Yes they damn well do. I've always had to pay tax on Steam.
They can tax you if you live in the state of Washington, or a state that has a Valve based company.
ugh you guys. listen to me. 1. card has $50.00 on it 2. you click purchase gtaIV 3. it subtracts a dollar because you made a transaction 4. you have $49.00 left 5. you try to purchase the $49.99 dollar game 6. you are .99 short. 7. valve says you don't have enough money to complete the transaction. 8. you try again 9. ANOTHER dollar is subtracted because you made another attempt at a transaction 10. you have $48.00
They can't charge a transaction fee untill a transaction is actually made. Before that would just be theft. And pre-paid cards don't have tax, you pay that when you buy the cards. I don't know if it's been asked yet but, why didn't you just buy it with a debit card?
Steam doesn't charge tax on games, guys.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/19900/ Click Add to cart.
Final taxes and total will be calculated during checkout
solution: 1. make a paypal account 2. put the card on paypal 3. buy the game from steam 4. download your game 5. play your recently purchased game
They can tax you if you live in the state of Washington, or a state that has a Valve based company.
What this guy said. You're only charged tax if you live in the state the company is in, valve is in Washington.
What this guy said. You're only charged tax if you live in the state the company is in, valve is in Washington.
Right, which is why I paid 10.89 cents for Gmod in California, right? Edit: You pay state or federal tax in Steam, always.
oregon has no sales tax :>
taxes are for squares. who pays them anyways?
It's amazing how the first instinct is to blame someone else instead of yourself.
So fucking what, if you come out ahead in the end it doesn't matter, and don't act like you wouldn't do the same! Everyone would! It is kind of like the scenario where you have the ability to rob a bank and NEVER get caught, would you do it? Some say yes, and some say no, but everyone saying no, is saying yes in their head, they just don't want to admit it. Every single person in the world is greedy, they just don't act greedy because of standards and such. You can say this isn't true, but it is, oh...it is.
I've tried buying a game from steam once with a visa debit card once and had nearly the same problem. I never got the game and I was fucked for 3 weeks, the time they finally returned my money and canceled the transaction. :( lol
You have enuff money for a fleshlight at least, get that.
Has it occurred to you that steam also charges tax? a $50 card wouldn't pay for it. EDIT: damnit, ninja'd.
I know it's not Valve's fault. But before you figured out the actual problem everyone was saying it wasn't valve's fault for no reason. If it was EA, everyone would be like "O ma god. you fuggin nazis>>...!!"
Right, which is why I paid 10.89 cents for Gmod in California, right? No tax here. (Paypal, California)
This happened exactly to me(Yeah I just made a thread about it unknowing of yours) We both used a Visa gift card, and it gave us a transaction fee... I usually use master card gift cards and I never had problems with that (bought tons of 50$ games with it) but I guess Visa is just being REALLY gay now...

Get a job, get a bank account, get paypal, profit off of your new games without hassle! Paypal is pretty much universally accepted. Scary how it's almost a banking institution with no same regulations that banks have.
This is just another way to prevent kids from buying things online.
Valve is a criminal! Stop right there criminal scum!
Wow, I thought I was cynical.
You thought wrong, didn't you?
Just why would they take a single dollar from you instead of earning 50+ from the transaction, anyway? You didn't think this through at all. :v:
Sue them
No tax here. (Paypal, California)
Paypal only lists the item and the shipping costs. Doesn't display taxes I believe. Meh, I dunno. It says I paid 98 cents for Half-Life, but I'm sure I paid a little over a dollar.

They went away as soon as the charge for the game was no longer pending though.
Paypal only lists the item and the shipping costs. Doesn't display taxes I believe.
Yes it does, it tells you the total amount you paid, including taxes, shipping, product, etc - the total lump sum you sent money.
