oh shit the chinese are censoring it

Yes my comrade! let us drink vodka and rice wine and talk about killing americans and stuff...
OP, I'm thinking about going to China to study at Sun-yat-sen University in about 2 years and I'd like to get some ideas of what China in general is about, because honestly, I'm a bit nervous about living internationally, but I can't let the opportunity pass. Any information would be awesome :)
Also, for those of you who don't know, Sun-yat-sen university is in Guangzhou, which apparently censors everything.
The cencorship isnt that bad. You can view most things on the net, mainly not facebook and youtube but a simple VPN can let you access those sites. From what i remember, that university is beautiful. I'm in Guangzhou and its fine here. Pepople are great, just dont get on the wrong side of the police. OP is in Hong Kong which is different from China.

That's a very interesting mix of Cantonese and Mandarin you've got there.
What is the main language in Guangzhou? English and cantonese?
My parents treated me differently. Always told me to cover my eyes in kissy parts and sexy time parts, but they let me watch and play the bloodiest, goriest shit ever (Like postal 2)
Look at your country. Europe tends to be the other way around.
What is the main language in Guangzhou? English and cantonese?
Mandarin. Cantonese mainly stays in Hong Kong. Then its mandarin for the rest of China but each province has its own version of the language.
Japan probably needs censorship on porn as their birth rate is pretty low.
China is the other way around. Need no censorship because of their high birth rate.
What the fuck does porn have to do with birth rates?
What the fuck does porn have to do with birth rates?
Well, if everyone watches uncensored porn, they masturbate all the time and dont meet womens or make babies :O If porn is censored, they dont wanna watch it and have real sex.
Mandarin. Cantonese mainly stays in Hong Kong. Then its mandarin for the rest of China but each province has its own version of the language.
A lot of people still speak Cantonese in Guangzhou.
You're talking about censorship in China and the biggest thing you've noticed is blurry guns?
Why not the whole "silencing dissent" thing
What dissent? There is no dissent in China.
That has been... dealt with.
To go to Hong Kong for college. People really have the wrong mind to think of what it's like here. My dad is the director of innovations for the shoe company Brooks. I know that when I go back to America to live there, I will have a secure job for my career. When I apply for a job in America, I will be looked at more than someone who didn't graduate internationally compared to someone who did graduate in America. It's because we make so much business in China and knowing the country and understanding hard accents is a giant plus for people like me.
And also, Hong Kong is NOTHING like China. Hong Kong is like a better New York. It's its own country pretty much. It's my favorite place in the world, officially. The people dress great, the girls are beautiful. A lot of people speak English, more than I imagined.
2 pages late, but fuck yeah! Hong Kong is awesome :D
except our economy and our money is worth dirt.
Wow, there's a lot of sinophobia in this thread.
Here's the reality of it: living in China can be perfectly fine. It depends mostly on the location - the cities in east and south tend to have very decent living standards.
Anyway, for the people in this thread who have been wondering about Japan's censorship: that law is from 1907. It remains unchanged due to political, not cultural, inertia. Uncensored pornography is distributed freely on the Internet and as material sold under the radar. Nobody cares about the loopholes because that law is more or less obsolete.
I just hate it when people freak out about seeing a penis in TV.
"Oh my Goodness what on earth is that! Quick, Charlie! Close your eyes! Dont look at that hideous, satanic thing!"
every scene where someone is holding a gun to someones face, the gun is blurred out.
do they do that in text too?
you better watch out mother fucker I've got a
Interesting I've never seen this in my time in China. I've been here almost 9 years and the only censored thing I know of is the Internet, no Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo or imageshack. Being in Hong Kong you've got it lucky, Beijing sucks at times:v:
For an example of censorship, I went to Beijing once and found out that half the images in the LMAO pics thread were censored. They censor it out by blocking the sites the images originate from
[editline]11th October 2011[/editline]
And my internet crapped out immediately after I posted that, I think they are on to me

Do you know how hard it would be to block 9/10ths of the internet?
And Shiftyze was never heard from again.
I know right too much censorship no wonder most of the young kids want out
I would probably visit Hong Kong. Not the rest of China though, where the sky is all smog now. I couldn't live in China, though. East asian girls don't really suit my fancy. I'd constantly have to check the chick's private parts to remind myself i'm not with a 12 year old boy. Although, if i had to pick one group of East Asians as most attractive it'd be Koreans.
OP is born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
Just kidding.

Makes sense
The worst part of censorship is *** ***** * ****.
The worst part of censorship is *** ***** * ****.
I had to read some declassified documents for a research project once
now I eternally fear the black rectangle (and black ops is totally unrealistic in what they censor, just sayin)
fuck da police

I wonder if copyright infringement is even a big deal in China.
I wonder if copyright infringement is even a big deal in China.
why the fuck did you bump this
Aw man now I miss Hong Kong. Chinese New year and it's the dragon this year! Too bad I'm stuck in university studying and can't visit family :(

Nope. When I went to a large electronics only mall in Shanghai, pretty much any store that sold video games only had hacked consoles, flash carts, all that jazz (They were all pre loaded with games etc). Not a single legitimate game in sight.
