I'm sorry to burst your bubble OP, but America isn't a shitty country like everyone on the internet says it is. Sure, some parts are shitty (Reno, LA, all of Ohio), but other parts are amazing (Seattle, San Fransisco, NYC, New Orleans)
And about the "screwing us out of our wealth" thing, that already happened. You've already been screwed. There's no point in leaving now.
I'm planning on doing the same in Sweden, but I would have to quit school and such.
Any advice for a future fellow Scandinavian?
I have to disagree with OP that we're at our worst point right now. The Great Depression was caused by much more ignorance and irresponsibility than anything that's happened in recent times. Most people knew the dangers of buying too many stocks, including President Hoover himself, but they also believed that the problem would solve itself. At the height of the Great Depression, U.S. unemployment hovered at about 25%, whereas the highest unemployment has ever been in the last five years is about 10%. Here's a graph for comparison:
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e3/US_Unemployment_1890-2011.gif[/t]
Even during the Depression, the two main political parties were as separated as they are now. In fact, they've always been separated like oil to water. The 1870's-1890's had some of the worst corruption and dismay of any period in the United States' history; for example, New York City mayor William Tweed was able to defraud the city of over ten million dollars in the course of only two years. At the same time, there was a whole lot of bribery, the economy was very inefficient, and overall extreme corruption. Furthermore, there were the so-called "political machines", where a party organization run by a single boss or small group, would support followers and businesses, who would then receive benefits for their efforts. These political machines would then win votes for the party they supported, which is a contributing factor to how the Republican party won every national election from 1856 to 1884.
My point is, though we aren't at a great time in history, we're not at our worst, most corrupt time in history.
Is moving to a different country as difficult as it seems? I'm seriously considering moving out of the USA after I graduate college since I don't like the direction our government is taking.

If you have a job that will vouch for you, not really. I'm not leaving because of all the shit going on lately (although it makes me feel better about my choice in a way), I'm leaving because I found a more competitive job with better opportunities that just happened to be in a foreign country.
If your place of employment vouches for you, it isn't that bad, at least in my experience with Germany so far.
Good luck getting a passport during a government shutdown though
I'm not really up to date with USA politics, why are people leaving?
What did congress do?

Perhaps it just isn't as obvious like it was in the gilded age, with all those political bosses.
Corporate leaders make up a good chunk of the governments highest positions.
If you come to Sweden for free education make sure you become a legal citizen. In fact Idk what the requirements are right now.

So how long till the shutdown?

Moving isn't hard. It's avoiding getting caught by immigration services that is the challenge :v:

Isn't a shutdown just only keeping non-essential government workers off shifts? It's not like it's going to be total anarchy.
The trashcans won't get emptied at the park, worst case scenario. Especially if it's only going to last a day or two, I'm not sure why people are freaking out so much about it.
It's not even the shutdown that is horribly terrifying, it's a default, which is set to occur in mid-October

see THAT makes much more sense.
see THAT makes much more sense.
I mean if they can't even stop bitching long enough to pass a budget and avoid hundreds of thousands of people losing paychecks, what makes anyone think they are competent enough to keep the US from defaulting and fucking up the world economy?

Essential government employees will be working without pay and with a very strong chance of receiving no back pay.

But everyone knows that's bad shit for us all, they will raise the debt ceiling yet again.
But everyone knows that's bad shit for us all, they will raise the debt ceiling yet again.
I'm growing increasingly unsure about that. Representative Jason Chaffetz was just on CNN speaking as if Obama is the first and only President arguing to raise the debt ceiling. Either they are legitimately that ignorant, or they are employing a default as just another tool to increase the partisan bullshit in a scramble for influence and power.
It's not just them touting this nonsense, either. Their antics are making people more and more confused about what the debt ceiling is, so you have people growing militant about this topic that they don't even really understand. I've had several discussions with people who think that raising the debt ceiling is somehow worse than defaulting.
[editline]30th September 2013[/editline]
Also, Chaffetz is a blubbering fool, fyi
Have you ever been to America?
Yes I have, I stayed there last year, in fact. Even though I was in a pretty poor area with a high unemployement rate, it didn't seem as half as bad as most of you guys are making it out to be.
Have you ever been anywhere else?
Well, worst comes to worst. I have a good friend "across the pond", lives not too far from London too.
I have dual European-American citizenship so v:v:v
