There's already some Zappa on there. And would you really consider any of those bands essential listens for someone first getting into prog?
Yes sir. You may not think it because they're obscure but I'd say in the underworld they're being liked a lot more than you think. :smugdog: Put em under the "People haven't heard of, but still good" list. [editline]7th June 2011[/editline] Magma, Atoll, Robert Wyatt, High Tide.
I just realised you missed out Atheist's best album, Elements.
Holy shit. Didn't know facepunch had a progressive music thread. I listen a lot to Rick Wakeman, and as you all are probably prog-lovers, I seriously recommend you all to listen to the No Earthly Connection album. I recently discovered it, and it's an absolute must for any fan. Very obscure, but very fascinating. Gave me eargasms several times. Then there's a couple of bands which I haven't seen mentioned (in the latest pages). -Black Bonzo -Flower Kings -The Tangent -Unitopia -Samla Mammas Manna (Very whacky, listen to them on spotify, it's excellent 70ies prog) -Rare Bird (have the best lyrics) -Triumvirat -Focus -Pain of Salvation -Ayreon (Prog-metal at its finest) Anyone who listen to these? :P
Ayreon should also be mentioned. I thought The Human Equation was a very good album, a seminal metal opera. It was interesting to hear James LaBrie and Mikael Akerfeldt on the same album, but I wish they had utilized Akerfeldt's growls a little bit more.
So good. :crying:
Even better. :fappery:
Ayreon should also be mentioned. Mike's screams in Day 12 are awesome. Namely, "YOU'RE BETTER OFF DEAD" and "YOUR WAYS CAN NOT BE JUS-TI-FIED". Devin Townsend was also fucking awesome on that.
I listened to a compilation by porcupine tree the other day, they seemed okay
I listened to a compilation by porcupine tree the other day, they seemed okay
You may enjoy that Stupid Dream album.
In Absentia is still my favorite PT album
In Absentia is still my favorite PT album
Yeah, In Absentia is like their "In The Court of the Crimson King".
Well what luck, that's the only thing I have by then except Stars Die Will listen to later
In Absentia is still my favorite PT album
Me too, In Absentia or Deadwing are in a bit of a tie. In Absentia is just, amazingly awesome in every way. But Deadwing has a couple of songs that hold personal significance for me, and it's just got that sense of melancholy to it that makes me melt completely.

The Incident is PT's opus even though I personally don't like it as much. But it is a 55 minute song so it does have to be recognised as something really, really special. Also Signify was really, really good as well. There's just no way of measuring one PT album over the other. Speaking of Wilson I'm thinking of making a Steve Wilson thread. There's a lot of stuff about him to go round. What say you guys?
Damn, didn't realise Steve Wilson was in his 40s. Thought he was early 30s or something. :psyduck:
Damn, didn't realise Steve Wilson was in his 40s. Thought he was early 30s or something. :psyduck:
He was born in 1967, the year of Sgt Pepper and thinks it was significant to his career drafting thread now
Damn, didn't realise Steve Wilson was in his 40s. Thought he was early 30s or something. :psyduck:
I had a nightmare the other night where he died. That is going to be one of the saddest days in my life. He's my biggest idol. Speaking of Steve, the fact that he recently remixed it introduced me to the genius that is In The Land of Grey and Pink. I love Love to Love You DAT COWBELL
Screw it, this Steve Wilson guy's portfolio is endless. Gonna take me quite a LONG while to get through it. He's kinda like Robert Fripp in a way. Except from that he can sing quite well.
Are Gojira proggy enough to qualify for the list? If they are the I think From Mars to Sirius deserves to be added.

Never done an OP before, hope you guys like it but its going to be fucking huge
I may start with his ambient drone stuff.

I'd suggest getting some Bass Communion and IEM if you're into that sort of experimental stuff, as well as Insurgentes. Blackfield's awesome aswell, shows his more pop/art rock side. I've been meaning to get more into No-Man, I've only heard one of their albums. You could not possibly understand the infinite knowledge within them!"
Yeah, looks like I'm a bit late on the realisation. Should have posted a thread long ago. :v:
Yeah, looks like I'm a bit late on the realisation. Should have posted a thread long ago. :v:
He was pretty much my prog-birth. When I say I listened to him for 2 years, for one year I actually literally didn't listen to anything else. It was really really sad but also sooo worth it. Get Ghosts on Magnetic Tape.

I listened to PT on and off when I first discovered them in 06, but then I realised how ridiculously amazing they were and listened to absolutely nothing else for ages. Ghosts on Magnetic Tape is such an amazing album. I hated experimental music until I heard Bass Communion.

You'll like to look into depth with Fripp's work too, he's not just King Crimson. He's the creator. :smug:
