Society is unstable enough as it is, if we cut funding to all of the things that relieve humanity's stress (that you listed in the OP) then we'd end up with a bunch of stressed out angry fuckers who are expected to start the new society in space. To put it in simple terms: This would be bad.

They do the math, and design the thing, and then labourers put it together. Even the labourers need a university degree just to rivet some aluminium sheeting together!
And one final point: 2012 'is bullshit'. We ain't going to die ON the 21/12/2012. But, i'm damn sure we won't be around by mid 2013. Why? Because look around! Our atmosphere is fucked, our oceans are fucked, the earth is cracking up LITERALLY! Then theres an asteroid heading our way, and a whole host of other 'bullshit theories', but at LEAST one will turn out true. Whether it be 'the day after tomorrow', or 'armageddon', a war, or an asteroid, or it really does turn out like 2012, something is bound to happen. And it's happening soon.

This is the other guy with a valid point.
While we can get to space, it takes a month JUST to get to the freakin moon!
It takes a year, more or less, to get to mars. And then we'd need the mars colony to establish itself, and that takes many supplies etc.
So yeah, we need to advance technologically to go forward... [b]But if we all worked together on it, wouldn't we have something good by now?[/b]

christianity didn't cause the dark ages, christianity helped us survive the dark ages
the dark ages followed the collapse of an empire, christianity is what preserved at least some of the older civilization (even though by inaction they also caused some texts to be lost). christianity unified europe more than anything else could. christianity established an education system far superior to anything that had been seen in ancient rome - and was further surpassed by universities, which were initially supported by the church
there was no scientific research done during the dark ages because the fundamental idea of science - being able to verify and test results, forming models based on rigorous experimentation - only emerged later. philosophy however was practiced by educated priests. art was largely funded by the church.
though censorship was practiced and some ideas were simply not allowed, a lot of heretic literature was spared because its value was understood. for example metamorphoses was copied a lot, even though it was all about false gods, with the excuse that it contained good stories and you'd just have to interpret it metaphorically
i understand it if you have something against christianity because of all its bullshit, but in your zealous anti-christianity make sure not to just spread your own bullshit
