Yeah, this isn't a good idea considering what can happen. :v:
Quick, lock thread, delete OP, ban Facepunch
THIS. Transatlantic is the greatest band playing 70's style prog out there at the moment in my opinion.
Listen to Haken. If you don't ejaculate pure win then you're doing it wrong. Also I have a job interview at a record store today, where I'm also picking up a copy of In the Court on vinyl :buddy:
So, back to actually talking about prog. Who here is fucking psyched for Fly From Here? I mean, it would be amazing if they had Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman, but from the old versions of We Can Fly From Here that were demoed, it sounds like it's going to be an awesome song.
How about we make a list of essential prog bands to go in the OP so we don't go through this back & forth cycle of spewing out bands every few pages. Also if Fly From Here is anything like Drama (which it may well be given the similar lineup and the fact the title track is an expanded recording of an idea from the Drama period) then it should be kickass. I love aggressive Yes. Aggyessive?
What band do you guys think of when you think of prog? As in, say, the most stereotypical example. I think of Camel. :v:
King Crimson for me.
Keep dem mowing blades sharp
Keep dem mowing blades sharp
I know what I like and I like what I know
How about we make a list of essential prog bands to go in the OP so we don't go through this back & forth cycle of spewing out bands every few pages.
Automatic Fine Tuning Camel Caravan Emerson, Lake & Palmer Family Genesis Gentle Giant Jethro Tull King Crimson Mike Oldfield The Nice Pink Floyd Renaissance Rush Van der Graaf Generator Yes
Not seeing Transatlantic there
Actually for the next thread I'll compile a list of essential prog (new and old) and a few albums from each
Automatic Fine Tuning Camel Caravan Emerson, Lake & Palmer Family Genesis Gentle Giant Jethro Tull King Crimson Mike Oldfield The Nice Pink Floyd Renaissance Rush Van der Graaf Generator Yes
Your lack of Karnivool disturbs me. [editline]6th June 2011[/editline] Oh god I've never even heard of Renaissance and Automatic Fine Tuning. How badly have I been missing out?
Not seeing Transatlantic there
that's because I've never listened to them, I should have mentioned that that was just a starting point
Oh god I've never even heard of Renaissance and Automatic Fine Tuning. How badly have I been missing out?
not too badly. Renaissance are alright but they're probably the worst band on that list, and Automatic Fine Tuning are cool but only have one album
Quickly threw together a preliminary list with some essential albums: ------ Progressive Rock: Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall Rush: 2112, Moving Pictures, Hemispheres Yes: Fragile, Relayer, Close To The Edge Camel: Mirage, The Snow Goose, Moonmadness Genesis: Nursery Cryme, Selling England By The Pound, Foxtrot King Crimson: In The Court Of The Crimson King, Lark's Tongues In Aspic, Red Jethro Tull: Aqualung, Thick As A Brick, A Passion Play Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Tarkus, Brain Salad Surgery Mike Oldfield: Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn Frank Zappa/Mothers Of Invention: Hot Rats, Apostrophe, Joe's Garage Caravan: In The Land Of Grey And Pink Asia: Asia, Alpha, Astra Roger Waters: The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking David Gilmour: On An Island Progressive Metal: Opeth: Still Life, Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries Dream Theater: Images And Words, Scenes From A Memory, Octavarium Porcupine Tree: In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear Of A Blank Planet Edge Of Sanity: Crimson, Crimson II Atheist: Unquestionable Presence, Jupiter Tool: Ænima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days Queensrÿche: Operation: Mindcrime Honourable Mentions For Progressive Elements: Iron Maiden: Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, Brave New World, The Final Frontier Fates Warning: Awaken The Guardian ------ Obviously this is by no means complete, this is what I can recommend from my listening experience
Prog Metal section needs more Symphony X
Sure thing what albums do you suggest (if you had to pick three)?
The Divine Wings Of Tragedy, The Odyssey & V: The New Mythology
I think The Lamb should replace Nursery Cryme on the Genesis section, and Minstrel in the Gallery instead of A Passion Play for Tull.
Prog Rock section needs more Spock's Beard. The Light, V, and Snow Also Transatlantic SMPT:e, Bridge Across Forever and The Whirlwind
I think The Lamb should replace Nursery Cryme on the Genesis section, and Minstrel in the Gallery instead of A Passion Play for Tull.
I think A Passion Play is better "accessible" Tull. I also think Lamb should be there, but Nursery Cryme is also a landmark album... I'd also suggest Going For The One instead of Relayer for Yes. Relayer's a little out there on the first couple of listens.
A small "New Prog" mention would be cool too, Mew, Coheed, Mars Volta, etc
Your lack of Karnivool disturbs me. [editline]6th June 2011[/editline] Oh god I've never even heard of Renaissance and Automatic Fine Tuning.
Obviously this is by no means complete, this is what I can recommend from my listening experience
coheed and cambria!

There's already some Zappa on there. And would you really consider any of those bands essential listens for someone first getting into prog?
