glam not prog glam not prog dont even care though because this thread is dead
actually it's "art rock" who gives a shit all genres in this thread are just manifestations anyway. :(
Seeing as the prog metal thread died, I guess I'll share this band I just found about here. They're called Syqem, they're from Germany and it's some of the best prog metal/djent/whatever you want to call it I've heard in a while.
New S.Wilson album leaked already, way before release. Preordering soon so I'm listening now and its really nice. Uplifting, instead of dark.
That must feel pretty fucking awesome knowing that you've grown up listening to The Dark Side of the Moon which was produced by Alan Parsons and have gone a long way since then to get your own album produced by Alan Parsons.
If Grace for Drowning was his King Crimson album, then this is definitely his Yes/Genesis/ELP album. There's so much influence taken from those bands for it that it's pretty much noticeable straight away. But it's nice. He's never really strayed into that territory before and this is definitely the most proggy release I've heard from him.
I had seen this video with Guthrie Govan on fretless guitar and I thought the sound was very interesting and it's amazing to actually hear it in action in Drive Home.
The Raven That Refused to Sing is now one of my favourite songs ever made. I don't think I like this album as much as Grace for Drowning, but it's still pretty brilliant. The Watchmaker is a fantastic song.
tbh, I knew from the moment details were announced that it wouldn't be as good as Grace. It's a pretty wanky record too, just a bunch of technical shit with incredibly quick solos and show off pieces. I can't help but like it though, I think its because while its incredibly wanky it's also got this great sense of fun, like they're having just a super good time in general. It's like the first really happy record I've heard from him. The Watchmaker is great, it's soooo Genesis though. start of the Watchmaker sounds like Entangled by Genesis as well. Then there's a bit at 6:00 which sounds like the melody from Anyway from Lamb.
I do think it's a bit hypocritical of Wilson to make music such as this since he has often dismissed bands like Dream Theater and the whole technical wankery side of prog.

I guess I'm the only person who liked it way more than Grace for Drowning
yeah but you like dream theatre and I don't that said I'm not saying its much worse than Grace. but I think Grace had more depth to it.
I don't really "feel" Grace. It just kind of comes and goes whenever I listen to it.
The thing I liked about Raven is that it actually feels like a solo album from Steven Wilson. Not once did I think, "hmmm well he could've done that with PT..."
Funny I got the exact opposite impression, Grace felt much more like a solo album to me whereas some songs off Raven like Drive Home felt straight out of the PT/Blackfield catalogue Not that that's a bad thing
Holy shit yes. Opeth Australian tour in March and for once they're actually coming to Adelaide. Plus I'm turning 18 on Monday so I'll actually be able to go regardless of if it's 18+ or not.
Hmm I could go to that but I probably won't, Swans are coming to Sydney and I've wasted enough money on tours
Just went to see these guys last night. Awesome band. Very eclectic styles. And there's a great humour to everything they do. If you think it's too straight metal at the start, stick with it.
I like the song but what the fuck? :v:

Who is actually a girl, not a guy
Just listened to King Crimson's "The ConstruKction of Life" album and it really was terrible to me. In my opinion, there earlier albums were much better. It was just so damn depressing metal sounding. I guess I just prefer their more jazz-like music.

[editline]17th February 2013[/editline] might listen to Thrak now actually, haven't in probably a year..
People is such a good song from that Also Walking on Air but I think my favourite is people, so funky I feel like Crimson would have had another critically lauded set of albums if Sylvian gave the ok to become lead singer so they could ditch Belew not that Belew is bad or anything I just feel that Fripp works best with a good partner and the Belew/Fripp combo was already tired at that point
to be fair fripp/sylvian were a great collab, albeit not really a "prog" collaboration but worth a listen:
yeah good album That said thrak wasn't particularly prog anyway nor was anything after the 80s so it would hardly have been a weird collab to do

Gonna try listening to the "Power to Believe", but I'm not too optimistic about it.
