Motherfucker Cynic ARE AMAZING.
Their jazz fusion, 6 string fretless bass and vocoder vocals really make them stand out. They are incredibly unique. And incredibly good. They've got a new album coming out this year, cannot wait. Focus are Traced In Air are both masterpieces

That song is just a terrible example of his sound :v: (It's actually a one man project, he killed a member of Mayhem with whom he was playing bass with at the time)
Man I do love the story behind Norwegian Black Metal. Definitely the most interesting music scene

If you ask me prog shouldn't really be a specific genre. It should just be a term for bands that push boundaries, incorporate new elements and new styles into music to create a sound never done before, constantly exploring new things, etc.
I mean I know lots of band do that and are labelled prog but a dream theater clone band, for instance, should not be considered progressive. They're not progressing anything.

I agree almost completely, I think a band that plays the same style as say Opeth should still be considered progressive, or else I think it will have negative effect on the scene.
I mean, if only the really new stuff is considered trve progressive, maybe bands will be like, oh I can't be entirely original so I shouldn't make music at all, or something

Progressive Metal bands that sound like copies should be named ''Progressively Challenged Metal''.
Truth be told, in the terms that Mikey is using to describe progressive music, there have been no truly progressive bands since the 70s (apart from perhaps Animals as Leaders, though that could be described as fusion). In terms of true advancement, nothing has really overcome the likes of In the Court of the Crimson King for example, purely in terms of how out there and extreme it was for the time.
That being said I view progressive simply as an embracing of all things rejected by the mainstream. For example, long songs, odd chord progressions, an emphasis on either strong atmosphere or technical ability. I think that's a much fairer ideology to have, considering how truly RARE it is for a band to completely revolutionise music.

wow I totally agree I fuckin' hate modern prog metal as much as I do scene music. god damn terrible vocals and boring as shit riffs. 7 strings =/= technicality. good drummer =/= technicality
