Does that mean I'm going to be disappointed later then? All I've listened to are Stupid Dream and In Absentia so far.
Listen and absorb rather than going with someone who thinks one of them is "boring".
Does that mean I'm going to be disappointed later then? All I've listened to are Stupid Dream and In Absentia so far.
By no means! Most Porcupine Tree albums have a different identity, a different feel for each one. In Absentia has great songwriting, Signify is a great example of modern prog, and so on. It's just mostly agreed among fans that Stupid Dream and In Absentia (and maybe Deadwing but ehhh) are the fan favourites. Whichever album is the best one though, is for you, the listener to decide.
I suppose I wasn't thinking very clearly when I posted that. Fear of a Blank Planet is one of my favorite songs by them and it's not on either, so perhaps I should just listen to other albums without getting an opinion on what's good and what isn't.
Listen and absorb rather than going with someone who thinks one of them is "boring".
None of their albums are boring though. The ones where "not much happens" (The Sky Moves Sideways, Up The Downstair) are actually some of the most interesting. The soundscapes they make are really beautiful. And some of the psychadelic stuff is awesome.

I go on hols for a few days and you're all talking Steve Wilson and I'm not even here for it. Stupid Dream and In Absentia are good, but the best album experience by PT so far has definitely been Fear of a Blank Planet. In Absentia and Stupid Dream are great albums in the way that a collection of songs together is an album, and all these songs on the album are good (though some of the songs on both Stupid Dream and In Absentia are a bit hit and miss), but Fear of a Blank Planet is one of the most solid concept albums I've ever listened to. The earlier stuff had lyrics written by Alan Duffy so it's remarkably different to the more recent catalogue, but you can get a lot of it if you just get the Stars Die: Delerium years compilation. Also, if you can find the Staircase Infinities EP, it's really worth getting. I don't think it really matters what you listen to first, PT has so many genres incorporated into it that I would suggest you start with what you're most familiar with. If you're into heavier stuff, go Deadwing, lighter alt. rock stuff Stupid Dream, Triphop and Psychedelia would be Signify. I started with Stupid Dream, went on to In Absentia, Deadwing, then went back and listened to Sky Moves Sideways, Voyage 34 and Signify before Fear of a Blank Planet was released, then kept up with their releases. But it doesn't really matter. In terms of buying the CDs, make sure you buy the deluxe edition 2cd sets because that's where the quality lies. Also for Steve Wilson's solo stuff, get it, don't puss out and not get it, start with Insurgentes and Bass Communion's Ghosts on Magnetic Tape, and get Grace for Drowning when it comes out because you'd have to be stupid not to. Kinda wish the megathread I made was still alive :(
Someone should revive it seeing as Grace for Drowning is being released soon, then! :buddy:
I'm calling album of the year on Grace for Drowning, even though it's not released yet. That shit is going to be mind blowingly good.
New Dream Theater album was released today :D
New Dream Theater album was released today :D
Does it still live up to DT standards without Portnoy?
If ya guys want some awesome prog, check out Opeth's new album. It' really awesome!
The Incident is the closest in my opinion. Its not really that bad, but REALLY boring.
You kiddin' bro? The Incident is one of my favourite PT albums, up there with Fear of a Blank Planet. That may be because I'm really a sucker for semi-continous concept albums like those, but it's certainly not boring. I've listened to the first CD straight through, doing nothing else, just staring at the visualizer and it was amazing, certainly the way it was ment to be listened to. I just ordered the 2CD digi-book versions of Insurgentes and Grace for Drowning. I have to say I have never been as excited for a musical release as I am for Grace for Drowning. It's going to be so good.
It's really bizarre going from Even Less to Blackest Eyes considering how stylistically different they are. In Absentia and Stupid Dream are like my personal, musical yin yang. I hope Deadwing throws me a curve ball and I love it even more.
Do you guys like turntable.fm? I'm in a prog room. Let's get it goin! http://turntable.fm/prog19

The Incident is one of my least favourite though, I think that Time Flies is one of their best songs, but in all honesty a lot of it just doesn't hit me in the same way that FOABP did. Its not a bad album (Black Dahlia is a fantastic song) but there wasn't as much 'atmosphere' as there was in other albums Also Deadwing is just so fucking good Also picked up a copy of KC's Discipline the other day, was AMAZED because this shit is so hard to find in Australia. This has become a rare cd.
I've pre-ordered the super limited $100 special edition. That's right, I spent $100 on an album. THAT'S HOW EXCITED I AM FOR THIS.
Does it still live up to DT standards without Portnoy?
Surprisingly (to me anyway) yes. It's far better than their last 3 albums if you ask me. Sounds like a not-as-good and more metal version of Images and Words. Very prog, very melodic, but still very metal. The more I listen to it the more I like it.

Each to their own. Deadwing gets really mindblowingly awesome from Arriving Somewhere and onwards, but I don't find the first half as good as their other stuff. I would've loved to get the deluxe edition of Grace for Drowning for the 120 page book thing, but I'm not that comfortably off.

Such a pity :(. Time Flies I like because it reminds me of older, more Deadwing styled stuff. I don't know why, but I never got into the Incident. Blind House is kind of good, but a bit dull. I Drive the Hearse is great, and Drawing the Line has a good verse. Yellow Windows of the Evening Train is one of my favourites, despite the fact its just a vinyl scratching and a bit of a tune behind it. I mean it's a great album and a solid concept album, but overall I prefer FOABP. John Wesley vocals! Chris Maitland's drumming was fantastic. No Gavin Harrison, but it did give PT a really nice nostalgic feel to it that's a bit more psychedlic and not something that has ever happened with Gavin at the sticks. Not that Gavin's drumming isn't phenomenal, but I kind of wish Chris had a bit of a longer tenure.
YES! Me and my mates have organised to go on a road trip to Melbourne in December to see Opeth. THIS IS GOING TO BE AMAZING.
YES! Me and my mates have organised to go on a road trip to Melbourne in December to see Opeth. THIS IS GOING TO BE AMAZING.
Do you know how much Opeth tickets usually go for? I'd love to go see them when the come to Sydney.
Do you know how much Opeth tickets usually go for? I'd love to go see them when the come to Sydney.
I'm guessing you'd be looking at $60-80, judging by how much I payed for DT a couple years back, but it could well be less.
That's ok, I payed $150 for a Metallica show last November.
I am so psyched to hear Heritage, should be arriving Monday or Tuesday. I didn't want to spoil the experience by downloading/streaming it.
I pre-ordered it, but I haven't got any kind of postal confirmation yet... This makes me sad. [editline]15th September 2011[/editline] Oh wait, the 14th is the Japanese release date. We Aussies get it on the 16th...
I'm guessing you'd be looking at $60-80, judging by how much I payed for DT a couple years back, but it could well be less.
I dunno how miserably jacked up the prices are for concerts in Australia or not, but I know that I paid about $50 US to see them not too long ago.
Heritage is awesome. I don't miss the growls at all.
So, whats you guys opinion on atom heart mother (song)? I really enjoyed it but even as a big pink Floyd fan it can be boring at times.
it can be boring at times.
It's experimental, get over it.
It's not boring, it's atmospheric.
