Honestly if sony just gave up on the idea of paying to play online it would have been the best console imo.
That's the problem there, I mean ps3 is still free from that baloney why can't the ps4 be like that.

I'd imagine it's because of the cost running the servers that hosts the games.
Doesn't the devs have to pay instead on the PS3 to use online? I think I've heard that a long time ago, can be wrong though. But the money has to come from somewhere. Console purchases is not a reliable income as it varies from month to month while subscriptions are more stable. Of course, that also varies but not as much as the purchases.
And sure, for this reason having a subscription fee for Live is also reasonable in my opinion. But from what I know, PS+ offers way more than Live.
