I expected the Red Forest to be a whole lot less radioactive than the area around Chernobyl itself.

Red Forest got a lot of the rads from the intital explosion.

Since its also a large area of vegetation it has held onto the radiation.

Christ, nobody eat the radioactive fruit please. :tinfoil:
I was planning to go there next year with a friend, but I hear they're closing it down for maintenance in the sarcophagus or something like that.
At least my parents are happy for it, but damn. Does anyone know when we can expect it to open again?
Maintenance?
They are building a new shelter over it, so they can deconstruct the reactor and start making the area a bit safer.

I dunno if they plan on deconstructing the reactor but they do plan on cleaning up the debris and deconstruct the old sarcophagus as well.

Was thinking of booking a package trip there. £500pp.

The entire point of the NSC having robotic cranes is so they can completely disassemble the sarcophagus, the reactor, the reactor building and sort out all the radioactive material ready for shipping to the nearby containment facility.

Umm I know why it has the damn cranes. I said I wasn't sure if they planned on deconstruction the actual reactor because it isn't explicitly mentioned in that wiki article(that I saw). However since it would fall under the category of "debris" I guess it goes without saying it would be dealt with. I also suppose when people say "reactor" they are talking about the whole building and not just the part where the fuel rods were.
That said, I just watched a video detailing the construction of the NSC and in it they mentioned the deconstruction of the reactor so now I know for sure.
Chernobyl - one of the only places on Earth where Geiger-Müller counters don't tick - they scream.
to me the ticking of a geiger counter has always been the sound of death, it's like something evil is haunting the area
it's so damn eerie

You can get there cheaper if you know the right people. I plan on going with my experienced Latvian friend, he's literally been everywhere in Europe.
Gotta get all the pictures.
You want.... ALL the pictures?
please be considerate and leave some pictures for the next person.
Anyway, I would definitely want to go to Chernobyl some day, once i'm older and not as many people depend on me.
Radiation is nasty stuff you know.

I wouldn't be too scared about radiation unless you go somewhere you shouldn't or stay there too long it's perfectly fine. It looks like a lot of fun actually, using a geiger counter to find fragments of fuel rods and stuff.
I really want to visit the duga-3 array
Do you guys know what detector the camera person was using in the videos? It's just out of curiosity.

it's the gamma scout alert but it's not worth the price. The Int. Medcom CRM 100 is similarly functioned unit that costs only 300, and uses the same LND-712 Geiger Muller tube. Both can detect alpha through the thin mica window. I own the CRM 100 and it's very good. It has a battery lifetime of at least a month (I haven't replaced my battery for 2+ months and I use it daily).
The PRM-8000 is even better, as well as the Inspector Alert, which has a large pancake probe that is infinitely more sensitive. Those cost upwards of 500 dollars though.
If you want to be cheap, the Soeks 01M is even more sensitive to gamma radiation than the gamma scout (ironically) because it uses the SBM-20 tube. It's about 155 bucks, and for its price is great for a starter counter, or for visiting chernobyl. I used to have one but it broke, you just need to be very careful. newer versions are better I hear however. I've never had any issues with electromagnetic interference with either the CRM or Soeks, even near phones.
Even cheaper is a dosimeter, old civil defense pen dosimeters can give you a very rough estimate of how much dose you received on your trip, which is likely very low. You'll want to buy a mili-roentgen level one, any higher and it's useless for most applications. It has its faults but for 45 bucks it's a nice buy.
Are they planning on having the second sarcophagus done by 2014?
What an amazing place. Anybody ever heard about accounts of people seeing a giant black "bird" flying over the reactor when the fire started?

Did some research on that and yeah sleep ain't necessary.
