https://archive.today/uPzzO polygon has gone full retard edit: why the fuck is it double posting again, did i break something

a mental Rolodex of games anyone can play. So far, I'm up to two-ish: Journey and Gone Home. Journey requires an expensive console to play at all, while Gone Home needs a relatively powerful computer. Sometimes I'll suggest Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons or Telltale's The Walking Dead, but even those two, while often chided for not being "real games," aren't easy for people with disabilities to finish.
No stanley parable no minecraft no pokémon no rpgs no theme park simulators no chess 2 no ftl no Diablo that even a quadraplegic plays no solitaire no spacechem no mass effect 3 with only the cutscenes gone home and walking dead only, final destination.
polygon seems to think that kids don't play video games and won't grow up having played video games and become the population that knows how to play video games in the future. sure, right now video games aren't completely accessible to those who have never played games, but the number of people who fit into that category will start to rapidly go down as time goes on [editline]10th February 2015[/editline] sucks that people with disabilities have a difficult time playing games, and there need to be more accessibility options (colorblind mode, subtitles, UI size sliders, etc.) sadly, games are difficult to make completely accessible to those with disabilities because there is a certain level of input required. maybe in the future when we have better capabilities with directly controlling things with our mind, that will go away, but it is just a restriction of technology now unless we were to force games to conform to a very specific set of design choices to make it absolutely accessible
I think the issue with video games is that they are games. Some of them are going to be accessible for most people, some of them aren't- much like toys. Games like The Walking Dead and- yes, maybe even Gone Home- are amazing, but that doesn't mean that we have to change all games to be like them. In case you haven't noticed, everyone trying to make their game like one thing has a tendency to make a lot of shitty games, and that's going to happen no matter how good the original game is. Everyone's going to want something different from games, and some of them are going to accessible by their nature. If you're playing a game where you're walking around with no time limit and no concern for obstacles or enemies, you're going to be fine. But video games aren't exactly parking spaces- they're complex things, and making every game totally accessible to anybody who's playing it would essentially turn it into a subtitled audiobook with Braille. I think accessibility is important- I always find it suspicious if a game doesn't have any difficulty settings- but you're never going to be able to please everyone, because everybody's looking for something different.
We want console exclusives. We want long games. We want games that are challenging. That locks out everyone without the money, the time and the technical ability to play. It's no wonder we've found ourselves here. Do we want more gamers, or do we want to be happy being inside a small community of fans who are willing to put the time and money into learning how to play, and maintaining the equipment needed to do so? There are already plenty of organizations and even game designers dedicated to fixing this problem. AbleGamers in the U.S. and Special Effect in the U.K. help people find games that anyone can play, or find the tools and equipment needed to make playing games a practical pastime. But these problems run much deeper than helping the differently abled enjoy games. The basics of the hobby itself make sure we'll never break through to the masses in a way that television and the written word have enjoyed. You learn to read in school, but no one is going to add Dragon Punches to the curriculum. Year after year, I see the same kinds of games lauded. I see a narrow scope of genres recognized and valued by the majority of gaming culture. We behave as if we're the only audience that matters. New players need to catch up; they need to adapt. Instead of going to new audiences, we expect them to come to us. We expect them to deal with our baggage.
And here is the crux of the matter. It's another "Gamers should not be the target audience of hardcore games." See, here's my issue with this kind of thinking: Games DO exist where anyone can play. A lot of these titles are on Nintendo systems, and they ARE making their way to Playstation and Xbox. But the main argument from this type of mentality is that core games aren't as accessible to the non-gamer, therefore, we should dumb the games down so they can come in and play like us too. This is, well, completely idiotic. I wouldn't expect someone who's favorite actor is Adam Sandler to be able to fully grasp a movie like Casablanca. I wouldn't expect someone who's favorite musical artist is whoever is on the top of the pop charts to be able to fully appreciate John Petrucci's guitar playing, Geddy Lee's bass playing, or Danny Carey's drum playing. In this same sense, I wouldn't expect someone who's favorite game of all time is fruit ninja to fully appreciate Half Life and Half Life 2. You're talking about dumbing down the apex, the core, the best of the best to make it easier for people, who wouldn't otherwise be interested, to ingest it. In doing so, while you are making it easier to serve on a silver platter to anyone who otherwise couldn't play them, you are removing key features that make each individual game stand out from another. You're basically making a movie where you have to perform an action every once in a while. That's not a game. Games are challenging. Games make you want to work on your skills and improve. Games make you want to beat them. It's dumbing down an entire artform to appeal to people it wouldn't normally appeal to. Picasso would never do that. Shakespeare would never do that. You would never see Quentin Tarantino dumbing down Kill Bill so that people could understand what's going on better.
https://archive.today/uPzzO polygon has gone full retard
Why does it imply that present gamers have to "give something up" in order for games to be more accessible. Literally the only time I've seen "streamlining" and "accessibility" get bashed is when it comes to established franchises and sequels, which makes total sense. Or when it breaks promises made previously by developers. [editline]11th February 2015[/editline]
You're talking about dumbing down the apex, the core, the best of the best to make it easier for people, who wouldn't otherwise be interested, to ingest it.
Which is funny, because it won't work. If the "apex, the core" will get, uhm, - I don't even know how to go about it, "made accessible for everyone and literally their dog"? - it will stop being the core. Because no one will play it, there won't be any appeal for hardcore/dedicated gamers. There's this word, "niche", that people seem to not understand...
So wait, do people like Jim Sterling on here?
I havnt seen or really heard anything from him at all.I honestly have no clue who he is ,if he likes to generalize communities and act like an asshole odds are I wont like him.
So wait, do people like Jim Sterling on here?
He put his own agenda over his integrity as a consumer advocate. Couldn't care less about him, frankly.
"we need more movies for blind people and music for deaf people"
Wouldn't mind that really. BBC is pretty decent at it, even Doctor Who has a separate audio track where things like a opening door get narrated. (Might have slight bias as my mom is completely deaf without modern technology,)
I think it was more an analogy about dumbing down hardcore games to appeal to the casual audience.
I'm currently working on a dissertation regarding games accessibility, especially for people with cognitive impairments. My tutor is a leading researcher on the subject, he co-founded the IGDA SIG for accessibility in games back in 2003(when the IGDA wasn't shit), and has also helped develop the "game accessibility guidelines" which is growing to become standard for how games should be developed to help people with various impairments. I know he would denounce that Polygon article since it simplifies people with impairments so much. It's plain bullshit that any game but the "low-action adventure game" would be suitable for people with impairments. He has helped develop games that are relatively hectic but could still be played by blind and non-blind people alike thanks to excellent sound design etc. It's just a matter of knowing what your audience is. Here are the guidelines, if anyone's interested in further reading. http://gameaccessibilityguidelines.com/
"Stop liking things I don't like" is pretty much the angle Polygon has been pushing the whole time
https://archive.today/uPzzO polygon has gone full retard edit: why the fuck is it double posting again, did i break something
Giving this a second look but actually on my computer: No alt attribute content on this image element. Screen readers for the visually impaired would never be able to know what the image is of. Blind people and non-english people have issues with this page. "Do what I say not what I do", slacktivism at its highest. Sure, it's a bit pedantic to ask that alt attributes be used on a site about interactive media that blind people can't enjoy and the image itself doesn't add much to the article but why preach it when you can't abide by it. For context, "alt" attributes are used in html to provide a text alternative to an image.
The alt attribute on images is a very important accessibility attribute. Authoring useful alt attribute content requires the author to carefully consider the context in which the image appears and the function that image may have in that context. The guidance included here addresses the most common ways authors use images. Additional guidance and techniques are available in Resources on Alternative Text for Images. 1.1 Examples of scenarios where users benefit from text alternatives for images They have a very slow connection and are browsing with images disabled. They have a vision impairment and use text to speech software. They have a cognitive impairment and use text to speech software. They are using a text-only browser. They are listening to the page being read out by a voice Web browser. They have images disabled to save on download costs. They have problems loading images or the source of an image is wrong.
From the W3C specification. I looked at his article and he may not actually be the one at fault, absolutely every article so far has had an empty alt tag for the header image. Either there's no way to set it or nobody set any of them since the site launched. So in short, polygon itself is not accessible lmao but whatever it provides the soapbox what more does it need. Also polygon has empty alt attributes instead of having none, so that there are no errors about accessibility in the w3 validator checker, nice.
