Corruption in Gaming Journalism Discussion V2 - Back from the dead!
what is with hipsters misuing the word "gross"? You're a "journalist" and that's the most fitting word you could find?
I said this before, but they're still stuck in that child-preteen mentality. Hence why whenever put under serious pressure, one of their tricks was always to just fall back to responding to everything with "Butts" or "Farts" like they're five.
"gross" and "yucky" are just words people use when they can't actually explain why shit is reprehensible to them

There's still a slight chance they handled it properly. Maybe.
Knowing them it's probably overly broad again though...

While he did have a bit of a point to make, it was worded in a way that made it into nonsense.
It was intended to focus on mechanics becoming easily tied to demographics of male and female players. While simultaneously ignoring that it's more about mechanics depth that affects the playerbase: a deep game like Starcraft has a demographic of hardcore players and a simpler game like Bejeweled can appeal to a broader demographic. The only reason gender even came into the equation is society bombarding gender roles on people as they make decisions on what entertainment to consume. Which isn't really anything a game developer or player has any real control over, that's a marketing thing.
Also using Portal as an example of an FPS was woefully misinformed. Portal isn't an FPS as one would typically imagine, it never was and never will be. First and foremost, Portal is a puzzle game that happens to be presented in first person. While it literally does have shooting the portal gun in first-person, it's not an action FPS. The game is much more about puzzle solving than it is about standard skillsets you'd expect from an action FPS like twitch aim, tracking, and leading targets.
Can't comment on it till I see it ,not like they really matter at the end of the day they will have just been another nobody taking a Shit on gaming for views and publicity.

I feel like they just discredited their own argument in that video. They say "We regularly hear designers talk about mechanics as if certain mechanics were only viable for specific genders." in the first fucking minute of the video, and then in the same minute they say they see counter-examples "all the time." All the time. "I could go off for a long time listing exceptions for these silly rules..." Geezus, where is your argument again?
Something like FPS's being made for a specific demographic isn't shocking or new but then it's the same thing as Michael Bay making movies for a specific demographic, and the crossover those two seem to have: guys who like guns, robots, and explosions. Does that mean no female players play FPS's? Of course not. We know that. Does that mean we have to design FPS's to appeal to more female players? No. You totally can, but there shouldn't be a gun to peoples head about it. This conversation has been had before, it's retarded every time.
the video in question, but now your unable to give view money for stupidity

Did they honestly call Portal a first person shooter?Have they ever played the game?Have they even heard of it till now?

That was surprisingly non-terrible except for lumping Portal together with CoD and a very mediocre game proposal in the latter half.

"It's an unspoken rule that we see counter-examples to all the time."
Gee, it's almost as if it's not a rule at all.
I don't understand why they would remove that.
Is it some sort of denial violence is perpetrated against women?
I hope we don't actually have to see cencorship akin to comic books or we will actually see the third crash of the gaming industry.
Because the practice is largely perpetrated in Hindu and Isalmic regions and the publishers did not want any of that issue surrounding their game.

Action games are aimed towards men because men are more likely to play it than women.
Just because we're treating everyone equally doesn't stop the fact that there are differences between sexes.

the game he described is literally This War of Mine with zombies
Someone managed to dig up an archive of the very first GamerGate thread on /v/ (fullchan's /v/, of course). An interesting bit of history.

Those dates. Those post numbers.

I'm suddenly reminded of those anime robot girls who have machine cannons for their nipples and breasts.
Interesting video. While there is usually a good amount of overlap, a female is more likely than a male to be a casual gamer. What he claims people see as "girl games" are really just "casual games. What would a "female" FPS look like? The closest I can think of is Splatoon.
The mechanics don't carry gender (Bratz vidya aside). The mechanics are just sorted into "casual" or "hardcore".
While there is usually a good amount of overlap, a female is more likely than a male to be a casual gamer. What he claims people see as "girl games" are really just "casual games.
This is the problem with people like him, they see gender issues everywhere.
Their logic is that "Most hardcore gamers are males, therefore hardcore games are targeted to males".
No, hardcore games are targeted to hardcore gamers. Gender has no relevance here.
It depends what you want to classify as gaming. If playing P2W retro style 'knockoff that's just different enough to avoid a lawsuit' phone games are considered gaming, then a huge number of people could be counted. But if we're only talking about 'core' gamers who play more competitively, yeah you don't find many women there because they're less likely to be interested in that style of play. Then of course there's everything in between that.
And they've got two of them! Who's disadvantageous now?
Plus they have a mechanic where they can spawn allies and armies out of a slot, it's so overpowered.

RoboGeisha is live-action though.
Seems to be some kind of Japanese spin on splatter films in general.
