHER dollar is subtracted because you made another attempt at a transaction 10. you have $48.00
I've been waiting forever for GTA IV to come out for PC. I was happy when it came out on steam. I went out and bought a $50 prepaid credit card, and happily went home to buy my game. I put in all the information and everything, but they say my card has been declined. Puzzled, I go to the credit card site to check my balance. I now have $49.00. Valve charged me a dollar. For no reason. I thought that maybe I could buy my game after they charged me this dollar, so I go to try the transaction again. They steal ANOTHER FUCKING DOLLAR. Now I'm stuck with a $48 prepaid credit card and no GTA IV. I sent Valve two support questions. I'm extremely angry right now. There's absolutely nothing on their site that says anything about charging me a dollar for no reason, and to stop me from buying my game while they're at it just really makes me mad. Is there ANY possibility that they'll give me credit? I really have no other use for this fucking gift card. This is really fucking bullshit. I'm really just venting here. Anybody else have this problem and actually get a happy ending?
Valve didn't take your dollar; the company of your pre-paid card did. Looks like you should stick with ATM/Debit card accounts at your bank. :v:
If I buy from steam, my games, for example, left 4 dead, is $50 on steam, works out to be $73 (could be more or less now). It depends where you are. Don't blame valve because you screwed up.
Where the hell do you live?
EDIT:Picture so people stop telling me it's the card charging money.
Have you ever even bought anything from Steam? You'd know that Valve doesn't take $1 from every transaction you make. It's your card company; read the fine print of it next time. Edit; Besides, with a $50 giftcard, and a $49.99 game; you wouldn't have enough money to pay the tax on it.
It's preauthorization, you'll get the money back within 1 business day. It's a security feature when there's no checking account involved. If you don't believe, under the reference number it says "Point of sale Preauthorization: Checking: No account.
Every prepaid card I've seen or used has had some kind of activation fee associated with it. I bet it's in the terms of service somewhere for your card.
Oh, there is an activation fee. You pay a little extra when you buy it at the store. In reading the terms, they said something about if you use it at a restaurant they will try to charge extra for the tip, so the card would be declined. I think that's what valve did. But I still think it's fucked up that they charge that and don't let me buy the game.
The game is $49.99 without tax, so you should work out the tax before you buy a game if you're that poor.
look at the bright side. you can buy 2 more gigs of ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145034
The game is $49.99 without tax, so you should work out the tax before you buy a game if you're that poor.
Steam doesn't charge more than the listed price.
Those are pre-authorization charges. They will be reversed within a month. edit:
In situations where the exact fee for a service or good is unknown until after the service/good has been received, the merchant may apply a pre-authorization for a specific dollar amount. Examples include car rentals, hotels, airline tickets and gas stations. Pre-authorizations are used to reserve a certain amount from your card to make sure that money is available to complete the transaction once that the final amount is known. Pre-authorization charges are usually reversed in 7 to 10 business days once the actual charge is applied to the card. We advise all cardholders with pre-authorizations to check their balance via our web site www.progresscard.com and contact the merchant if the pre-authorization is not released.
https://www.progresscard.com/webapps/debit/chp/en/htmls/faq.html#12 edit: I just noticed that IllegalPaste said the same thing, so thanks for thanking me anyway :ahaw:
The game is $49.99 without tax, so you should work out the tax before you buy a game if you're that poor.
No sales tax where I live, yet. :v:
Steam doesn't charge more than the listed price.
LIES! :v: They do in the UK, or at least with paypal, I'll try with my debit card at some point.
It costs 57 something to buy a 49.99 game off steam. I used a ONE HUNDRED dollar prepaid card for L4D and was charged 57 something or other...
Guys, how can it be a service charge? The account clearly says it is paying 1 dollar to VALVE. Why would Visa give a free dollar to valve every time some one uses the card? If anything, it would send the dollar to visa.
I don't get how the blame instantly goes to Valve and how they are taking little bits of some random kid's money just to fuck with them. There is fine print on another party's behalf (your stupid prepaid thing) that you obviously overlooked. You're overreacting about two dollars.

Wow, what assholes.
this children, is why we use mommie's credit / debit card instead
I'm really just venting here. Anybody else have this problem and actually get a happy ending?
Well, I had this problem and ended up getting a handjob.
Steam doesn't charge tax on games, guys.
It's amazing how the first instinct is to blame someone else instead of yourself.
Especially when you're completely right in doing so :rolleye:
Steam doesn't charge tax on games, guys.
Yes they damn well do. I've always had to pay tax on Steam.
Especially when you're completely right in doing so :rolleye:
Except he blamed the wrong company.
