since I wouldn't be able to post this anywhere else without making a huge flame war, can somebody tell me why Metallica is so famous? I mean, it's really not that great thrash. I'm listening through ride the lightning and it's so.. simple, and hardly that amazing and brilliant. most of the riffs are basically just the same thing for most of the song, and that repetitive SAME RIFF OVER AND OVER doesn't cut it for me. I'll happily admit I prefer Megadeth's first four albums but that shouldn't matter, I don't give a shit about this Metallica vs Megadeth war, not even the band members do anymore
or is that why they're famous? because they're simple? I don't get music tastes of the general population

Venom invented thrash
But Metallica popularised it, probably because they're way more accessible than the rest of thrash. Their lyrics aren't so controversial, they're not so heavy or brutal, and they're catchy.

Am I the only one who does not like Leviathan so much? Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye are awesome because of the way they implement complicated guitar work with really simple but catchy vocal melodies and chord progressions
Plus the song structures are amazing

Leviathan is good but it's pretty overrated.
And yeah that sounds about right for Metallica. They also brought uh... Talent, to the genre :v: Venom's musicianship was terrible really. It sounded good but it was not exactly complex lol

i just listened through ride the lightning and master of puppets and honestly, i was disappointed at how mediocre i found it. considering they're both "pinnacles of thrash", it's really quite disheartening

It seems to me you're coming at Metallica with really high expectations. It's just really well written. It takes the punk genius of the misfits and the smooth melodies of saxon in, well, the creation of thrash. Just TRY to enjoy it instead of approaching it with the mindset "this won't be as good as I was told it'll be." Even if you still don't like it, it should be very clear why other people do.
His opinion became invalid to me when he told me Exhorder was sloppy.

It's the punk with melodies that i exactly don't like about it. it's basic thrash, sure, creator or not, it's just not my sort of music. everybody else seems to think that it's amazing because it's simple, but really, i don't see it. i can't get into music that's the same shit over and over, and that's basically metallica. though, at least it's not as simple as slayer's stuff

it's not so much simple, but repetitive
Slayer is actually a lot more complex than Metallica if you look at them from a musical standpoint and look at their use of dissonant chord progressions but I doubt you actually approach technically from a standpoint other than "difficult to play riffs."
