Progressive Rock - Psychadelic Galaxies in 7/4 Time

Yeah but you can't just say it's "trying new things". Everyone tried new things.
Too confusing.
Also, Nightwish new album released.
I know there's a bit of a stigma attached to Nightwish, and I am probably wrong in terming them prog metal but they really do have quite a few prog elements.
You're an idiot if you pass aside this album on the basis that its Nightwish because its fucking awesome, its really fast-paced but contains a load of different genres, bit of gypsy, bit of jazz, bit of metal, etc. It is honestly their best album to date
To top it off its a concept album about a composer on his deathbed, telling the story of his life and thats a great idea for a concept album
You may not understand what I said, but at least I wasn't vague.
If you'd like an extension on my definition, it's mostly about the way the music moves. It's very different to others in its structure and concept. It's slightly refining the term "Art Rock".
"Trying something new" is not a root of a genre of music.
Extending my definition, progressive rock is something that tries to push the boundaries of rock music by introducing something new/unusual to the genre, i.e. tries to do something new.
And I think trying something new can be a root for the genre because prog doesn't really have any "rules" like other genres. Prog isn't as much about what the music does, but what it doesn't do, which is follow rules. If you take a standard rock song and start breaking the rules of the genre, it basically becomes a prog song. The breaking of rules most often just happens to be messing with the 4/4 time, breaking the structure by adding bridges/interludes and adding unusual instruments (to the genre), like sax or violin, but really you can do anything you can imagine with the song to make it prog. This is just how I feel, though, and I'm no music doctor, feel free to disagree.
Also, I can't stand Nightwish, even less so after Turunen left. It's way too dramatic for me.
Mmm, a definition of such a genre shouldn't be so detailed otherwise it confuses me.
It's loose like Art Rock, but there are ways to identify it, as you say "experimental time signatures" and long sections.
But saying adding "unusual instruments" is wrong. How is a saxophone or a violin, unusual?
Pet Sounds used unusual sounds, but it didn't define a genre of its own because of it. It just inspired others to create new expressive techniques.

No, you can, and they don't.
Of course I'm not saying every band that does one thing slightly different from someone else is progressive. I refuse to believe you can't make up the definition for when something becomes a progressive piece of music by yourself
Hip Hop would be the most diverse based on the adaption of styles.
I don't really look at "how" it sounds, but by the way it moves alone.
How else would someone distinguish between art rock and prog rock?

I'm sure you're making a point, but I haven't got a fucking clue what it is.
Explain what you're talking about in clear sentences and I will respond in kind. Until then all you've shown me is a rock instrumental with synths and a rock song which uses classical harmony and lots of time sig changes.
I fail to see how you could even define the Bowie track as art rock unless you're looking at the context of the album

You don't listen to much Bowie.

Trust me, give that Low album a listen. It's awesome.
Don't quote out of context. That song you posted isn't art rock. Bowie is.

The Low album is probably the most art rock he's ever been. Explain why you don't think it is.

It wasn't a definition, I just listed some ways you can break the rules of rock music. My point was that you can do anything possible with a prog song, but if you make a hard rock song in 7/8 or divide it with a 7min flute solo, it ceases to be a hard rock song. And I said violin and sax are unusual instruments in rock music. I don't think they're unusual, per se.
Oh god, I practically spend my time spamming f5 on the Steven Wilson HQ site, I just want to know the rest of the tour dates and see whether or not he's comming here. ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS STEVEN WILSON.
True. My point was mainly that it isn't the only diverse genre there.
True. My point was mainly that it isn't the only diverse genre there.
Sure isn't. I was just trying to disprove the whole "prog can't be progressive" thing. Everyone (me included) seems to have forgotten why we're having this argument in the first place, though :v:.

Song =/= album
Song =/= album
so there are no lone songs that can be called art rock. okay.
Are you serious.
That song. To me. Is not art rock.
The album as a whole may be, but songs are not above individual categorisation.
How is this so difficult.

Okay, you're just not being specific. If you feel it isn't then fine, relax.

No biggie.
Let's just all be friends.
No, grumpy we shall be.

Are you kidding? A saxophone or violin is unusual because until prog and psych, rock bands were pretty much a 3-4 piece set consisting of guitar, drum, bass and keyboard if lucky. Violins, sax, etc were associated with classical and jazz and that's why it was unusual.
Going to be honest here, I've kept mostly out of the argument so far but seriously I have no idea what point you are trying to make and I don't think anyone else really knows either. Seems to me you are getting off on cryptic statements that make little logical sense
My point was that psych/art rock started using unusual sounds. No need to confuse yourself by not reading.

I read every word and it was all pretty cryptic and difficult to understand what kind of argument you were trying to make
Never try to argue with Akayz.
Not because he is good at it, but because he is incredibly horrible at it.

No point having an arguement that has to have an end. :v:
It's rush day

It's also Frank Zappa's birthday
Listening to Fear of a Blank Planet makes me hate the world, which sounds horribly angsty but it's just such a pessimistic album
Might be going the Same gig as CoolCorky, This time with 100% less awkwardness
