I'm in Year 12 next year and I'm curious about the HSC marking things, one is the examination and one is for an "assessment" for each subject. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is the "assessment" a certain assignment you do within Year 12? For example, is the Major Project in Multimedia the "assessment"?
Also, is Mathematics an absolute necessity for business and SDD? My Mathematics marks aren't going well at the moment, and I'm considering dropping to general if it gives me a higher band and a better ATAR. That's not to say that I am still trying hard to improve my marks in Mathematics, but just in case.
You do assessment tasks throughout the year, these can be take-home assignments, in class essays, exams, etc. Each assessment task is given a weighting (as a percentage), and you'll have about ~5 per subject for the course, adding up to make 100% of your final assessment mark. Major projects would just be higher weighted assessment tasks.
I started the HSC year with advanced maths and software, eventually dropped to general and still got myself a band 6 in both. If you're struggling with advanced maths, it'll be much wiser to drop to general and just make sure you do very well in it.
Yeah I was thinking of dropping to general, for not only does it help your ATAR if you do far better in it but a band 6 in General looks more attractive than a band 4 in the higher course, as my principal also said to me. The first part makes sense now, because I remember my report I handed in for Engineering Studies (I'm still thinking of whether to drop it or not, considering it is my worst subject aside from Maths) had a weight of 15% in the total course.
What are the different year 12 math subjects in NSW? We have general, methods and specialist. Most places require methods for entry, and the ones that don't have required ATARs that are pretty low anyhow.
At my school (NSW) there is General Mathematics, Applied Mathematics (non-ATAR) and just Mathematics (the highest course, as well as extension 1 and extension 2). I think Applied is alot like your Methods course.

Our general is seems equivalent to your general
Methods sounds like your 'Mathematics', involving differential and integral calculus and trig
Our specialist sounds a bit like your extensions
