Progressive Rock - Psychadelic Galaxies in 7/4 Time

He is right yeah
I think bands that try to recreate old eras of music aren't very good, but bands that manipulate the older styles and make something new and interesting out of them are much better
I think it comes down to what you think progressive music actually is.
I'm actually really confused by that, because I'm sure I've read somewhere that Steven Wilson really likes Spock's Beard and Neal Morse, so it seems odd that he would rag against Transatlantic.
I don't know, generally I agree with him, I don't think a classic prog band is really all that ambitious and special anymore, it's been done, but it's not as if they're pretending to be anything incredibly special, just enjoying themselves or whatever
Also considering Grace for Drowning was basically his attempt to replicate King Crimson it's probably a bit hypocritical, but I suppose I can't rag on him for that because he said this way back in 2005, it's been like 7 years

And this is why I find it very very strange that he cited TFK and Transatlantic. They are both brilliant bands that use 70's prog as a starting point for some very original material.
I respect Steve more than pretty much anyone else on the planet, but that little rant he had about so called "neo-prog" came off as opinionated and incredibly pretentious.
Here's the link to the quote by the way: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=88744
I haven't listened to Transatlantic very extensively at all, but from what I've heard they sounded like the very opposite of original. They just sounded like a classic case of being "complex" for the sake of being complex. Also, it's pretty obvious they're even trying to replicate the sound of 70's prog bands, so in the end they just end up sounding like some lame prog tribute band.
If you look at how SW uses his prog gimmicks it's very, very subtle, most of the time you can't even point them out. He's not all like "look guys here's 9/8 time am i complex yet".
Kind of defeats the purpose of being "progressive" if you're not progressing anywhere, don't you think?
Then again, I have listened to probably 5 minutes of Transatlantic and I've never heard of Flower Kings, so what do I know.

I NEVER felt like Transatlantic were "complex" for the sake of complexity.
All of their songs felt smooth and well done for me.
Also, while they definitely are going for a 70's approach, its definitely not just that, they do throw their own stuff into the mix.

Transatlantic are in no way complex for the sake of complexity. Their songs are filled with catchy, poppy sections in 4/4. They took the foundation of 70's prog rock and added their own spin on it with a distinctly pop and funk sensibility.

This is what really gets me. I think that quote might be taken out of context, or it was just a moment of stupidity. Plus, it was seven years ago.
I'm seriously not inclined to believe everything I see on Progarchives, because they have both a HUGE prog elitism to the point where many of the members don't like SW purely because he has 'pop sensibilities'. Half of them refuse to like him because they believe the other half will buy his cds even if he 'pooped in a cd case' (actual quote). So yeah. I'm not gonna judge for it. Just thought it was interesting.

Well yeah, it was ages ago, and he's normally a pretty well mannered guy. Just seemed like a bit of a stupid thing to say.
And couldn't agree more about Progarchives. Bunch of elitist pricks.
I feel like if we rag on them too much someone will notice and they'll get super mad which I totally wouldn't mind, just awful opinions generally

Genesis Revisited II. Sounds really good, can't wait to hear this. Steven Wilson doing can utility and the coastliners, Mikael Akerfeldt doing Supper's Ready, a bunch of other guest artists, and some good songs as well. I'm gonna pick this up I think.
Apparently there's was a Prog Awards ceremony :v:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19492677
Award Winners:
New Blood: TesseracT
Live Event: Anathema
Grand Design: Pink Floyd's Immersion Reissues
Anthem: Squackett's A Life Within A Day
Album Of The Year: Rush's Clockwork Angels
Visionary: Peter Hammill
Lifetime Achievement: Genesis
Virtuoso: Carl Palmer
Guiding Light: Steven Wilson
Prog God: Rick Wakeman
Yeah, I voted on it, was really good.
I think most of the awards were definitely well deserved though I can't say Anathema getting the live event is particularly deserving - particularly because the Wall is up there, and Steven Wilson's magic band tour. Carl Palmer getting Virtuoso as well kinda irks me, there's no doubt he was but there are so many people in the prog scene who I think deserve it more.
To be honest, they have a lot of awards to catch up on so I think these awards will have potential a few years down the line when they're finished honouring the people who were never honoured.

Just got into Tool, this whole album is fucking amazing.
Oh man I'm going to see Rush in Chicago this Saturday. It will be the greatest moment of my life.
Wow, finally found this thread.
Been looking for it for a small while to post this:

Really fucking good band from Söderköping, a town south from my own.
Seen them three or four times and they always put on a good show, they really pump us, the crowd, up.
What Rush album is the best? I have never really been a huge fan of Rush but for some reason the local radio station has been playing a lot of their stuff recently and I think I might like it if I got into it. Only prog rock I'm really a fan of is Pink Floyd and King Crimson.

I haven't listened to much, but Moving Pictures if often considered their best.

I know this is old news already but I am so hyped for this album, and the second part next year! I'd have pre-ordered it already if all the editions weren't so expensive. They're probably all sold out by now anyway, bah.

Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings are my two favorite albums.
But I can say that Fly By Night, 2112, and Permanent Waves are also amazing.

Their masterpiece is Caress of Steel. Just in terms of music theory. Fountain of Lamneth is done in such a genius way, it tells the story of a man's life through sections. Each section or period of his life time is expressed through lyrics, composition, and atmosphere. When the song begins and he is born, you just can feel through the music that the character is hopeful for his upcoming life, and how the mountains that hold the sunrise captivate his wonder for life. Then through his teen years he is lost, confused, extremely conflicted, frustrated, and depressed. Again, you just feel the emotions of the character through which the music is played and written. Then his mid years in which he falls in love feel like happy and wistful, but regretful that he must continue his journey and leave her. And his 40's where he is old and tired, and yearns for something more in his life, but has little energy to do so. And then his final moments in which he finally reaches the fountain of lamenth, and learns the secret of life, but even more questions are created as he learns it. And then everything comes full circle as he dies and becomes reborn again using the same notes from the beginning of the song.
That and The Necromancer being an awesome song. Really underrated album.
So I decided to take a Friday night Porcupine Tree marathon:
Listened to Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet and now I'm just about to finish Nil Recurring. 4 hours with nothing but PT.
I'm going to finish it with We Lost The Skyline before I go to sleep.
Time Flies from The Incident is my favorite PT track right now. It's my ringtone.

I agree. 2112 is just amazing. It's the only Rush album where I genuinely love every song

If you don't mind really long songs (Which you probably don't since you already listen to King Crimson and Pink Floyd) go with 2112. Otherwise, try Moving pictures. The title track on 2112 has a bit of everything that Rush do, making it a really good entry point

By the way, which albums by Yes and Genesis would you guys recommend starting out with?

Gabriel era genesis - Selling England By The Pound (although you could really start with any except Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Don't listen to that first)
Collins era genesis - Pretty much any of them. Personally I like Genesis
Yes - Close to the Edge
For Genesis, either Selling England By The Pound or Foxtrot.
For Yes, Close To The Edge or Fragile.
