I was actually just listening to Fragile. I'll try another go at ELP, for some odd reason they never clicked with me. I just could never get in to them. @AK'z, doesn't really matter. Anything that you'd recommend

I haven't listened to Trilogy yet, so we'll see how that one goes. Camel's Moonmadness is a very good album, as is Music inspired by the Snow Goose. You know what I find weird? There's not much mention of Procol Harum in this thread and seeing as Whiter Shade of Pale pretty much kickstarted prog, and they were the first band to release a prog suite, you'd think there'd be more. They were a very good band.
Also do you consider Dream Theater prog at all? I've always liked Mike Portnoy but I was never interested in Dream Theater. I'm listening to Images and Words now...bummer that they just went on without Mike this year. Poor guy, he seems like such a bro.
I do consider them prog

At times more metal than prog, but there's always been that distinct prog influence with the extended song structures and weird time signatures.
They've always been prog. I'm still..."out of the loop" on classifications when it comes to prog. Some things just sound..."proggy" and others are harder to classify.
its hard to classify what the first prog album was really Im putting my money on Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack by the Nice because wikipedia says so
Anyone here heard of Rishloo? I just discovered them and they are pretty damn good. Excuse the Rock Band video, but it's the only one I could find of both these songs strung together.
i heard eidolon a long time ago, it was decent. should probably try listening to it again eventually.
i heard eidolon a long time ago, it was decent. should probably try listening to it again eventually.
I haven't heard Eidolon, but I just listened to Feathergun and thought it was pretty awesome.

oh yeah, thats right, forgot that one
Crazy World of Arthur Brown tends to be considered the first if I remember correctly
Nah, that's a lot more psych rock. But it's still a big influence. This was a full year before In the Court.
Crazy World of Arthur Brown tends to be considered the first if I remember correctly
I'd say it's probably the best "proto-prog" album.
Nah, that's a lot more psych rock. But it's still a big influence. This was a full year before In the Court.
So was that
I give up, there is no first prog album.
So, I've listened very extensively to the "big three" Porcupine Tree albums (Stupid Dream, In Absentia, and Deadwing), in addition to Fear of a Blank Planet. Where should I go from here? I was thinking Lightbulb Sun but I've never even heard it mentioned, and it's supposedly a bit of a poppy album. I think I had The Sky Moves Sideways, but I don't know what happened to it.

Also, if you liked FoaBP, check out the Nil Recurring EP they did with it, it's awesome.

I really like dream theater idk when I never gave them a chance.

There are some GREAT songs that I love on there, like Russia on Ice, Buying New Soul and Feel So Low, but some of the other tracks I thought were really weak. Was never able to get into it. Try Signify, its definitely the most prog-influenced of Porcupine Tree's releases, and if you want something that sounds like Pink Floyd, go for Sky Moves Sideways or Up the Downstairs. If you want something a bit more electronic and metal-influenced, go The Incident. Also yeah, Nil Recurring is an interesting release to look at. Barring all that, I really suggest you go get some Blackfield if you liked the poppy stuff of Porcupine Tree - one of Steve Wilson's side projects, though he recently announced his departure from it. Blackfield live in NYC is a good place to start as it gives a really good overview of the first two albums and is fantastic to boot. Also definitely try out the solo albums Grace for Drowning and Insurgentes if you haven't already. Also if anyone here likes early Porcupine Tree, particularly stuff like Voyage 34 and Sky Moves Sideways, try out some Jansen Barbieri Karn. Once you listen to them, you understand the true influence behind early PT.

I'll give The Sky Moves Sideways a go now, and then the incident. How's their really early stuff?
I really like Shesmovedon and How Is Your Life Today? but I agree it's far from their best album. It's definitely an in between album for them
I actually enjoy those songs too, so maybe its an album that had good songs on it, but it just felt incoherent. The music was good but the sound was pretty unremarkable and it didnt have a theme to hold it together
Yeah, it doesn't have a really definitive personality. It's one of those albums which is never really acknowledged. To be fair a lot bands with a long roster of albums have ones like that I guess. I wouldn't say it's bad though
